Generally, Frederick Douglass didn't feel like human becasue he was a slave. However, not being free didn't take Frederick's humanity away. Frederick felt dehumanized, because his master didn't want him to learn how to read. for instance, when his master's wife Sophia started to teach him few lessons, his master would get upset and take the book away from him with angry arms. Clearly, Humanity was something that frederick needed, and something that was taken away from him when they separated him from his mother. Humanity is to feel emphaty for others, therefore Frederick never though about him self. Furthermore, he will always feel emphaty for others, taking care of his fellows slaves.
