covers are very costly, Adi. Are you still abroad? then you may get it cheaper. When I researched last, covers with LED lights were somewhere around 3000-4000 Rs.

LOL. I tried attaching the old book light to my Nook, but it was uncomfortable.
Do you remember the booklights sold on streets - with an angulated paperclip like thing to be attached to the pages, with a swan neck shaped body and a tiny light on top?

Thats smthng similar to what am using now, a paper clip on one end and an led light on the other, connected together with a snake like body, powered by button cells. Bought it 2 years ago and now running out of battery, need to replace it.

This light didn't fit well on my Nook either. Am using it for reading paperbacks, pretty convenient.

We can download books on our desktop from Amazon and transfer it to Kindle right? Sorry, I'm a noob at this :D Or can we download the Kindle versions only on the Kindle?

If file transfer is not much of a hassle, I'll be fine without 3G. Not having a night reading light is a bother though, I do most of my reading at night.

Getting distracted is true :D I will go for an e-reader I guess, but if there isn't much difference in the price, only then would I consider a tablet. Which e-reader are you using? Does it have a night reading light? Are Kindles with that feature available in India?

Hi Smitha, is this the Nook Simple Touch you have?

http://www.ebay.in/itm/New-Barnes-Nob...

How is the access to books? And what prices do you get the books for?

message 409: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47123 comments Mod
Yes, the very one. I was gifted (or rather borrowed) lots of ebooks from my cousin in the US. I also downloaded quite a few from Nook site (free public domain ones). I have not bought an ebook yet. THough I have a gift card for Barnes and Nobles stores (gifted by my husband) which am planning to use soon.
I like my Nook. Its the best E Reader I've ever had (touch wood), very pleasing to the eyes and user friendly. It streams and reads PDF and EPUB, so also RTF. But HTML and word document (docx) are not supported. I have installed Calibre Epub reader and converter in my laptop and desktop to convert non compatible formats to compatible ones.

I got Nook Simple touch for Rs. 6000 - husband bought it from the US last year. So no taxes and other hassles.

message 411: by Rahul Nath (new)

Rahul Nath (cultofpersonality) | 869 comments Thanks Smitha. And guys, do you play audiobooks too? How's the experience?

message 412: by Jess (new)

Jess | 635 comments I download the epubs from various sources and then use the Calibre software to convert the books to mobi and transfer to Kindle thru the USB.

Jess | 635 comments Mine is a Kindle Touch wifi, and I use it whenever I've ordered a book thru Amazon. I order it thru the website and it gets delivered to the kindle whenever I'm connected to the wifi at home.

The Kindle does have a web browser called Experimental, but its extremely slow to respond.

message 415: by Rahul Nath (new)

Rahul Nath (cultofpersonality) | 869 comments As long as ordering and getting a book is fasr enough, no complaints :)

message 416: by Hemantha (new)

Hemantha | 7 comments Took the liberty of a quick look at your shelves and thought I'd point out that the graphic novels wouldn't be great with pure e-readers (even for manga, the size and clunky zooming make for an irritating read with Kindle) If they are a priority, also consider Nexus 7 or similar tablet. Also Amazon wouldn't let me buy a lot of them if I give Kindle as target device.

And specific to Kindle, probably hold off on this year's Paperwhite since there are apparently issues with light uniformity, contrast etc. Also this year's black 70$ kindle basic supposedly has better screen than the same price silver one introduced last year. Both details off mobileread forums. There's a lot of info there on the ebook models.

message 417: by Rahul Nath (new)

Rahul Nath (cultofpersonality) | 869 comments I've slowed down on mangas and graphic novels though :) I mostly read them on my laptop, and in a few cases bought them (Watchmen). I'm only looking for something that lets me read novels with ease for a long time.

Thanks for the info on the 70$ black kindle. That is the one I will end up buying most probably. Should buy it by Christmas, let's see.

message 418: by Rob (new)

Rob (rob_) | 3 comments Hey guys I am planning to buy a kindle but wanted to ask one question whether one can add separate downloaded books(not original kindle books) on Kindle e-reader and also will i need a credit card for kindle even for registering it. I am postponing my purchase because of these 2 questions which i hope you can provide answer to.

message 419: by Jess (new)

Jess | 635 comments No you don't need a credit card to register the Kindle.

Also you can certainly add separate books, not necessarily purchased on amazon. Just ensure they are in the mobi format. I use Calibre to transfer the books, alternatively you can email them to a amazon provided email. That will also ensure the book is synced across the multiple kindles and/or kindle apps that you use.

message 420: by Rob (new)

Rob (rob_) | 3 comments @chained_rose thank you for ur reply.
Another question to forum members if they can help me out whether nook is better than kindle. Actually nook is available on indian plaza website http://www.indiaplaza.com/nook-simple...
my apprehension is that B&N officially does not selll in India so there might be issues later on like warranty. that is why I am looking to kindle which is available through croma (a amazon reseller) as mentioned on their website. Or is indian plaza is as good as official sales channel in terms of warranty etc.
and in kindle is there any difference in black or silver model. please spare some seconds for this as i will be then happily own a reader by the end of week

message 424: by Rahul Nath (new)

Rahul Nath (cultofpersonality) | 869 comments Harsha, how are the book prices from B&N store? Or do you download from other sites?

message 425: by Harsha (new)

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments I haven't bought from B&N till now. I already have a pretty good collection of ebooks which I got from many sources- other sites, from friends, cousins etc.

message 426: by Rahul Nath (new)

Rahul Nath (cultofpersonality) | 869 comments I almost bought the basic Kindle from Croma, but decided to wait. I think Amazon prices are cheaper, but readers have seemed to prefer using the Nook. Do you get good service after buying in India?

Pallavi (bookfetisher) Hi all.... I read all the comments till now....
I want a ebook reader which doesnt have any other functionalities except "Reading"...
As i checked the comments 2 are best among them
Kindle and Nook....
So please help me to choose b/w them.
1)And also if i have some pdf's can i add them to above readers using usb?
2)Which one is simple for downloading/reading/copying pdf's in above readers?
3)Which is low cost, high performance, easily available in India ?
Please share your opinions....

message 431: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) @Indian: thanks....
i checked croma store it has a basic kindle... i want a touch one...:(
should search more options for this

message 432: by Rahul Nath (new)

Rahul Nath (cultofpersonality) | 869 comments They only sell Kindle in India. You can get Nook from Ebay as well but I don't think you'll get warranty.

message 433: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (bookfetisher) @Rahul:Oh is it ??
And what about Kindle Paperwhite touch?

message 434: by Rahul Nath (new)

Rahul Nath (cultofpersonality) | 869 comments Paperwhite is the latest right? It's not in India yet. You can get the Kindle Fire tablets from online stores. Kindle touch and Nook simple touch ones are also available online. But only the basic Kindle model is available in Croma store for now. If you don't want any features other than reading, it should do fine. Fulfills all other requirements.

message 435: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments Guys, Kindle Fire is a tablet, not an e-reader - huge difference!!!

And AFAIK, U shud be looking at epub support more than pdf support - and that's where i believe kindle is at a disadvantage - u need to use a separate software to convert epub format books to kindle's format.

Epub because its more flexible compared to pdf, it allows flexible page restructuring based on ur font size etc. Most ebooks are available in epub format that pdf.

Disadvantages of Nook - not available in its cheapest price in India - but if u can get one from US, u shud be able to get it for around 6.5K INR. Another disadvantage is that most new authors put up their ebooks for sale on amazon and only a few, slowly come to Nook store. So if u are big on reading latest novels mostly - then forget Nook, else i recommend u to get one from US through frnds visiting home. I personally don't care for warranty - if u do, again, Nook is not for u!

Nook Simple Touch is great. I have had it for past 2 years - no problem so far, except for an episode of hanging which corrected itself when I discharged and recharged the battery. My husband got it for me from US for around 6500, so I dont know the cost in India. I just love my Nook (touchwood)

You are in the same condition that I was in the beginning of this january. You can start with Kindle wifi. I bought it last month. It is an amazing and simple gadget with a superb e-ink screen on which reading is a pleasure.

Need not to worry about formats at all, you may hear that kindle doesn't support popular format but any format including pdf can be converted to any kindle format. Just install calibre ebook manager (freeware software) in your computer and you are on the go :)

All the best.

Don't know if this is a naive question but why do you need a Kindle if you have an iPad, I think its battery life takes care of the disadvantages of other tabs.

i bought My nook for same reason XD but i quite liked Ipad features n smoothness that's why now selling it :(

one thing i hate about e book reader is that if book is not from maker's site it will lose bookmark n highlight data after sometime . ( but u can solve this problem opening book directly from library )

message 449: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments iPad's screen isn't idle for reading over a long period of time - any LCD/LED/TFT kind of screens aren't ideal for reading.

Kindle (not Fire) e-reader, Nook (not Nook color) e-reader, Kobo etc come with e-ink screens which provide ideal reading screen - the screen just looks like a paper. U can get more info on wiki page. And the subsequently the battery runs for 2 weeks to a month's time.

message 450: by Sanam (new)

Sanam Suhag ^ yea :) but some ppl can handle ipad's screen on low brightness XD
i just read 1 hour daily so not much of a big problem for me @.@ .
i ve read 8 hours without break n had no problem , maybe casue i work at PC all day long @.@

n i love highlight , page turning like features on IPAD more (ibook app ) @.@
