That's a very nice list indeed, Kate. I love Jane Austen generally and Persuasion is probably my favourite novel of all time.

And I ADORE Ballet Shoes!

Hi, I'm Anne, and everytime I need a comfort read I turn to "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" (my favorite book that I read over and over again), and things like "The Secret Garden" and "Charlotte's Web" from when I was younger!

message 1459: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Anne. I love all 3 of those books! Welcome to the group.

Welcome, Kimmy! I just watched The Help a few weeks ago and thought they did a decent job with the movie.

message 1465: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Kimmy. Welcome to the group. I've always loved Little Women too. I still have the copy I read when I was 8 or 9. And I read and liked The Help, and I saw the movie recently, and I agree with Lee that they did a good job with the movie.

Vivian LeMay | 8 comments Hello Lee and everyone.
I am Vivian LeMay author of the Kindle series THE LAST LORD OF PARADISE.
I have always loved a good long read, Gone with the Wind, Atlas Shrugged, but my favorite read is anything by the French author Colette. I have a copy of her book The Vagabond that I've read into tatters. I enjoy the beauty of her words.

Vivian, I'm a big fan of Colette as well. I have one of her books, I believe it's titled My Life and Sido, in my bookshelf right now waiting to be read.

Sido, oh that's a beautiful book Lee. Colette paints a portrait of her mother, with words.

Hi Kimmy, I'm like you read the book, didn't see the movie - but I think we may be the only two people who didn't because all my friends are raving about the movie, so I may give in and go see it - or watch it on Comcast On Demand.

Bette Crosby (bette_lee_crosby) | 20 comments As I am browsing through this thread, I realized that when I joined the group, I just jumped into the various conversations, but never introduced myself. Duh. I am Bette Lee Crosby, author of Spare Change and a few other books. I live on the East Coast of Florida, with a wonderful hubby and a very spoiled Bichon who spends mpost of her day waiting for the mailman so she can bark at him. I'm also a notorious workaholic who doesn't know when to quit. I am big on cozy reads - not just mysteries, but all books with heart. Late at night I still watch reruns of shows like Frazier, Friends and The Golden Girls.

message 1478: by Brian (new)

Brian Finnegan | 8 comments Hi, I'm Brian and I'm a real comfort reader, so delighted to find this group. Just found Goodreads, actually, so I'd doubly happy. My ultimate comfort read is Pride and Prejudice. It's the book I've read more than any other and I always go back to it, because the Bennet family are now like my old friends.

What I love about Pride and Prejudice so much, apart from the devilish sense of humour that underpins it, is Austen’s unflinching eye. On the surface it’s a romance, painstakingly worked towards its triumphant conclusion scene by structured scene, but beneath that it works as a portrait of the place of women in society. Everyone gets married at the end, but it’s really about the self-determination of a woman who is not afforded the luxury of self-determination.

message 1479: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Brian! What an excellent analysis of Pride and Prejudice! My favorite is Persuasion, but I re-read all of Austen's works on a regular basis.

Hi, I'm Georgina. I'm an ecclectic reader but comfort reads get me through. Pratchett is a favourite, each novel re-read a hundred times (at least it feels like it). I also enjoy re-reading my favourite books as a child, and those books recommended to me by my daughter. :)

message 1484: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Georgina. Welcome to the group. I'm an eclectic reader also. Feel free to share your favorites in our various threads, and I'll bet members here will help you find many more comfort read books.

message 1488: by Faith (last edited May 27, 2012 03:08PM) (new)

Faith (faithbw) Hi everyone!

I've been a member for a while but I've done more lurking than posting. My name is Faith and my favorite comfort reads (I can't really pick one) are North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell North and South and Persuasion by Jane Austen Persuasion. I have both in my physical library as well as on my e-reader. I love them both!

message 1489: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Faith! Nice choice of comfort books! :) Persuasion is one of my all-time favorite books, and I love the book and the mini-series from North and South. Welcome!

message 1490: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) | 931 comments Great comfort reads choices there, Faith. I have to say that 'cos those books are big favourites of mine too!

message 1491: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Faith. Welcome to the group, officially. Thanks for posting. I just read Persuasion for the first time and North and South is on my to-read list. Many members in this group love both those books.

If you haven't yet seen the BBC production of North and South, run and get it! You will swoon with the beauty of it.

@Lee: I have the miniseries on DVD. I've watched it so many times. I love it!

message 1495: by Dena (new)

Dena | 4 comments Dena Badgett here, checking in. I read mystery, history, technical and scientific books a lot, but often a comfortable well written book is what I'm immersed in. Many of my books have been read to pieces. Manning Coles and D. E. Stevenson are two of my favorites. Maybe I'll find some new favorites here.

message 1496: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Welcome, Dena! I've never heard of Manning Coles, I'll have to check that author out. I hope you do find some new favourites, don't hesitate to jump in, join a conversation or ask questions.

message 1497: by Dena (new)

Dena | 4 comments Manning Coles was a writing team of two former British intelligence agents. The books date from the nineteen forties through fifties. Most are fairly light hearted spy novels although the first one Drink to Yesterday is quite sad being set during WWI. All the books are out of print of course, I've managed over the years to find most of them. They're great for escaping out of the present day.

Helena | 18 comments Hi all,
I joined here a long time ago and then kind of fell out of touch. I wanted to rejoin and realized I was still a member... so thanks for keeping me :) I'll try to be a little bit more active this time!! I'm one of the members from the Yahoo group WeLove2Read. I live in Sweden, my name is Helena. Currently I'm reading The Falls by Joyce Carol Oates. I like to read mainly contemporary, the occasional classic, mystery, some chic lit.
