Amy (amyhageman) | 57 comments I have a hardcover version of Roots of Strategy, published by Barnes and Noble as a bargain book.

I added the book and would like to merge it with the paperback version already in Goodreads. The problem is, the author is listed incorrectly on the paperback version.

And although I've applied for librarian sstatus and have been able to edit some books (I added the cover for the hardcover version) I am unable to edit the paperback version.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to fix this?

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Amy,

Well, they do look to be the same book. It's one of those books with multiple authors and editors and that's what the problem is.

Your first book the author at Goodreads is listed as: Thomas R. Phillips, who's one of the editors.

The second book has a different (I'm not sure who) author listed.

In order to combine book edtions, the first "author" has to be the same, exactly the same.

In books where combining should be done, the author/spelling needs to be changed.

This book should probably be researched (some librarians are better at this than I! Or more willing?) to see which author(s) are the "correct" ones for this book. Then, both these editions could be "given" the correct author(s) and then combined.

You are most likely having problems because the authors differ.

Unless you mean you really can't edit the paperback version at all. Is that what you mean? (I haven't yet tried.)

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments Actually, fixing the authors should be easy in this case. If Amy actually owns the book, she should be able to determine the proper author order. Make all of the authors identical on all the editions, then combine them.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Well, that's what I'd think and I'd have to look more carefully but it looked as though the first edition listed had the editor listed as author and for the second edition listed Amazon lists a bunch of editors, the editor above being listed second, not first. Re the actual 5 authors, guess you could list the first three in the same order??? and combine? Maybe the editions are slightly different?

Amy (amyhageman) | 57 comments I was unable to edit the paperback version. I tried twice. I got a message that I needed to apply to be a librarian to edit the book.

Amy (amyhageman) | 57 comments I tried again to edit the paperback version, and still cannot change it. I can make changes to the hardcover version. Am I only allowed to edit books that I enter into the system? I could change the hardcover to match the paperback and then try to combine, but I believe that the paperback version is incorrect (I have checked entries at Amazon and Barnes and Noble; the main editor is the editor I listed, the 'author' listed on the paperback version is an editor as well but is about the fifth editor.

Can someone else try to edit the paperback version?

This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For | 949 comments I changed the author to the correct editor and combined them for you. Let me know if there are other problems.
