Whoa! Drizzle’s eyes widened as the stair beneath him gave away and his leg feel through the hole it left behind. His trunk clunked to the bottom of the staircase, the loudest sound echoed from the foot. Drizzle groaned, as this wasn’t the first, or even the second, obstacle he’d come across on his way to the Hufflepuff Common Room. He’d tried to follow the gamekeeper’s directions, but it was not an easy task. He’d been lost since about five minutes after he started and ran into a fake door. It took all the strength he could possible find in his wiry frame to hoist himself up. Quickly counting the stairs to the top, Drizzle went down to grab his suitcase. Going up, he made sure to skip the trick step, feeling a smidge of triumph erase approximately .01% of his humiliation. At the top of the staircase, he stopped took a seat on his trunk, hoping a Hufflepuff would pass by. Or anyone really. He was in need of a chat and it wouldn’t hurt as he’d missed the start (and much of the middle) of the year and was a stranger to everyone.

Medea wandered the halls, wondering if Caleb and Avery had gotten back from break yet. They have to be here somewhere. Her hand went to her pocket again, and she wrapped the silk around her finger. It still felt odd to have her daffodil ring off. I'll put it back on when I go back to the dorm. She wasn't sure why she had taken the ring off in the first place.

Avery continued his silent, slightly brooding walk down the corridor. He heard footsteps and glanced up; his eyes locked with Medea's and he blinked quickly to dispel some of the red, tired-eyed gloom. "Hi," he said weakly.

A huge grin spread across Medea's face. "Avery! Hey!" She glanced around quickly; Caleb wasn't with him. So maybe there had been no improvement in that relationship over break. Oh well, maybe it's useless to keep hoping now anyway. "How was your Christmas?" she asked eagerly. Then she looked at him more closely. "You ok?"

"Hi!" Anni said brightly to a lost-looking boy she noticed walking past her. "Are you new here?"

Avery paused, his shoulders lifting and falling in a shrug. "Fine."

Medea's smile faded. She shook her head after staring at him for a moment. "You're sure? That's not very convincing. You seem... " She wasn't sure how to finish the sentence. He just seemed a little off, but that could sound insulting.

Avery half-smiled, bitterness and pain tinging it. "A little off? Yeah, I know." He let out a breath, eyes hardening slightly as he looked at the floor. "I guess I'm not okay."

Medea nodded slowly. Then she reached out - releasing her grip on the silk - and laid her hand on his shoulder. She started gently steering him down the hall. "Come on. It feels nice outside and I haven't been to the lake in a while. And then I'll listen if you want to talk."
