Nick raised an eyebrow slightly. "I am. I'm a muggleborn as well, it's never been a disadvantage for me. Natural talent isn't hereditary."

Caleb nodded and smiled slightly as they walked quickly toward the classroom.

Avery followed Medea more closely, genuinely happy.

Caleb laughed slightly. "It's fine. This way, I think."

Nick nodded. "Yes, I am." He thought for a moment. "Well, it was certainly different to not know everything the purebloods or even halfbloods did, but not too much harder at all. Honestly? For all their prior education, most of them are just as lost the first days as everyone else."

Nick frowned slightly at her changing tone, wondering what had lead to the bitterness there. "Well," he said, "before I attended Hogwarts I did not do much traveling, no. And as to being lost? It depends on the individual. I knew students of all bloods that were completely lost, and some that seemed totally confident."

"Gryffindor," Nick said simply with a shrug. "Actually, I'm the head of Gryffindor house." He tilted his head. "Why are you apologizing?"

Medea couldn't hold back a giggle at the twins' contrasting expressions.

Avery shook off the confusion and grinned slightly. "Well, whatever it was, I hope it doesn't happen again."

Caleb appeared slightly surprised at Avery's acceptance of their speaking together. "I hope so, too."

"I would think that DADA would be one of the funnest classes," Medea said thoughtfully. "And Charms seems like it should be a fun class. I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer to judge."

Nick nodded slightly. "Your apology is appreciated, but not necessary." He leaned back onto his hands slightly. "Slytherins in general aren't always the most accepting. I am glad you've found friends, they always make things easier."

Professor Hayden nodded with a slightly amused look. "I know. I've met many Slytherins who have been very nice. And Gryffindors who haven't been. It depends on the individual, not the house."

Medea made a face. "I'm so NOT excited for Flying. I cannot fly at all. It'll be so embarrassing."

Caleb shook his head ruefully. "I can't say I'm all that excited either." He shot Avery an apologetic glance. "Flying's great and all, but after the... incident last year, it hasn't been my favorite activity."

Avery had to stifle a laugh at that particular memory, something that surprised him. He found he missed talking with his brother this way.

"What was the incident?" Medea said with a smile. She met Avery's eyes.

Avery looked back at her with a grin.

Caleb groaned slightly. "Well," he paused. "Let's just say my friend's broomstick had a tendency to wig out at high altitudes and leave it at that."

Avery laughed. "You can't just leave it hanging there," he said mock-accusingly.

Caleb pinched the bridge of his nose briefly and sighed in surrender. "I had this friend in Australia, her name was Alex. They lived close to the edge of town so we'd go fly in the allotted area in the outback a lot." He shot a grin at Avery. "And Avery went with Summer." He shook his head an continued. "Well, one day we were going to go but I'd forgotten my broom, so we went digging around for a spare. The one we found looked fine. And it acted fine until we went up high to do a dive. Then... It started going really fast and doing these weird loops. I fell off and she had to catch me." His face was red as he rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.

Professor Hayden nodded. "That is also true." He tilted his head slightly. "And yourself?"

Caleb checked the time a little anxiously, wanting to hurry up. He wanted to talk to Lyra before class. He flushed slightly but brushed it off with a general grin.

Hayden nodded absently as he wrote down several things on the whiteboard (which he much preferred to chalkboards) and set up a few models.

A trace of a frown crossed Medea's face. Alex? Summer? Who were THEY? But she laughed when Caleb finished his story. "Well, it sounds like quite an adventure!"
