Today I returned to my favorite comfort author, Ursula K Le Guin. I'm pretty sure I've even written a review about her healing powers before, but I don't have the energy to look it up.

Thanks all!

message 104: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 375 comments Greetings! I'm Kathryn from the foothills of Northern California and thanks to Lisa and Lee for helping me find this delightful group. While I enjoy reading a wide range of subjects and genres, I tend to focus on Brit lit (classics and contemporary chick-lit) and YA although I also love non-violent mysteries and fantasy ala Harry Potter. However, probably my favorite type of read is a "comfort read" falling into any of the above categories. I love nothing better than to meet some truly good writing that I can snuggle up with and know that none of my favorite characters will die, that their struggles and heartaches will result in stronger characters and happy-ever-afters and that I will come away from reading feeling as refreshed and rosy as if I had just soaked in a long, hot bath--ready to face life with a smile again. That, to me, is comfort reading! :-)

As to my favorite comfort books, gosh, it's hard to choose! Pretty much anything by Jane Austen and LM Montgomery--I also love some of Agatha Christie's lighter mysteries and PG Wodehouse's romantic comedy style novels. I'm a huge fan of Sophie Kinsella and Katie Fforde for chick-lit and Hester Browne's "Little Lady Agency" was a favorite of mine last year.

I also really love children's picture books and they are definitely comfort reads! And nothing brings me greater comfort than thoughts of my mom reading me "Whinnie the Pooh"

I'm so happy to find this group and look forward to adding more books to my towering TO READ stack! :-)

When I was a child I had an audio cassette of Wrinkle in Time. As I grew older, I went on to read it and it has always had a comforting feeling of nostalgia. Nice to meet you all! <3

message 109: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi erika, Thanks for joining us. That's interesting that you got introduced to A Wrinkle in Time via audio. It's one of my favorite books too.

Welcome Erika, I hope you find many new comforting books to read here. :-)

message 111: by {erika} (new)

{erika} (sapphire--stars) Thank you both! I hope so as well. I feel like I am in a book rut!! :( Which is the worst state of being. My real to-read shelf is overflowing but nothing is demanding to be read. I hope to find that something ASAP!

Cheryl (cherylcory) | 28 comments Hi, everyone! I'm Cheryl, and I'd really like to thank Lee for creating this group and Lisa for letting me know about it. What a fun idea for a group! :D

I'm a writer and tutor (math, writing...whatever ya need!) from Massachusetts. I'm married to an all-around awesome guy and we have one of the sweetest cats known to man.

I love to read (surprise! :P). I generally prefer to read serious non-fiction and fun fiction to balance it out, but I've been known to read a little of just about everything. I'm very much looking forward to hearing about everyone's favorite comfort reads!

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 47 comments My name is Kim and I am here becase Jill invited me. She thought I would like it here, and I feel that I will. I am a book addict and love to read all the time. I live in the Cleveland, Ohio area, run 2 group of my own here on Goodreads (one for books, one for those who like to bake and share recipes) and I have a wonderful boyfriend who is also an avid reader and seller of books. (He's one of my suppliers) I am also known by name to all the staff at my local library branch (my other suppliers) not only because I am there every day, but because I make them cookies.

I think my most frequently read book is "The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Gallaxy". I know it almost by heart, and it makes me laugh everytime. The boyfriend and I quite it frequently.

message 117: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kim, Welcome! Wow, That's amazing that you make cookies for the library staff. What a lovely thing to do. I hope you will enjoy our group!

Hi Kim, welcome to the group! I bet the library staff all have smiles on their faces when you come walking through the door! I'm sure you will find some great books suggested by our members and be sure to add your own. There are many categories of comfort reads if you scroll all the way down the page and we've also started a thread for movies at the bottom Enjoy!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi Tori, Welcome! Edited to add: We have at least one other fan of Boy's Life because the book is already on our bookshelves, and The Princess Bride is definitely there!

message 122: by Mary (new)

Mary | 245 comments Hi all. This looks like a fun group so thanks to Lee and Lisa and to Joy, who invited me to join.

Some of my comfort books include Chocolat and Rebecca. I also love books by Rumer Godden and southern lit such as The YaYa Sisters books, The Secret Life of Bees and, my favorite book from 2009, The Help.

Welcome, Mary! All books I've liked too; The Help is still on my to-read shelf.

Are there any particular Rumer Godden books that you've enjoyed and that were/are comfort reads?

I'm glad you joined Mary! Rebecca is one of my favorites too. I need to check out your other suggestions.

message 125: by Mary (new)

Mary | 245 comments Lisa I love The Greengage Summer and An Episode of Sparrows. I used to read The Story of Holly and Ivy to my daughter (now age 20!) every year at Christmas. It is beautifully illustrated by Barbara Cooney, another "comfort fav".

message 126: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Thanks, Mary, I'll add them to our group's shelves and check them out for myself.

Welcome Mary, I'm glad you've found us through Joy. I read my first Rumer Godden last year and enjoyed it. I have many more of hers on my to-read list.
Chocolat is a very charming book too!

message 128: by Julia (last edited Jan 14, 2010 12:19PM) (new)

Julia (jujulia) | 9 comments Hi to everyone!!! Gundula has invited me join and i love the idea of this group....

well (scratch my head....), i'm Julia (obviously), i live in salzburg and i'm another bathtub-reader. When i come home from work, my bf already turns on the faucet and prepares my current read as that's really my way of coming down after a long day.....a nice cup of coffee or a glass of nice red wine and my favourite book - that's heaven to me.....

for comfort, i enjoy anything which really engrosses me - can be really good historical fiction which i've been neglecting recently for many reasons likeEdward Rutherfurd's books or Gary Jenning's Aztec....also YA or children's lit does it for me, and also lots of "classics"....if i had to choose one author, i'd maybe say Jane Austen, but she's really just one of many....I've just started Anna Karenina and i think this could turn into one of those reads....

Hi Julia, welcome to the group! I've always wanted to be a bathtub reader but I just can't seem to my books dry. I hope you find lots more to read here!

message 130: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Julia, I gave up trying to read in the bathtub after dropping my umpteenth book into the water (like Lee). Welcome, this group is addictive; I'm not getting anything else done, but loving it.

Julia (jujulia) | 9 comments Lee wrote: "Hi Julia, welcome to the group! I've always wanted to be a bathtub reader but I just can't seem to my books dry. I hope you find lots more to read here!"

Probably it's just practice, as anything else in life!!! (and avoid huge hardcovers!!!! - honestly, that's one big reason (apart from the pecuniary side...) to go for paperbacks for me....

message 132: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (fallin) | 3 comments Tori wrote: 2 favs of mine is Boy's Life by Robert McCammon and (I know it's corny) but The Princess Bride."

Add me as another advocate of McCammon's Boy's Life. I wrote one of only two fan letters I've produced to Mr. McCammon because his book took me back so vividly to the magical suspension of disbelief of my childhood. (Talk about corny!) He wrote a very lovely note back, so is apparently a nice guy as well as a swell writer. If you spent a large part of your childhood blissfully free of moment-to-moment parental supervision and fear of Lyme Disease, riding away Saturday morning on your bike with a sandwich wax-paper-wrapped in your basket, not returning home until dinnertime, then you'll appreciate the time period and rural-blends-with-suburban setting he resurrects. You might also appreciate Ender's game (even if you normally do not enjoy SciFi), because there's a touch of that same feeling of empowered childhood somehow in both.

message 133: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Welcome, Julia, I was a big bathtub reader when I was younger, and I was very careful, but sometimes the bottom of the books got a tad wet anyway. I hope you enjoy this group; we're happy to have you.

message 134: by Lisa (last edited Jan 14, 2010 04:02PM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi again Elizabeth, I think this is the first time you've posted in this thread. Welcome.

That is so cool that Robert R. McCammon wrote back to you!

message 135: by dEnz (new)

dEnz (denz_thea) | 1 comments Hi to everyone, I'm Nenden from Indonesia. It seems fun & lovely to join with this group. I haven't read many books because I'm still learning & improve my English. I can see that people here have an interesting reference for good books. Recently my favorite comfort read is Alchemist from Paulo Coelho. Well, I hope I can learn something from this group... ;D

p.s. my English is not very good, I hope it can be much better soon. ;)

message 136: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hello Nenden, Welcome! Your English seems fine; you communicate well. I hope you enjoy this group and find some good comfort books to read.

message 137: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello Julia, I am insanely jealous not that you are able to read in the tub, but that you come home and your bf has drawn a bath for you!! Bliss!

Hello Elizabeth, thanks for the excellent summary of Boy's Life. This sounds like the kind of book my teen daughter will love.

Hello Nenden, your English is a lot better than you believe! I hope everyone here can help you find some good books to read!

message 138: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Nenden, your English is fine, and some of us had to go through the same process as you at one time (learning English as a second and sometimes even a third language). Just keep reading, it's one of the best ways of learning a language (and so comforting and enlightening as well).

message 139: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Welcome Nenden, don't let your worry about language keep you from enjoying participating. We have a few other wonderful members from Indonesia here as well. I hope you find some appealing new books and enjoy the group.

I used to love bathtub reading...ah memories! But then I started book swapping and worried too much about water damage making my books unworthy. And no way would I let my Kindle near water, haha!

message 141: by Olivia (new)

Olivia | 2 comments Hi, my name is Olivia and I'm attending school in Canada. I like receiving book recommendations and there are many out there that I want to read. My program is English and I'm enjoying it. I tend to like fiction books with conflicted characters and an interesting plot. I also like an author who can unravel his/her story with an interesting style. :) Hope to make some more friends on this site.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Welcome, Olivia! We're happy you could join us. From the description of the type of books you like, I suspect my to-read shelf will grow when you start posting your favorite comfort read books.

Please feel free to check out the threads and start posting whenever you'd like. I'll be interested in seeing what books you've enjoyed.

Kimberly Howdy everyone. I'm Kimberly and my comfort reads are the Harry Potter series and any Clive Cussler book and The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede and the Earth's Children Series by Jean M. Auel oh and Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane.

message 146: by Lisa (last edited Jan 18, 2010 08:19PM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi Kimberly. Welcome!

I also find the Harry Potter series to be comfort reads and I (unlike most I know) like Jean Auel's books too, especially the first one The Clan of the Cave Bear. I've heard of Kaffir Boy: An Autobiography--The True Story of a Black Youth's Coming of Age in Apartheid South Africa. I'll check out those Wrede books.

Thanks for sharing some of your favorites.

Feel free to peruse the threads and share more. I hope you find some more comfort reads from the members of this group.

ETA: Any particular Clive Cussler book(s)?
ETA again: Somebody has mentioned Pacific Vortex! because it's already on the group shelves.

Lianne (eclecticreading) Hi everyone! My name is Li and I'm from Canada =) My comfort books include Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (favourite book of all time), Jane Austen's Persuasion (my favourite Austen book ever; the end gets me every time xD) and Daniel Silva's books (especially comforting in times of stress and essay deadlines are looming on the horizon xD Sadly I've read all of his books and have to wait until July for his latest book to come out in paperback, lol). Looking forward to chatting with you guys =)

message 149: by Lisa (new)
