The classics are classics and shouldn't be reduced to this kind of stupidity. If this is the only way we can get kids to read it, then something is very wrong with our society.
::steps off soapbox for next person::

Dessa, I know it's about the almighty dollar and that just gives me fits. ::stomps foot like a 3 yr old:: Can't it just be about the books? :|

Nah, I agree with you, Dessa, as long as the "new" covers editions don't cost much...not like they have to pay royalties to the Bronte sisters or anything...

I do think there's something about introducing it to the masses, though... even if it is kind of obnoxious.

That is disgusting. Emily Bronte would turn in her grave if she knew that that shite called the Twilight series was being used as a means to sell her book.

Welcome to TC Cynthia - Go Cyclones?
Meh.
It's a great book. If that's how kids find it, then that's how they do. I don't care what the cover looks like. If they buy it and make it through it they will be better readers for it.

It's a shameless ploy to get Twilight readers to read Emily Bronte. It'll work, of course.
People bitched when Oprah pimped The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and Anna Karenina, but she got people who normally couldn't be bothered with Tolstoy to read his work. So there.

By the way, I'm pretty sure Wuthering Heights was the Twilight of its' day. Which makes me shudder to think Twilight would be regarded as a classic some 200 years from now.
Exactly.
Same with the Harry Potter books. People were up in arms about kids reading so-called "witchcraft", but they failed to realize one thing: at least those kids are reading, and reading leads to more reading. Would you rather your kids rot their brains with video games and junk television?
I won't give people who read Twilight or Dan Brown or whatever pop culture fluff literature grief. Reading is one of the few things people need to do more of.

"In Eclipse, Bella reads Emile Bronte's tale of obsessive love, and both she and Edward use quotes from the book to describe unspoken feelings. But readers are taking the connection one step further, comparing Edward and Bella to Heathcliff and Cathy.
"Something good might just come out of this crazy Twilight phenomenon, and it has nothing to do with Robert Pattison's hair. French teenage girls are snatching up copies of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, after Stephenie Meyer's latest Twilight book, Eclipse, made reference to the dark classic.
"We have sold as many copies of Wuthering Heights in the first two months of 2009 as we usually sell in a whole year," says the publisher of the French translation of Wuthering Heights, Les Hauts de Hurlevent. "We are on course to sell several tens of thousands of copies this year, which is exceptional."
Bella sites this from WH:
"If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger."

And, hey, it's WAY better than movie tie-in covers! Hate those. :(

Oh, come on! Someone had to say it!
I get it too.

Relax. I am always precise in my stabbing.
Wow, that's a relief, tosses shield next to hockey face mask. ::making mental note not to piss Catalina off due to stabbing accuracy::

Yes Jim, I went to ISU and live just south of campus. Not a big sports fan, save the fabulous women's basketball team. I love those girls--they are smart, volunteer their time to worthy causes, and unlike the male basketball players, they seem to study hard and graduate on time! thanks for the welcome, have you been to AMES, IOWA??
Never been to Ames, just know ISU is there. And yay for the women's basketball team, I really appreciate those who take the time to volunteer.

But I'm with Gretchen. As long as that's not the only cover you can get, and it won't be, than whatever opens people up to reading. I hate movie tie-ins and the like too. The only exception is I found a copy of The Haunting of Hill House. The best thing about that movie version is the poster anyway.

I just don't know how many Twilight lovers will really get through it.
It is quite a different kind of book.

I'm going to vomit...
I'm with the folks who think that any way to get people to read the classics is good. I am ashamed to admit I never read Pride and Prejudice (I did read Wuthering Heights, though) and now I want to read it because I want to read P&P with zombies because zombies are funny and I don't think I would enjoy it as much without first having read the classic. So if it works on me, someone who is quite aware of what it's doing, then it's going to work on the less initiated in the ways of guerrilla marketing (like I'm an expert).
Larry, what movie is that pic from? It looks like the Grease version of Buffy.
Who's DFW?
King and Sarah: You both rock. I found the Blade movies kind of too violent and boring (okay, I'm aware that's an odd sentence). Buffy rocks. Am I the only one who doesn't think Edward is good looking? His hair is too big.
Last night I babysat for some friends who went to a Twilight Ball. They were really excited because they love Twilight. They paid $89 each to get in. What did they get for that? Free soda and some music. No stars, no food, drinks were $10 each. Apparently there were some folks from a spoof but other than that it was nerdy women in prom dresses and about four men (out of 50-100 people). It was held in a really businessy venue, too. It just sounds horrid.

Angel brooded wonderfully. Edward pouts.

And he really, really can't dance. :)
12 seconds of pure hilarity

That Cullen dude sparkled??
