Medea scowled. She tapped her toe on the floor, trying to listen to the rhythm rather than Iris and Avery's conversation. It was helping to tune them out. Well, it's not like this has never happened. I actually get a friend who enjoys hanging out with me, and then somebody new comes along. And suddenly I'm just not their friend anymore. Good. He'll like being her partner more. I'm boring and mopey and "dark", after all. She slammed open her book forcefully, flipping it to a page on palm reading. She stared at it, but wasn't reading. This sure is shaping up to be a great class period.

"Good," Avery said, smiling. He felt bad for not including Medea, but Iris seemed like she felt a little out of place.

Caleb barely heard Lyra whisper something and turned, curious.

Medea looked up. "Yes?" she whispered cautiously. What would Lyra possibly want to say to her? Well, maybe she would have an opportunity to apologize to the Slytherin girl now.

Iris sat in her seat, blushing at the thought of what had happened. As usual, she had blown the whole situation out of proportion. And now Medea looked kind of... mad. Great now she had to straighten things out with Caleb, Lyra, and Medea. Gee, for someone who claimed to try not to get into the drama, she sure was slipping in quickly.

Goshdarnit! When am I supposed to apologize to Medea now?! I guess I could catch her in the common room later? Iris cursed her bad luck.

Medea looked at Lyra in confusion, but stood up quietly and came over. She sat down, looking at Lyra with wide eyes. Her anger was fading, replaced by bemusement. "Uh, thanks. So what is it?" she asked softly.

"I messed up everything," Iris said to Avery. "I suppose you were planning to partner up with Medea?"

Medea turned her head away sharply, pretending not to see Avery. She ignored Iris and focused on Lyra.

Avery bit the inside of his cheek to hold in an angry response. He released a breath. "Maybe, but you're fine," he said. "It was my choice."

Caleb gave Medea an encouraging smile.

"Uh huh..." Iris commented sadly. "I guess I'll just pay attention for the rest of class." Iris didn't wanted to straighten out everything in her head before talking to anyone. Luckily, all of these teachers were oblivious to their students.

Medea smiled back at Caleb, still confused. At least Avery looked apologetic, and Iris realized what had happened. Medea took a deep breath, forcing herself to cool down. It wasn't a big deal at all; she just had a short fuse lately. What with tomorrow coming up...

"Unless, you wanted to talk or something," Iris said quickly, not wanted to offend Avery after she had already scared off Medea.

"Oh," Medea said. She gave an awkward laugh. "Actually, I was planning to apologize about that too. I'm really sorry - I realized that I was wrong, and I didn't understand... Well, I'm sorry."

Caleb glanced between the two, confused, but didn't ask questions. It probably wasn't his business.

Avery shrugged. "Nah, we should probably pay attention," he said with a small grin.

"Okay," Iris tried to sound nonchalant, but was of course, relieved. Just to add one last thing... "Sorry I caused a whole thing between you and Medea. I'll try to fix it." And with that, she started doodling in her notebook and playing out a million possible situations in her head.

Medea smiled automatically at Caleb. "It's ok. We just ran into each other yesterday, and were geting along fine until... a tender subject came up, and we disagreed. I was wrong anyway," she explained to him in a whisper.

Iris dared one glance back at Lyra and Medea to see they were both smiling. Well, maybe it would be easier to talk to them now... unless they were laughing at her. NO! Iris wouldn't allow herself to believe others were doing her harm unless it was true, because that causes problems, too. Arguing with myself? I'm officially going crazy.

Medea glanced back at Avery. He seemed to be having fun talking to Iris, at least. She forced her smile to stay in place; she had just made two new friends, and it didn't matter if Avery was ignoring her. No matter.
