Welcome Mary! Wow, you read all the posts in this thread, that's impressive. We look forward to chatting more with you.
Katie wrote: "I also enjoy rereading the Sword of Truth series; they're enormous books, but it's nice to be able to tuck myself away for an entire day and just be somewhere else. Shame the television adaptation of it was so terrible. "Great series! There's a new one coming soon. I was so excited to find that out! Have you tried his new title? I believe it's going to be a new series, it's called The Law of Nines. I have it, but I haven't read it yet.
Oh and welcome to the group.
Welcome Mary too!
Hi everyone - I'm Leslie from Toronto. I am a writer, avid reader and blogger about books. My favourite "comfort read" is Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth. Ever since I first read this novel during my undergrad, I've found something surprisingly comforting in reading about the turbulent life of Lily Bart.... No matter how turbulent my own life might seem at times, Lily's always throws mine into perspective! My first book THE READING LIST: LITERATURE, LOVE AND BACK AGAIN - a memoir chronicling the novels that inspired me during a very dark period in my life - is being published shortly. Please drop by www.the-reading-list.com to find out more.
Hi Leslie; welcome to the group! I would never pick House of Mirth as a comfort read. Lily's life was sad, indeed. This gives me another perspective on the book.
Hi Leslie, Our co-mod and group creator, Lee, is close to Toronto. Welcome to the group. Hope you enjoy it.

I'm Candace and my comfort read is The Last Song. I refuse to see the movie after reading the book. I have many other books I enjoyed reading but this was what came to mind first.
Welcome, Candace! You will find many more comfort books here on the group threads. :)
Hi, Candace. Welcome to the group. I'm the same way with some books I love; I often have refused to see the movies.
I went to the book store today and really wanted to buy the new Kate Atkinson's book, "Stated Early, Took My Dog" but it was pretty expensive, so I just read a few pages of it there.Has anyone read it yet? It seems to be "pulling" me in already.
I like her style of writing and wondered if anyone here likes her also?
Mary Magoon, I am a huge fan of Kate Atkinson and am looking forward to Started Early, Took My Dog. I began it just before I left on vacation and now have to find what I did with it!
Hello all,My name is Don. I've only recently become a bit of a book-a-holic. That's why my book list isn't very long. A little over a year ago I rediscovered the joy of reading and now I can't get enough. My tastes vary. I'm not necessarily locked into any one genre. I think mostly I like interesting plot twists, likable characters and stories about good friends....comfort reads. I joined Goodreads hoping to get some new ideas on what to read next. This looks like a good place to start.

I've heard James Patterson is a really good author. I haven't read any YET but I'm getting ready to read Witch and Wizard.
Welcome to the group Don! I'm sure you will find a wide variety of comfort reads here. We have many threads, each devoted to a different genre and loads of great books on our shelves, all recommended by our members. Take a look around and dive in.
Hello Don! You've picked a great new hobby! Check out the group bookshelves for ideas. You'll get lots of great suggestions from the people here!
Don, Goodreads is great, and this group is wonderful. But someone should warn you. GR is a dangerous place. You're "bookshelves" will start growing by leaps and bounds. Welcome to the group!
Hello, Don. Welcome to the group. We do seem like a good fit for you as our "comfort reads" are all over the place in terms of genre of books.
Hi Don,I am new to this group also...
If you like mysteries, (and I do) Peter Robinson is good and so is Ruth Rendell.
A real "comfort" author of mine is Fannie Flagg. She's light and funny.

I started leafing through it at the local bookstore and it looks somewhat 'different" than her other books. Tell me what you think, ok?
Thanks...
hello! warning: fairly bad spelling.my name is abeer, and I am a huge fan of literature.
I hate snobs, I think we should all appreciate each others taste from twilight to Ulysses, to lord of the rings, or hard core sci-fi, like schils lader.
I find books to be such comforting loyal companions especially for introverts such as my self.
I am an aspiring writer/poet/biologist.
I would love to have a book discussion with someone some day.
also, I would say my comfort reads, and these books I have read over and freaken over, are sevreance by Robert Olen butler and pride and prejudice by jane austin.and p&p is such a common comfort read how ever it`s severance that I always read for it`s great language, deep emotions and just constant variety ( collection of short stories)

Hi Abeer,
I have never read Severance, but from what you say about it, now I am curious.. can you tell me more about it? Thanks...

Hi Don, and welcome. You might be interested in the short-story collection, ONCE UPON A DECADE: TALES OF THE FIFTIES. It was a finalist in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards, 2011. I have to admit that I'm the author.
Welcome to the group, Abeer.Welcome also, Clark. (though we do like it when members participate for a while before promoting their own books - Thanks!!! And we do have an author's corner folder. Just FYI.)
As Jeannette pointed out.Lee and I realize the Author's Corner folder isn't that easy to find.
ALL our folders are in alphabetical order, for everyone's information.
Just being helpful. Author's Corner shows up on the group page after Chit-Chat, btw.

Hello Don--If you like crime fiction, then the Icelandic author Arnuldur Indridason (I think that's the right spelling!) is really good. I read Jar City a few weeks ago, and it definitely had some good plot twists.
MaryMagoon wrote :"Hi Abeer,I have never read Severance, but from what you say about it, now I am curious.. can you tell me more about it? Thanks..."
I am glad your interested, well it revolves around the two scientific facts that after decapitation, a person could actually still think for a Minuit and a half, and that at the highest state of emotion one could speak at the speed rate of 140 words per min.
and so the author mixed these two facts by listing names of people from history (such as marry antuanite) and he would imagine what their last thoughts were.
its fantastic, hands down my favorite book.
Hi, my name is Jane and I love the idea of this group. I think we all go through phases when we need a comfort read. My favourites would be The Deans Watch by Elizabeth Goudge or any of her other titles. I have just read 3 of Jennifer Chiaverini's Elm Creek Quilters novels and I loved them too.
Hi, Jane. So glad that you found us! Welcome to the group. Thanks for already sharing some of your favorite comfort read books with us. You're sure to find good book ideas here; our members have very eclectic tastes for their comfort read books, so we have a lot of books/genres mentioned in the discussion threads and shelved on the group bookshelf.
Welcome Jane. I read The Dean's Watch many years ago and I don't think I still have it. But you made me want to read it again.
The Dean's Watch is set in Ely in the 1780s and is about the friendship between the Dean and Isaac the watchmaker. It is a beautiful story and you can lose yourself in the language. It draws you in from the first sentences the descriptions are just wonderful. If you read it please let me know what you think. I recently loaned it to a friend who had never heard of the author and after reading it she has borrowed my whole collection
Hello! My Name is Talitha and I love "comfort" reading! I think many of the books I love would fall under this category, but my favorites so far are; The Little House Series, My Life in France, Under the Tuscan Sun, The Secret Garden, and the Living Forest Series. Other books I truly and dearly love (but are not what I think of as "comforting") are Tuesdays With Morrie and The Help. I look forward to new book discoveries and relaxed conversations! Happy Reading to All!
Hello, Talitha. Welcome to the group! We have some great conversations here, yes, and our to-read shelves are in danger of growing very long. Glad you've joined us.
Hi Talitha, I'm not sure, of course, but I think the All Creatures, Great and Small books by the British veterinarian would fit into your comfort books.
Clark wrote: "Hi Talitha, I'm not sure, of course, but I think the All Creatures, Great and Small books by the British veterinarian would fit into your comfort books."I love those books, and the television series as well :-)
