message 1: by Aleh (new)

Aleh | 18 comments Hello everyone! My friends and I were discussing villains recently and then the thought occurred to me. I don't believe I've read a book where the villain is the protagonist and stays a villain. Maybe a story where evil does win?

any ideas?

message 2: by Tobin (new)

Tobin | 19 comments In the Sherrilyn Kenyon Dark-Hunter series, the villian Stryker gets his own book called One Silent Night. Although he does get his HEA, He is still a bad dude at the end. Its like the 15th book in the series btw.

message 3: by Aleh (new)

Aleh | 18 comments Ahh True! I guess it is as rare as i thought

message 4: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (cooldrenth) | 51 comments Tobin is the Dark-Hunter series a good read?

message 5: by Aleh (new)

Aleh | 18 comments Absolutely, I’ve read them all myself and enjoyed each one. I highly recommend them. The first one Fantasy Lover is said to be a bit cheesy to some but I loved it.

Kathy (cooldrenth) | 51 comments Thank you, Aleh I will look for the books next time I am in the book store. I like chessy sometimes. Do you know how many are in the series?

message 7: by Tobin (new)

Tobin | 19 comments I loved the Dark-hunter series, it helped me get through my Black Dagger Brotherhood withdrawals! Like Aleh said the plot in Fantasy lover is pretty... simple but I think it is a necessary read for the start of this series.

message 8: by Tobin (new)

Tobin | 19 comments Kathy - there are currently 18 in the series, but the books are pretty short and they are easy reads. I hope you enjoy them!

Ok, there is another book (only 1 of 2 books written by the author) where the villains save the world--AND stay "evil" to the end. Villains by Necessity. Actually in this book, the positions seem to be reversed. The villains seem to be more honourable and honest than the "heroes" do. But they are all proud to call themselves villains, and they do fight those who follow the Light (or are good)

Wild for Wilde (wildforwilde) if you don't have a good villain, you may as well stop reading the book in my opinion! a lot of books are about good vs evil and triumphing over evil but does anyone really see it as that black and white? I think there is grey area; that everyone has a good and evil side to them and a good story is about the protagonist choosing to act on the good side.

message 12: by Danielle The Book Huntress (last edited Jan 13, 2010 09:21AM) (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments I agree with you about the importance of a good villain, Wild. I do think that an author should show the grays and how choosing good or evil is a daily choice. You are not always going to do the right thing, and fictional characters should have the struggle like us real life people.

lol, the book I recommended--the villians really ARE great--and the heros, who play the same role in this book as the villains usually do (meaning its from the opposite pov) are also a good read. You really DO love to hate these heroes. :o)

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm not too sure about villains who stay villains as main characters, but I'll be thinking on it

I just wanted to chime in that the Dark Hunter books are some of my absolute favorites, as well as Kenyon's new series, The League.

message 15: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (fireweaver) Wilde, i also agree re well-written villains. on the rare occasion it happens, it's so refreshing to have a nemesis that's actually as well developed as a character as the other guys in the book. IMHO, the crappy villains are the weakest part of the BDB books.

as far as villains that stay that way throughout the book, check out 'soon i will be invincible'
Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman
not paranormal romance at all, but completely hilarious and a fun read.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Romance authors should take a note from video game writers. RPG villains are much more fun than most romance villains.

I was just thinking of OSN. It still doesn't sit right with me. Daimons shouldn't have their HEA.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I think that was Sherrilyn's way of saying even bad guys aren't all bad, but I tend to agree. I liked the book, but when I think of all the stuff Stryker did to Ash, that sours me, and I just want someone to take him out.

message 19: by Aleh (new)

Aleh | 18 comments I completely agree to the comment about needing a good villain a story. I was just wondering what it would be like to be on the villains side even if it is wrong and dark. Seems as though I’ll have to write the book myself. LOL Wish me luck with that!

message 20: by Heather C (new)

Heather C (heathercook) | 44 comments I didn't like Stryker's story. I don't think it was him, just his whole story was off and I really didn't like his h. Kenyon could have made the romance/love more beleivable. I liked that book the least out the entire series, not because Stryker was a villian, I was actually looking forward to his story. It just did not live up to my expectations.

Aleh--read the book I recommended Villains by Necessity. That's all told from the villains pov.

message 22: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (cooldrenth) | 51 comments Thank you Tobin and Kate. I started to read book 1 in the Dark-Hunter serises and I really like it so far.

Tobin | 19 comments Kathy wrote: "Thank you Tobin and Kate. I started to read book 1 in the Dark-Hunter serises and I really like it so far. "
No problem, the books get better as the series progresses, I hope you like it! I am currently re-reading Kiss of The Night which is #5 in the series. Great books!

message 24: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (cooldrenth) | 51 comments Yes, the first one was very good. I just finish it a couple of hours ago. I cannot wait to start the next one. I just need to buy it. I think that I will buy a few so that I can just keep read one after the other. I am really look forward to the rest of the books.

message 25: by Aleh (new)

Aleh | 18 comments I took Michelle's advise and read Soon I Will Be Invincible. It was quite funny. I enjoyed it though still searching for a real evil. haha

message 26: by Wild for Wilde (new)

Wild for Wilde (wildforwilde) I think if you are looking for real evil, you would have to read a non-fiction book about someone like Jeffery Dahmer or Osama bin Laden. That would be probably depressing and very unpleasant to read though : P

Tobin wrote: "I loved the Dark-hunter series, it helped me get through my Black Dagger Brotherhood withdrawals! Like Aleh said the plot in Fantasy lover is pretty... simple but I think it is a necessary read for..."

I agree too Fantasy Lover needs to be the first read. Julian is in a couple of the books so I think people need to know who he is and his story. I know she usually gives a brief recap of people in each book but like so you said, the plot is simple so it won't take much to read this book. Plus it is funny

message 28: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments I'd like to read something with sympathetic villains too. And not in a humorous way. That would be interesting.

message 29: by Aleh (new)

Aleh | 18 comments Oh my no Wild for Wilde. I don't want to go that far.

More of a paranormal romance evil type of deal. I sounds like fun. Tired of all the goodie goodies ;)

message 30: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments I agree, Aleh. :D

message 31: by Denell (new)

Denell | 7 comments I've read Bitten and Stolen by Kelley Armstrong and even though the books are about the "good guys" the characters still have to due terrible things..and live afterwards with it. I've really enjoyed these books cause it gives such an all round description of Elena and Clay. They are not good or bad...just trying to life their own lifes and protecting those they love no matter what.

These books fall definately in the gray moral area and I love it! :)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments I like the evil-ish heroes. Something very appealing about them. But I don't want to serial killer, cannibal, child murderers, etc. as the so called antihero.

I love Clay. What a good example, Denell.

message 33: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments I think this definitely qualifies as a novel told from the point of view of the villain: Vampire Vow. Warning: graphic violence and everything else.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments When you say everything else, that makes me curious, NU.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments Wow. I think that one might be too intense for me, NU. Sounds interesting, though.

message 36: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments LOL. The reviews make it sound worse than it is, but he is definitely villainous.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments Is that a male, male book, NU?

message 38: by new_user (last edited Feb 09, 2010 12:47PM) (new)

new_user | 1389 comments Yeah, the main character is technically bisexual, but he loves men only, LOL.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments Cool, thanks. :)
