Nicky (soundgirl) | 1388 comments Um, is it just me being a dope or has the 'popcorn' thread disappeared? I had a go at posting something the other day and now I can't find it - I'm now slightly paranoid in case I broke it?!

M | 11617 comments Thanks for the alert, Nicky!

It wouldn’t be the first time a thread has disappeared. I’m surprised the W.S.S. hasn’t become known as The Group of Mysteriously Disappearing Threads.

Here it is:

message 206: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Blake | 1231 comments So, I'm trying to find a book/story from my early school days. I don't remember who wrote it, or what it was called...that would make things too easy. What I do remember is that it was about a bet.

I believe it went something like: A group of wealthy guys are talking about solitary confinment as a form of punishment, one of them says it wouldn't be hard to do, they make the bet with him that he couldn't do it, he voluntarily lets them lock him up, and then starts to loose it the longer he's locked up.

If anyone recognizes this story and could help me find it I would greatly appreciate it.

message 207: by [deleted user] (new)

Is it a short story?

message 208: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Blake | 1231 comments It was either a long short story or a short novella, I think we read it around 5th or 6th grade.

message 209: by Ryan (last edited Feb 11, 2014 07:31PM) (new)

Ryan | 5334 comments 'The Bet' by Anton Chekhov?

message 210: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Blake | 1231 comments That's it Ryan, thank you both so much.

Hi Nicky! I panicked just a bit, but no, it's still there :))

I read that short-story in school too. It is awesome!

Ricky (rickyreads) Should we post our story submissions as comments?

message 217: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 5334 comments Hi, Maya. I just answered your question in the story thread where you first posted it. Please have a read there :)

message 218: by Nicky (new)

Nicky (soundgirl) | 1388 comments Hi, Just me again!

When I do the word association game I always have to go back to the last place I left off and read down before joining in again - just one of my weird quirks I think, but a couple of times when I went back the posts seemed to have changed. At first I thought maybe it was just me mis-reading them - that wouldn't be unheard of for me, but this time it has definitely changed. The word before my post was 'black' I remember this distinctly because I was thinking of putting 'little black dress' but as it is a one word only game I didn't think that would work, I toyed with 'black tie' as an alternative but decided on 'board' instead. Now when I look back the post before is 'wives'.
Can anyone explain what's happened?
It's a bit disconcerting.

message 219: by Gary (new)

Gary | 222 comments It happens when using the app on a phone I believe. Check the "days ago posted" before you post.

When I click on notifications using my phone, I directly connected to a word Garrison wrote 27 days ago. This has been consistent. I hit the up arrow on the top right corner and it takes me to the actual most recent reply. It's a little frustrating. Hope this helps.

message 220: by Nicky (new)

Nicky (soundgirl) | 1388 comments Hi Gary,

I was just about to put that I don't think that's what is happening - I don't use a phone and I usually do go to the newest entry but I double checked back to the tread and now I'm doubting myself!
Right! I'm going to try to keep track now and see if it happens again!
Thanks

message 222: by Nicky (new)

Nicky (soundgirl) | 1388 comments Oh, I hope so, that's a much more interesting answer!

message 223: by Martin (new)

Martin | 82 comments I want to practice my graphic novel skills and I'd like to know if I could create a short comic for the contests here. I'm sure I probably cant since the rules stay a certain amount of words per story and everyone who's read a comic knows how little words there may be on a page, sometimes none. But it wouldn't hurt to ask if its okay.

message 224: by [deleted user] (new)

Question: I have been participating in the poem and short story contests for quite a while now and know that many of you have read the pieces that I have posted. If you haven't, please feel free to do so and/or go to the Creative Writing section to read my other works. I am thinking about writing another novel. My question is, based on what you have read, what genre do you believe suits me best? Is my writing good enough to start another novel? Do you think I would do well? I am not asking WHAT to write, just what type of novel you think would work best for my style. Thank you so much, in advance, for your opinions!

message 225: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 5334 comments Hi, Melissa. I am frequently impressed by your ability to write a poem and a short story each week that are always of such high standard. I'd imagine this work ethic would translate well into a novel. I think you tell a good story and have a strong grasp on the technicalities of writing and language. Perhaps you could compile a collection of short stories for publication. That way you've got plenty of material already and could extend some of your competition entries into slightly longer pieces. You may even find a way to incorporate a couple of poems. If you haven't tried it before, there is a program called Scrivener that you can download and trial for free for 30 days before you decide if it's worth buying. You'll find it really helpful if you decide to write a collection of shorts.

message 226: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you for such nice words, Ryan! I self-published a novel several years ago and although there were many mistakes within the book I still received lots of wonderful compliments from family, friends and even complete strangers. I think I am at the point where I would like to give it another whirl. I don't know if I would self-publish again or just do it basically for myself. I will check out Scrivener! Thank you so much for the suggestion!

message 227: by [deleted user] (new)

Melissa! Your stories are engaging :) I agree with Ryan, you can always start a collection of short stories (the one you've written and posted here) or focus on one and make it longer.

I feel like I'm not making sense hehehe

message 228: by [deleted user] (new)

No, no, you are making perfect sense! I really value your opinions. Everyone in the group has been so nice to me -- that's why I turned to y'all for advice. :-)

message 229: by Garrison (new)

Garrison Kelly (cybador) | 10136 comments If you want to make a collection of short stories and poetry, go for it, Melissa. You have the skills to pay the bills. :)

message 230: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha, Garrison! I seriously doubt anyone would ever really pay me for my writing but I take that as an ultimate compliment! I really want to write a novel again ... maybe not to self-publish like I did in the past though. Even if I never make money with my writing, it is fun for me and a kind of therapy as well. That's what it's all about anyway, right? :-)

message 233: by Anne (new)

Anne (annefrn) | 916 comments Hi,I'm new to this & can't figure out how to submit a story for the weekly contests or how to view the stories submitted for the contests! What am I missing? Thanks! Anne

message 234: by [deleted user] (new)

Anne, Hi and welcome to the group! I love it here and hope you will as well. I don't know if anyone has answered your question as of yet or if you have figured it out on your own but when you get into the group and scroll down, you will see a heading for the Weekly Short Story Contests as well as for the Weekly Poetry Contests. Once a week an administrator will announce a topic. (This week's topic is HEAT). You must remain within that topic when writing. There is also a folder that explains the rules as well. There are a LOT of excellent writers here so the "competition" is stiff but they have all inspired me with my writing and given wonderful comments. No one has been mean at all. I hope you are able to peruse all the excellent writing and I look forward to reading yours as well! :) --Melissa

Thanks Melissa! So it's just clicking on the link to post a comment & entering it there, right? I guess it was too easy -- I was looking for a separate link that says something like "Click here to enter your story" or something like that :) Thanks!

message 236: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, that's all you do. I haven't been on Goodreads a long time but I have learned a lot just by clicking and exploring. There are TONS of wonderful things to do here!

message 237: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 5334 comments Hi, Anne. I apologise for only getting to your question now - being a moderator doesn't pay as well as I'd hoped so I still have to attend my day job from time to time.

Luckily this group is full of friendly, helpful people like Melissa who are always happy to lend a hand.

As Melissa has mentioned, once you're satisfied you've complied with the few associated rules, just paste your entry directly into the thread via the 'add comment' button. If you get stuck, please feel free to send me a PM and I'm sure we can fix it in no time. Enjoy the group.

Thank you for your help, Melissa, it's greatly appreciated.

message 238: by [deleted user] (new)

You're welcome. Maybe I shouldn't have taken it upon myself to answer the question but I thought I would try. I learn a lot by just hunting and pecking. If I can help someone I will try though.

Thanks! I just posted my contribution for Heat, so I look forward to feedback & recommendations from the group. Anne

Thanks, Ryan! I am glad that I could help Anne. I never want to overstep my bounds.

Cool, Anne! I will go read it right now! :)

message 242: by Brendan (new)

Brendan It doesn't matter this week. But for future reference:

When are poems and stories due? Specifically.

message 243: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 5334 comments Hi, Brendan. If you look at the first post in each week's competition (poetry and story), you will see the closing date for entries.

message 244: by Brendan (new)

Brendan That's why I asked for a specific deadline. It seems to just have days without times. Unless I'm selectively blind. Ha ha.

I guess I can continue reading and not entering though. No worries.

message 245: by M (last edited Jul 04, 2014 07:28AM) (new)

M | 11617 comments For Week 219, July 2 is the last day you can safely assume that you can post an entry in the contests for that week. The prudent thing to do is to assume that the deadline is the moment July 2 turns into July 3. In actuality, the deadline occurs when a moderator gets around to putting up the polls; so from week to week the time you have for posting a poem or a story may vary quite a bit, depending on how busy or tired or disorganized the moderators happen to be.

message 247: by [deleted user] (new)

I feel this is a silly question, but I just wanted to make sure. If we made changes to our short stories or poems, can change it in our post?

message 248: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 5334 comments Sure, Bre. No problem doing that at all. And there's no such thing as a silly question :)

message 249: by [deleted user] (new)

Harsh Gupta (harshg162) | 66 comments I just submitted my story for this week's contest on the topic "A Fly on the Wall."

I have a query.

If I post this story on my blog now, will it violate rules of the contest.

PLZ help me.
