Tammi,
Beware of the comfort snack thread...it makes you crave weird stuff. :)

Thanks for the heads up ... it was logically my next stop so I could have done with this warning before :-))

But you know what they say: if you can't beat 'em, join 'em, so keep an eye out for my recommendations! I promise they'll only be good for you though :-)

Well, somehow we are now discussing eating cabbage worms and wax, so something went wrong somewhere along the line....haha!

message 254: by [deleted user] (new)

We don't eat them at the same meal!! Come on, Christine! lol

Mary Poppins would sing that just a spoonful of wax makes the wormies go down, the wormies go down, the wormies go down (sorry, I'm in a weird mood this morning and could not resist).

You are in a weird mood today! Thinking about How to Eat Fried Worms? :)

Manybooks Jeannette wrote: "You are in a weird mood today! Thinking about How to Eat Fried Worms? :)"

Sorry, but I don't think I would actually eat them (although I've eaten some strange foods and liked them). But, I do like gummi worms and salted licorice (you know, the Dutch kind, yum).

message 258: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannahr) I like the sour gummi worms. Yum :P

message 259: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 19, 2010 06:25AM) (new)

Gundula -- I meant are you thinking about the book, not actually eating worms! lol

I have never had salted licorice, as I don't care for licorice. :( (Don't like coconut, either)

Actually, I would love to reread that book. I have to go to our public library to pick up some books on Tuesday (and search for some other titles for the Children's Literature March/April book club reads), so maybe I'll check if they have the book.

Maybe, I'll buy some candy as well. I have not had salty licorice or sour candy for ages (and I like mine really sour).

Like those "Sour Spaghetti" gummies? My mouth is watering.

message 262: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannahr) Jeannette wrote: "Like those "Sour Spaghetti" gummies? My mouth is watering."

I'm not sure what they're called, but the ones I get look like big worms and each one is bi-colored in green & orange or blue & pink.

...I'm getting hungry for some now!

Me too!! And the original German "Gummibärchen" (Amazon Germany used to send small packs of these when you ordered books, but they don't do that anymore)

Now THAT was a nice extra with your order!

I'm going to have to go out today and buy some for the weekend :)

message 265: by Katri (new)

Katri (Valancy) | 68 comments Mmmm, salted liquorice... Us Scandinavians and the Dutch have a thing for that, while the rest of the world looks a bit weirdly on us. :D Though I'm not sure if the Scandinavian kind is the same as the Dutch; we call it salmiac (salmiakki/salmiak) and there's ammonium chloride in it, as well as liquorice and salt. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water... It's always funny to take those candies to foreigners and see if they go "(surprised face) Umm.... it's... interesting... No thanks, I don't need any more" or "Hmm... Wow... This is great, bring me more!" The latter are a minority, but they're fun to find. :D

I love salmiac, but unfortunately I can generally only find it at German delicatessens and the one in Hamilton is not only extremely crowded, last time they were out of salmiac licorice. I think the Dutch have both salted licorice with and without salmiac (for me, the saltier and stronger tasting, the more I like it, and it also stops you from overeating). I also like salted preserved plums (that's a Chinese candy) and spicy candies like tamarind with chillies.

Stitchywoman Hi everyone. I just joined the group and it's given me great ideas for future reads. Thanks all.

I have comfort books for different moods. I just finished reading The Secret Garden. Thornyhold by Mary Steward is another book I have read many times. The mystery cozies by Monica Ferris and the Jane Jeffrey's series by Jill Churchill. I've lost count how many times I've read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. The High King series by Lloyd alexander is a favorite of mine and my children (they used to love it when I made up different voices for the different characters in the book - especially Gurgi, his voice was really funny). Laura Kinsale romances. There are others but those are the main "go to" books. Wow, I didn't realize how many books are on that comfort shelf and how often I've reread them!

These books are like sitting down with old friends who make you feel really good and relaxed. I'm glad I'm not alone in rereading old favorites.

Hi Stitchywoman, welcome to the group!
Thanks for telling us about all your favourite comfort reads. You've named a few I'm unfamiliar with and that always makes me happy.
Feel free to join in the fun or just sit back and read for suggestions. We are a friendly group!

Welcome Stitchywoman! I have a horrible confession...I still haven't read Jane Eyre. Unacceptable, I know! I recently got a copy and plan to read it this year for sure.

Welcome Stichywoman! I love Thornyhold too, and just finished a re-read today! Enjoy the board - you're in good company :)

Manybooks I love this group. I don't ever have to explain why I read and reread certain books over and over again.

15 times eh? Which ones?

message 278: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannahr) Lee wrote: "15 times eh? Which ones?..."

The ones that pop immediately to mind are:
Trade Wind (M.M. Kaye)
Shadow of the Moon (M.M. Kaye)
The Long Winter (Laura Ingalls Wilder)
Trojan Gold (Elizabeth Peters)
And countless re-reads of Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden (in my girlhood)

Funny how none of these are especially well known or classics, but there is a personal appeal to me that hasn't ended yet!

I think M.M. Kaye is fairly well known. I haven't yet read any of hers but have several friends here who love her work.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Lee, I'd definitely recommend The Ordinary Princess, Lee. I'm not sure though that I'd recommend it to Maggie yet; maybe in another 3 years or so.

Here is a quote for you, attributed to Oscar Wilde:

"If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all."

message 284: by Diane (last edited Feb 25, 2010 02:08PM) (new)

Diane (dianedj) Hi Lee, Lisa and everyone!

My name is Diane and I live in Marina del Rey, California. I just noticed your Group as I was reading my Friends Updates. Christine is a friend of mine and I saw her comment on this group and I loved the name of it. After reading through a bit and seeing the group avitar I thought I'd really like to be a part of it.

I love books and many different types of genres. My favorite story is Wuthering Heights; not sure if that would be considered comfort -- LOL!

I also love animals and volunteer with animal rescue here in Los Angeles. I live with my partner of 15 years, Endre, and our 3 cats, Heidi, Dougy and Jack.

I look forward to getting to know everyone and to being part of the group. I may be doing more lurking than posting for a little while until I get my new computer at home.

message 285: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Diane

Any friend of Christine's is.... Welcome! (I love picking on Christine). I don't reread Wuthering Heights often enough, but it's one of my favorites. Join us for a chat sometime, at the very least! :)

message 286: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Welcome, Diane! So glad that you found us and joined. Participate when you can and have fun lurking whenever you want.

Wuthering Heights is on our bookshelves (feel free to check out those too) so someone/others have mentioned it as a comfort read.

Also, when you get a chance, feel free to vote in the polls. They remain open indefinitely.

Lorraine (saanichlori) Hello, I'm Lorraine. I also have a series of books I like to re-read for comfort. My favourite is Mary Stewart. I'm currently re-reading The Moon Spinners, a lovely book set in Greece. Also re-reading Anne's House of Dreams. Glad to see people of like mind!

Hi Lorraine,
It looks like we just cross posted! Welcome to the group! I recently re-read and enjoyed The Moon-Spinners. Mary Stewart is a great author for comfort reads. And there are many fans of L.M. Montgomery here too! I'm sure you will fit right in.

All of the above in addition to cross stitch, needlepoint, spinning, and weaving. I just love anything that has to do with fiber. Knitting is my main passion though(in addition to reading).
