sony PRS which I had conked off within a year or so. It costed around Rs. 15000, the touch screen was dim and easy to catch glare. I was not at all comfortable with it. As far as I remember, I used to convert my html files to word or pdf to read.

Hi Smitha, thanks. But does kindle or nook support it.My purpose is to fit all my medical books, each of each in the CHM format is around 200- 350 MB. And the sony prs-t1 version introduced just less than a year costs around 8k-9k.

message 353: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments The link here doesn't show CHM in supported formats.
http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stor...

Or are you talking of another PRS-T1?

As for reading CHM, the best way is to use software to convert to other formats - Calibre can be used to convert CHM to ePub or Pdf i guess. Another option is to 'root' your e-reader with a CHM viewer. I believe it should be easier in Nook (cause it's android based) u root it and then install a CHM viewer app and you should be set. Please try searching online for 'rooting' the e-readers and you may come across an easier solution.

Pratik Hello my fellow Indian Readers ..
I am a delhiHite.
After reading all your experiences ... I wanna ask one question..

Which is the best ereader for reading my personal collection of books ?

I mean i just want to transfer ebooks from my computer and read them on the way .. simple ..

audio, wifi & browser are secondary .. as in cases they might help .. bt, not necessary..

Although ur posts have put decent light on the the subject ..
Bt, still I am seeking an advice out of your experiences.

Thanks

hi pratik..as you may have seen from the previous posts , i bought my nook a week back...i contemplated what to buy for around 6 months.finally decided with Nook.

the following went for Nook.

*i liked the look of it.
*expandable memory
*many who had used nook and kindle suggested nook.(including the e reader library/museum owner Col.Smitha here in IR :D)
*its exclusively for reading.no browser , no audio books(unless you root it)

i would say go for Nook...

if all yes then I am eyeing a NOOK Simple Touch™ with GlowLight™ .

I have SOny PRS 660 (or 600-not sure), Infibeam Pi1, Infibeam Pi2 and Nook Simple touch. I love Nook the best. Its much easier than others. And less costly, too.

Medical books are difficult to read in E Reader, even if converted to PDF, those are quite difficult to scroll through.

message 361: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) Hey everyone. I have been scrolling through this discussion and seeing various sites. I am hoping to buy a Kindle but can't decide which one to buy as there are so many options. I want to go with Kindle Fire but I'm thinking it may have glare. Should I go with Simple Kindle, Kindle Touch or Kindle Fire? Please guide.

message 362: by Vinoth (new)

Vinoth | 4684 comments pragya ,if you want a device more for browsing/watching/listening and less for reading go for Kindle fire

if ur requirement is exactly opposite do read the following..

if u r ok with a 5 way key for turning pages , then go for a simple kindle ..
if u want a touch facility for turning pages go for a kindle touch.

If you have not used a e reader before , then i would like to tell you that the turning of pages is a bit tiresome one when compared to a actual book(so far i have read 2 books in ma nook and this is ma feeling. thank god i have touch.. maybe it will change after reading a few more books).only because a page in a book maybe 2 or 3 pages in a e reader depending on your choice of fonts and font size..so i would recommend you to go with a touch one. because it gives u a option to use the screen to turn pages or use the button to do that..u can switch between two to do so..

message 363: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) Thank you Vinoth. Does anyone here have any experience with Nook? If yes, which one and please share your experience.

message 364: by Venkat (new)

Venkat | 2 comments I wanted to buy a kindle but saw samsung tab on discount for almost the same price. since i then i havent switched my lap on. its neat and sending this message from tab. if you want just for reading then kindle is good enough, if you want more than just reading get a ipad/tab.

Nook simple touch is great and cost effective. If I am not wrong we all have written ad nauseum about it in the same thread somewhere above

absolutely, i got a Kindle myself. i bought it when i last went abroad so it didnt cost as it costs in Amazon.

then again you got ipod touch. it is easier to get kindles than pdfs though

message 368: by K.C. (new)

K.C. E books are getting popular. But for some books are in paper and ink only. Publishing in bith is better.

message 369: by Jess (new)

Jess | 635 comments I recently got a Kindle Touch and I have to admit I've made the transition from paper books to ebooks very easily.
My very first ebook was Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code on my computer, and though the book kept me hooked, I hated the experience.
Later I tried reading some small pdf articles on my samsung galaxy but the glare sure made it tough.
I bought the Kindle unsure of my usage, and only coz I'd found some great ebooks online that I wished to read...

Its been a month now, and I'm yet to pick up a regular book :-)

message 370: by Prasan (new)

Prasan | 6 comments I am using a Kindle Keyboard 3G. Boy i must say i am hooked infact i feel i read a lot faster on a Kindel.Cheers Amazon ;-)

message 371: by Srinivas (new)

Srinivas | 1 comments Me too... brought a kindle keyboard with 3G and WiFi last september, and have been reading a lot of books, and quite fast too ever since. I haven't transitioned completely to the e-book genre and still buy/read paperbacks too. But, the humble eye-friendly kindle has definitely got me hooked to it, and it sure beats reading ebooks on a laptop/desktop.

Anbu (anbutheone) | 4469 comments Indian wrote: "How easy/difficult it is to get kindle books in India? Is the buying/browsing experience same as in the US?"

Mostly Indian users of e-books mostly side load the books.. Buying e-books in amazon is much costlier compared to Indian bookstores/sites..

My Nook simple touch battery is discharging very quickly for the past couple of days. It is not even a year old.Earlier it used to last for 2-3 weeks on sleep mode itself, but yesterday I recharged it and overnight it is showing 20%. Am feeling so depressed, as I love this E Reader the best. Anyone else facing a similar problem.

message 374: by Dheeraj (new)

Dheeraj Mohan | 130 comments Check out ZxReader application for Cell phones. http://zxstyles.allnokia.ru/zxreader.php.

Reads txt and fb2 files. (Remember Project Gutenberg. www.gutenberg.org .An almost unlimited collection of classics.) The app Wraps the text for your screen size and you can adjust the font size too. So no zooming required. If you are immediately absorbed by the text and easily forget how small your screen really is, then this is a good solution and discreet as well. If you own a bigger display android tablet, even better.

message 375: by Dheeraj (new)

Dheeraj Mohan | 130 comments @ Smitha. reply to message 390:

Try to keep wifi turned off for the usage cycle and check the battery life for one full charge.

Try to discharge it all the way. This can be done by forcing it to turn on even after it has gone to sleep mode / turned itself off after a low battery warning. Ensure it has fully depleted. Then put it on charge and resume normal usage. This could solve your fast discharge problems.

Another tip to better life is to sparcely use the device while it is being charged. Ideal usage should be one full charge , and then full discharge.

The battery is covered under its one year warranty, so you could always claim a replacement.

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47123 comments Mod
thanks, Dheeraj. Actually, I never turn on the wifi and thankfully now the problem is solved (hopefully). I recharged the battery for more than 4 hours, till full charge and now it is not discharging quickly. I sometimes used to read the device while being charged. I will stop that now.
Battery coverage is there, but then my husband bought it from the US and there is no way I can get it repaired (I feel I would have to pay dearly just to transport the thing)

Anbu (anbutheone) | 4469 comments Online mega store, Flipkart has announced that its digital store, Flyte, will now also sell eBooks for Android phones and tablets with a special dedicated application. Currently, Flyte has a selection of more than 1 lakh books, with prices starting at Rs 30, while around 4000 books are available for free.

Full Story here:

With flipkart entering e-book market with cheaper prices, I think we can also expect very cheap e-books from other sites as well.. :)

message 383: by Rahul Nath (new)

Rahul Nath (cultofpersonality) | 869 comments Hey guys, which are the newest models and features of Nook and Kindle? Which is better, simpler, has access to more books etc.?

I want something within a budget of 12,000 bucks.

message 384: by Jess (new)

Jess | 635 comments @Rahul how will you be getting the ereader? Thru a person or purchase online?

I got my kindle touch thru a friend from the US, thus saving on the Rs.2000 custom duty.
Kindle Paperwhite is the latest from Amazon. however for me, it defeats the purpose of an ereader by being backlit.

As far as number of books is concerned, you can always use Calibre to change the book formats. I get my books in epubs, but easily convert to mobi for the kindle.

message 385: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments Kindle is sold in India currently at around 7000 INR - no more customs duty hassles.

If u r looking at only an e-reader functionality, i suggest you to stay away from kindle fire and the nook color kinds. The best of nook is Nook simple touch and there are a few more options available for Kindle - one with full keypad, one with touch screen etc. Advantage in favor of Kindle is that its sold in stores in India now and more books are available in kindle store than the nook store. But i liked the nook simple touch better - it was much more book like to hold and read or maybe just a psychological thing i have for it :)

message 386: by Vi (new)

Vi | 163 comments Chained_rose: just to clarify Paperwhite is not backlit. It had LEDs embedded at the top and bottom to give light. It's supposed to better than using a cover with light which I used to when I was reading in bed.

message 387: by Jess (new)

Jess | 635 comments @Vi of what I've read in the amazon forums, the light remains on all the time. You can only dim it but they don't switch off; consequently daytime reading is affected.

message 388: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments Hmm... looks like the paperwhite has a useful feature after all. I had to buy a separate led book-light to use when i read in bed. But even the cover with a light sounds good. Vi, a pic or a link to such covers please...

message 389: by Vi (new)

Vi | 163 comments Yeah unfortunately that is true. Amazon made that choice to justify the name Paperwhite i.e the screen looks white. But this LED will not affect your eyes but the backlit screens mostly does.

message 390: by Vi (new)

Vi | 163 comments Aditya - Here is a lighted cover - one used for an old kindle - Link

message 391: by Jess (new)

Jess | 635 comments Whatever happened to bedside lamps??? ;-) so much more easier to use.

I got an Amazon Touch at 5k from US, so if a basic Kindle is available at 7 k, it still takes into account the custom duty charges.

message 392: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments bedside lamps are too bright for my 6 month old baby :)
am not sure of the exact price in the stores, but for the current dollar-rupee exchange rate and the added convenience of claiming warranty in India, i'd prefer buying it in India at a premium of 1-2k. Having said that, i got my Nook from US too, costed around 6-7k INR i think.

Thanks Vi for the link. I wonder if the same fits for Nook or something similar exists for Nook as well. I just returned from a short trip to the US, wish i had seen this while i was there :(

message 393: by Rahul Nath (new)

Rahul Nath (cultofpersonality) | 869 comments Thanks Vi, Chained Rose and Aditya.......so the Kindle looks to be the preferred choice I guess. Though I have no idea of the latest models and how they differ from each other. So the paperwhite makes daytime reading difficult? Any other models of the Kindle where it is easier to read at any time-day or night?

Also, is the Nook available in stores in India? I was looking at the products in ebay but maybe it will be better to go and buy in person.

message 394: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments I believe the paperwhite has a brightness adjuster, so it would be definitely easier to use in both day as well as night times. But am not sure if paperwhite is available in Indian stores yet.

The last i checked (an year ago), Nook wasnt available in India, either online or in stores.

message 395: by Vi (last edited Dec 06, 2012 11:37PM) (new)

Vi | 163 comments What Aditya said. You can adjust the brightness. Amazon recommends the highest brightness in a bright room and a lowest in a dark room. Paperwhite is definitely not available in India nor is the Nook. I believe last year's Kindle is available in Croma for 7K with the lighted cover sold seperately. I have the Sony T1 got from US also :)

message 396: by Rahul Nath (new)

Rahul Nath (cultofpersonality) | 869 comments Last year's Kindle is the keyboard one with 3g? Does the paperwhite come with 3g or do we have to pay extra? And what about the Kindle Fire Tablets? Do they offer a good reading experience?

If the Kindle available at Croma is good enough, I may take it anyways. All I want is a good reading experience, both during day and night, access to more books and 3g as well, preferably.

message 397: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments Kindle wi-fi is the basic model available in Croma for 7k, 3g would be much costlier. U intend to buy books over 3g while on the move?
http://www.cromaretail.com/e-Book-Rea...

This is not paperwhite model, doesnt have any night reading light - so u wud need to buy a cover with light or some other accessory for in-bed reading.

I guess Vi meant paperwhite is 'not' available in India.

Kindle fire and other tablets are no where comparable to the reading experience provided by the e-ink screens of regular Kindle and Nook

message 398: by Jess (new)

Jess | 635 comments @Rahul best would be to go to the Amazon site, check out their models and also the customer forums for opinions, reviews, and feedback on the models

message 400: by Vi (new)

Vi | 163 comments Sorry, I did mean not. Typing mistake.

I would agree that the tablets are not as good as the e-readers (for me atleast). It all depends if extended reading using LCD screens affect your eyes. Another factor to consider is that when you're using tablets, you are more likely to be distracted from reading whereas using e-reader, you would not. That said, if you are planning to read more PDF (which usually means papers & text books), then your best option would be a tablet. If it's fiction, then I would suggest e-reader.

Rahul, you also need to consider: 3g might mean getting additional costs due to Amazon's Whispersync. I'm not sure if it applies here or not. You need to check on Amazon's web page. And I read somewhere that Amazon restricts 3g to Wikipedia and amazon website but I can't be sure.

I second Chained_Rose suggestion. Do go to the Amazon site especially if you are intending for Paperwhite and also mobileread.com which is an excellent forum for info on all e-readers. I followed the forum when I got my e-reader and it helped loads.
