Alberto | 8 comments We've met some interesting characters in the novel Of Mice and Men. You may have noticed that many of the characters are afflicted with shortcomings and/or handicaps. List main or favorite characters and explain how their handicap contributes to their conflict.

Marcel Northcutt | 3 comments The character I chose was Lennie. Lennie is a mentally ill man, who is unable to make choices for himself. So he counts on a man name George to make choices for him. So Lennie follows George around because, he looks up to him.

message 3: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 5 comments The character I chose was Lennie. All throughout this book, Lennie always seems to be a nuisance to everyone around him. George seems to feel as though Lennie is holding him back from living his life and doing what he wants to do. Lennie's problem is that he is mentally retarded/slow. So he does not always comprehend everything fully. So basically this is a Man vs. Society works in play, because he is by himself in the world. No one really respects him.

James | 2 comments the character i chose is lennie just like marcel said hes mentally ill and is unable to think for himself i think he holds george back from getting to his goals

Mie-mie Sarnor (miemie) | 23 comments My character I chose in Mice and Men is Lennie Small. Lennie is a man who likes to travel with George. Lennie is incapable of looking after himself; he is extremely strong and fascinated with soft things. Lennie is slow in mind; he has short attention span and acts similar to a child; because of his mental limitation. He never understands and he does’nt know this own strength. He realizes that the is strong as a bull. He has a poor memory and he has to repeat things to himself many time to remember them because he got the mind of a child. Any time he try to remember things he still forgets them. Lennie has sort blind faith in George, strusting in George to protect him and look after his welfare. .

Judith | 2 comments Candy and Candy's Dog. Candy is a old man who is missing a arm and is very handicap. He can't relly work because hes so old and cannot do much without an arm. His dog is a old blind, dumb dog. He can hardly eat or sleep. He is dying slowly and it is a struggle for him just to stand.

message 7: by Kalfassss (new)

Kalfassss | 2 comments The character I chose was not an actual person, it was the dog. Beside being old and sick, the dog had more handicaps then any person in the book. Without being able to speak, the dog had a personal connection with it's owner but was shortly cut off by the sound of a gun shot. Considering the dog was so old and barely could see or hear it didn't even having a warning of the bullet going through his head. Without being able to eat or sleep, the poor old dog had more handicaps then any human in Of Mice and Men.

Brandon (bboi) | 3 comments The character's handicap I'm going to point is Crooks. I'm not going to talk about how he has a crooked back, I'm going to point out the fact that he's black. Being black in the 1930's had no upside to it. Crooks color kept him being a lonely man throughout the book.

`. kateelynn * | 4 comments I'm gonna pick Lennie for this character analysis & I will point out a thing no one has mentioned about him here. I noticed that when Crooks was somehow verbally abusing him & saying that George could be hurt or dead - Lennie thought he was really hurt so he got mad and then asked who hurt him. That shows whoever hurts 'his George' is going to be beat up by Lennie even though he is mentally retarded. He is actually pretty strong & have the ability to cause any damage to people that hurts him or George.

message 10: by Renee (new)

Renee | 3 comments My favorite character is Lennie. I chose to talk about his handicap because I feel his mental retardation had an impact not only on him but others. Lennie was able to take and cover what could seem hopeless and miserable to others and make it appear as destiny. I guess you can say this character proved “Ignorance is bliss.” Though Lennie was in a position of Man vs. Society, he had an positive impact on everyone.

Mie-mie Sarnor (miemie) | 23 comments My second character I chose is Curley’s Wife. She has a feel for Slim, she is portrayed as such a whore whenever she appears, obviously plying up and teasing the men. She is cruel to Crook, Candy and Lennie were in Crook’s room, and later on she tempts Lennie , letting him to stroke her hair in the barm. She dressed inappropriately and seductively. She was married for couple of weeks and she admits to Lennie that she doesn’t like her husband and she regrets marrying him.

The character I chose to discuss is George. Although George seems to be the one lennie looks up to, he's no real role model. He comes off that Lennie needs him, but in reality he's the one who needs Lennie. Lennie may come off as big and useless but he takes the body guard idea to me in protecting George in the worse circumstances. Also, George even noted that he's a good worker, just not big on socializing. To sum it all up, George is weaker than we think, and possibly just a "parent type" not particularly a good one, but someone who takes authority because they can. This type of conflict is man vs. society. Without Lennie, George has to fend for himself. Lennie may be a burden, but to George he's worth carrying.

message 15: by Maurice (new)

Maurice (maurice2010) | 4 comments I chose to compare how the dog in the book was treated and compare it to todays society and how senior citizens are being treated.

The dog in the book was old brittle, and could barely move and he reaked a horrible odor so Carlson decided that since the dog was old and couldn't do anything that he was useless and did not deserve to live so he took the dog outside an shot him.

this is similar to how todays society is, Seniors citizens get no respect people simply see them as an obstacle in the way of their everyday life. In other cultures old people are considered mentors to the younger generation and many people look to them for guidance. Today they mean nothing and im sure many people dont think they deserve to even be aroun

message 16: by Katonya2010 (new)

Katonya2010 | 2 comments The character I chose is Carlson. The reason why I chose him is because he's decent. He don't care who he hurt he goings to do what he want. To me I think he is so banging. So to me Carlson is a G.

message 17: by JuJu (new)

JuJu (latinassassin) | 8 comments The caharcters in this book are all unique and kind of outline the very characters of our own.I would anyone who reads this to really think about the people you see everyday.
I know some people remind me of Slim.He has a comfortable place in his life, but he refuses to further himself even more,He has a fear of failure and does not want to try and fail.So Slim will remain unhappy and never try. This reminds me of a lot of dudes that I know.
Then there are those people that remind me of George,George has actual feeling for Lennie, but he would drop him in order o get what he needs and wants. He will use Lennie to gain power and money. He does this in order to further himself and make his own life better. This is ingenius, immoral, but none the less it is genius. It's kind of like our peers don't you think so Con High?
Lennie is a simple person who only wants to be happy.Kind of like many of the people in our school anbd lives.Lennie finds joy in the simplest of things. At all times he wants nothing, but to enjoy himself. If Lennie has to get his work done in order to get his enjoyment later on he will. Many people should think this way.If people thought that way in our school, many people would get their shyt done and then later have fun with a great career, kids and a spouse.
This book is very relative to many of our lives.Just look beyond the page.Open up the book and then read this book, and while you're doing so open up those pages and relate it to your own life. This book has actual meaning and shoyuld be read while comparing not only characters in the book, but characters in our own lives.

message 18: by Inkiera (new)

Inkiera | 3 comments The characters whom handicap I chose to analysis is Curley . Although he is portrayed as a mean person on the inside I believe he's weak. He needs to pick on people whom he believes can't defend themselves to make himself look "almighty". When in reality he is just as defenseless as the people he picks on. The type of conflict he faces is Man vs. Himself because of his insecurities.

message 19: by Addarr2010 (new)

Addarr2010 | 1 comments The character i chose was Lennie because throughout the book he was always a very sweet caring person and never meant no harm but he always seemed to mess up. Even though he has a handicap he doesn't let that stop him from trying to see the brighter sides of things that are not so bright. Take for instance when he plays with mice people might think thats disgusting but Lennie actually thinks it beautiful. The type of conflict he faces is man vs. society because of his lack of knowledge certain people find it annoying.

message 20: by Zach (new)

Zach Kara | 1 comments i choose Lennie because he is completely vulnerable. Despite his size and strength he is still mentally retarded. He depends on George to keep his working papers and keep of everything except smelling the flowers and playing with fluffy animals. At any moment George could make way with his papers and his money and leave Lenny helpless. Or he could use George to work and take portions of his money with out being the least bit suspicious to Lennie. Because is a bird brain and doesn't even think far enough to notice something like that.

message 21: by s0 c0nFuSeD (new)

s0 c0nFuSeD | 2 comments The character I choose from Of Mice and Men who has a handicap is Curly's wife. The reason I choose Curly's wife as having a handicap is for one she is the only female throughout the whole book. This is a handicap because that makes her the only woman in a man's world. Her conflict can also be that since she is the only woman she is portrayed as a whore In my opinion I do not think that she should not be portrayed as a whore just because she is around a group of men all the time, especially since I can relate to this situation since I am usually with a group of boys myself, and I'm not a whore so therefore I think that portraying her as a whore is a handicap and also can cause her conflict.

Stephan Mosby-Williams | 3 comments I believe that Candy is an old man with a few disabilities that hold him back. First its his one arm. What's the most he can do with one arm, everything he does is half-ass done, get it. Also his pride holds him back. His pride cost his dog its life.

message 23: by Shawanda (new)

Shawanda (thisgirllovetoread) | 3 comments The character I choose was Curley. Curley is a small person in a big mans world. He picks on men that he knows he can beat to prove that he is manly. Curley is the son of the man who owns the farm that everyone is working on. He can mess with people because he knows that if he tells his father then they will be fired. His mean handicap is his wife, his wife is always around big strong men and Curley is trying to prove to his wife in away that even though he is short he can take a big man down.

message 24: by Breona (new)

Breona | 1 comments The character I like the most is Lennie. He is mentally challenged and he kills things often only because he doesn't know his own
strength. He is gentle and loving and he is unaware of the dangers that are ahead of him.

message 25: by Kerin2010 (new)

Kerin2010 | 1 comments To me Lennie has the biggest handicap in Of Mice and Men. I think this because he is obviously mentally ill. He can not think for himself, take care of himself, and he is slow. He even is becoming a burden for George. The conflict here is man vs himself because inside he just wants to be a normal person, however the more he tries to help the more problems he causes.

message 26: by Arlette 2010 (new)

Arlette 2010 | 5 comments the character that I chose is Lennie. I chose him because even though he has a problem he is just as smart as everyone else. I do not like using the word RETARTED to describe someone I rather say that he has disfunction. through out the whole book lennie is amused with rabbits and soft, shinny and silky objects that are drawn to his attention. through out this book lennie is always in his own little world of dreams. nice, calm and beautiful dreams that help him relax. he may have trouble comprehending things, but don't let that always full you. you can be surprised as to what lennie can always bring to the woods.

message 27: by Charniece (new)

Charniece | 4 comments Juliene I'm shocked that this writing piece was produced by you. After reading your character analysis it motivates me to give Of Mice and Men a second chance. At first glance this book really made me not even want to crack open the book to the first page. Honestly, I still haven't made it further than the first page. Ignoring the popular saying : "don't judge a book by its cover" that's immediately what I did with Of Mice and Men. I looked at the weird old country looking cover and read the back summary of the book. The first impression this book gave me totally turned me off of wanting to read it, I figured I wouldn't be able to relate anyway. Now, after reading your analysis and your interpretation of the book I'm excited to get started. From reading what you wrote so far it leads me to believe that I would be able to relate not only to the characters but the plot. Thanks looking forward to seeing more of your work.

message 28: by Charniece (new)

Charniece | 4 comments Judith I think you need to go back and re-read the plot of Of Mice and Men a little closer. Candy is not missing an arm he is missing a hand. You also did not point out any of Candy's conflicts you just put fourth his handicap. If I were to revise your piece it would go as follows:

The characters I choose to write about were Candy and his dog. I choose Candy because his name alone is interesting to me. Have you ever heard of an old man named Candy? Well, I know i haven't heard of and old man named Candy... let a lone a man with the obvious female name. Candy is an old man in the story who is missing a hand. Candy's conflict is man vs. society Candy has to face the society everyday with his handicaps of being old and missing a hand. Society views Candy as someone useless and washed up.

I choose the dog because although all characters in Of MIce and Men had handicaps and disabilities the dog had the most. The dog was unable to eat, sleep, see, hear, and was old and sick. The dog like his owner faced the conflict of man vs. society. The dog like his owner had to face society everyday with his handicaps and was seen as useless and washed up to society. Sadly unlike his owner the poor dog's life was taken away. The dog also faced the conflict of nature vs. self. The dog faced the conflict of fighting to stay alive his body wanted to die but his mind wanted to stay alive. His connection and love for his owner wanted to keep him alive.

message 29: by Charniece (new)

Charniece | 4 comments Ashley I'm not surprised to see that you produced this character analysis. However, I like the way you took the story and this character and related to yourself. It's always good when you're reading a story to try and make a connection with the plot.

message 30: by Veasna (new)

Veasna Huon (veenizzle) | 4 comments In the book there are many characters with handicaps, but one handicap I believe to be is there brotherhood. The brotherhood seem to have a downfall as betrayal and rumors run around stirring up trouble between allies. They all work as a team when it comes to decisions, such as the killing of candy's dog and the plan. They all decided as one but united they stand divided they all fall then it's a free for all. As Curly's wife seductivley put Slim in a world win of testostromes. Then Curly find's out and then there's beef between them. Curly is a punk so he decide's to pick on the slowest of them all so he won't get a beating from Slim. Lennie is then beat up because he was the most obvious target and George is Lennie's to go man. So if you pick on Lennie you pick on George. Then it goes all down hill from there, Lennie busted face leaking with blood and Curly with a crushed hand. Now it comes down to Curly will he be a snitch and tell? See how easily a brotherhood can fall..hehe

message 31: by Morgan (new)

Morgan Williams | 1 comments Im finally on here to write about a character from "Mice and Men". You (Mr. Romero) have repeatedly went over the group discussion on character's and their "handicaps", in class. So, after 3 days of hearing the same thing over and over, I decided to finally come on here and pick a character. The character I decided to pick the character is Curley.
Curley is a thin young man with a brown face, with brown eyes and a head of tightly curled hair. He always wears a glove on his left hand. Plus, Curley is married to the only women walking round the ranch, and is the boss's son. Things for Curley look pretty good. It doesn't really seem as he has any "handicaps". Unforunatly, for Curley he does, and its one his stuck with for the rest of his life.
Curley is short. Out of all the men that he works with and around he is the shortest. Everyone else is tall and big. So, if you were looking on the outside of the ranch and notice all the workers, you would automaticly point out Curley as the weakest ,or the less productive one. How do you think that makes him feel? Being short myself I figure it makes him feel better low.
This is why Curley walks around with a boxing glove, and potty mouth. He acts like he is big and bold to make up after his height. He probably would to if you where tiny around a bunch of big men.
This is the character's Curley "handicap".

message 32: by Charniece (new)

Charniece | 4 comments Everyone choose Lennie because he was the obvious choice. You should have challenged yourself and picked a different character to analyze. However, I have to applaud you because although many people choose lennie you analyzed him a little deeper than most.

message 33: by Miranda (new)

Miranda | 1 comments I am really impressed with how many of you are utilizing this site to share ideas and opinions. Everyone that posted their response to Mr. Romero's prompt will receive a 25 pt. bonus in my class.

In response to Charniece's criticism, Lennie is a unique protogonist BECAUSE he is helpless and burdensome. We are used to the main character, the "hero" of the story, being strong and smart and capable- the one who saves the princess or wins the war. However, when we reflect on our own lives, I think many of us connect with Lennie. We are the main character in the story of our lives, yet we remain powerless and voiceless against the oppression or pressures we feel from our parents, peers, teachers, government, etc. How often have we felt so optimistic and happy about future possibilities, only to have our hopes dashed by grim reality.

~MsT

Jamahal 2010 | 2 comments I chose to write about curly's wife she is handicaped in a way that you probably would not think is really handicaped she is addicted to the touch of a man and needs one at all times. Is a big flirt. Has the shortest man and weakest on the farm and everyone else is big and strong so you know that is a problem so she flocks to the the bigger and stronger men

message 35: by Iveryd (last edited May 02, 2008 07:31AM) (new)

Iveryd | 3 comments I want to analyze George because he reminds me of myself. I say this because I am the type of person who will have a person hang around me all the time, and wouldn't tell them to leave. Even if I am sick of them. Thats shows just how nice, I am. I see george as being, strong but weak, nice but mean, sensitive but tough.
I say he is strong but weak because he is very hard working, but he lets Lennie hold him back. I said George is nice but mean because, he always tells Lennie that he is sick of him but he still lets Lennie hang around. George is also sensitive but tough, because he told helped Lennie fight curly, but he was scarred when Lennie broke Curly's fingers. All these characteristics describe me.

message 36: by Jada (new)

Jada | 4 comments The person that I think has a handicap is Curly's wife. She is a person with no true identity she's known throughout the book as Curly's wife and perceived as a promiscuous person. On top of her having no identity she's the only main female figure in the book.

I think what Steinbeck is trying to say is that in the 1930's women had no true place in a mans world. All a women was good for was to look good and please a man. This could be the reason that she dresses the way she does and stays married to a man that she doesn’t love. =/

message 37: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kellya) | 6 comments The character I chose was Lennie because he was just helpless to me because he didn't know how to fend for himself every time he was spoken to he always looked to George for answers and that basically gave it away that he didn't have since enough to communicate with others. So he was an big helpless object surrounded by a whole different world other then rabbits, puppies, and mice.

message 38: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kellya) | 6 comments Another character I chose was curly's wife she just seemed unsure of what she really wanted, she acted like she wasn't even married, every time she seen a man on the ranch she would unnesary conversation with the men so they would make a move on her and that to me is an handy-cap desperate woman kinda like a sex fein.

message 39: by Ashleigh 2010 (new)

Ashleigh 2010 (ashcashduh) | 2 comments The character I chose was George. I chose George because I liked the compassion he had for Lennie. In the book George is the caretaker of a mentally ill person names Lennie. Some people see George as trying to get over on Lennie because he is mentally ill. I don’t think so I believe that George is “tough love” type of guy. Even though sometimes he seems to mean to Lennie or seem to be harsh to people, I think that he has to be this way. The only person George has is Lennie and he just needs to be that way so nobody will tear them apart. At the end of this book yes George doe something that might seem like “back stabbing” to some people but he did out of the love he has for Lennie. Yes George seemed like a big jerk, but his attitude is to society and not people in general. He has this attitude because there’s only one person he has in this world.

message 40: by Anyea12 (new)

Anyea12 | 2 comments I choose candy's dog because he represents the person who never got a break. the underdog, the loser, the one nobody wants, an out cast, a victim of society. candy's dog is symbolic and that is what i like about it is that Steinbeck uses a lot of abstract characters that if you took the time to analyze it relates a lot to our society today and I'm pretty sure you can think of instances where a person Isn't wanted and because the don't quite fit in with our "Barbie" fantasy world he gets screwed over only to be taken out by the people closest to him.

message 41: by Charles (new)

Charles | 2 comments The Character I will like to chose is Curley. I chose Curley because despite his size he aint afraid of anybody, and he does the weirdest things by going after big people. Curley is a jealous kinda guy, he wants to be big and in charge, but he sees Lennie, this big guy and his first reaction was to go after him, he is a predator towards big people. He sees Slim as challenging his authority and he's feels offended by that since he feels as if he has authority. When slim comes around he always is looking for trouble. Slim does another weird thing he keeps vaseline in his glove for his wife! Curley plays an awkward part in this book and that is why I chose to speak upon him.

message 42: by Lamin (new)

Lamin | 4 comments The character i choose was Candy. his handicap, is that his an old man, and had only one hand. The conflict is man vs society. Most of the worker's takes advantage of him being old and of him missing a hand. I think Society views Candy as someone useless and washed up.
