Welcome Cathleen! You will find us a diverse group of readers so I'm sure you will discover some new favourites. I like mysteries too but haven't read any lately. I'll have to look up Gary Disher as I've never heard of him.

message 1152: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hello, Cathleen. Welcome to the group. I love mysteries too, but I'm behind with most of the series I used to follow because I've found too many other books to read from other members here at Goodreads and in this group, many of them in many genres are comfort reads.

message 1153: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahpinneo) Hi! I love the idea for this group. I have two kids, and live out in the country (yet near enough to a couple of fabulous bookstores and an awesome library.) I read *everything*. My "comfort books" are... let's see: anything by Alice Hoffman. Pride and Prejudice. Also House of Mirth, although it is a bit dark to truly come under "comfort." And lately I'm on a YA bender.

Hi Sarah, welcome to the group. The House of Mirth is one of my favourite books too although I agree it's not exactly a comfort read.

message 1155: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Welcome to the group, Sarah! I see you have eclectic taste. I do too, as do many members here, and just about every genre/book is a comfort for at least one of our members. You should fit right in!

message 1156: by Sonya (new)

Sonya Solomonovich | 1 comments Hi my name is Sonya. I love to read for comfort, and one of my fave comforting books is the Eddie Dickens series by Philip Ardagh Terrible Times (Eddie Dickens Trilogy, #3) by Philip Ardagh it's a children's series, but I think lots of adults will love it too.

message 1157: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Sonya! Welcome to the group. I love kids' books. Thanks for sharing one of your favorite comfort reads.

Maude | 479 comments A BIG welcome to all new members. I look forward to getting to know you. Sarah, what are the two "fabulous" bookstores? It is certainly nice to have them nearby.

message 1168: by Ginny (new)

Ginny (garbuckle) | 1 comments Hi, I have been a member for a while but did not really have time to write and introduce myself. I am an avid reader and love mystery novels. I just finished reading the 6 book series from P.B. Ryan with Nell Sweeney as the lead character. It was such a delight and I recommend reading all 6 books starting with book 1 and reading them in order. This is not a new series as book 1 was published in 2003 and the last one in 2007. I would love hearing from anyone who has read a series of books that they recommend, especially of the mystery genre.

message 1169: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments First, I want to recommend some awesome mysteries that are old but stand the test of time and, in my opinion, a lot better than some written today.
The Yellow Room,The Door, and The Album, all by Mary Roberts Rinehart - they are all stand alone but are terrific mysteries. Jennifer Rowe is good, too, from Australia. The Red Right Hand by Joel Townsley Rogers will having you turn on all the lights, Black Dog by Stephen Booth - it's a series, Kate Ross wrote literate cozies before she died young. I think there are three of them, and lastly for now, a stand alone book called Cache-Cache by Amy Marsland. Also, The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz, etc. When I get a minute I will give you some more modern recommendations but really, don't overlook the older ones - many are classic.

message 1170: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Here are a couple more -

Victorian London mysteries by Will Thomas
The Flavia de Luce mysteries by Alan Bradley
Historical Mysteries by Barbara Cleverly
Green for Danger, by Christianna Brand - a classic

Hi Ginny, welcome to the group. I just looked up the series you mentioned by P.B. Ryan and it looks quite interesting. We have quite a few mystery lovers here so I'm sure you'll find more books to your liking.

message 1172: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi Ginny, Welcome to the group. We have more than one mystery thread going. Feel free to jump in, or start a new one if the existing ones don't meet your needs. I love mysteries, but I'm way behind on most of the series I used to follow.

message 1173: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) Ginny wrote: "Hi, I have been a member for a while but did not really have time to write and introduce myself. I am an avid reader and love mystery novels. I just finished reading the 6 book series from P.B. Rya..."

Do you like mystery/comedy? If so, try the Lady Justice series by Robert Thornhill. There's only 3 so far, but the author says the 4th is at the publishers now. So hopefully it'll be out there soon.

message 1174: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) Oh I also had something catch my eye in the First Reads Giveaways, there's a series by Donna Andrews. I haven't personally read any yet, but it looks like interesting.

I have a thing for fun books, and I know some people prefer "real" mysteries, so sorry if that's not your thing.

message 1175: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kristi, There are actually 2 series I like by Donna Andrews. One is the bird series and one is the computer series. I think they start with Murder With Peacocks and You've Got Murder.

message 1176: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) Aha, I didn't know there was more than one. I just scoped her titles out a touch while waiting for my son at the library, but didn't have time and was trying to resist walking out with another book. (it's a problem I'm working on-feeling the need to walk out with one every visit).

message 1177: by [deleted user] (new)

Just one book? I usually take out a sack full every visit, especially when I was getting books for my daughter, too. Guilt-free book acquisition. :)

message 1178: by Rayna (new)

Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 13 comments That's an idea. If I leave the library every time with a huge tote bag full of books, I should grab one for someone else too. Then they aren't *all* for me. I think you're on to something Jeannette!

message 1179: by [deleted user] (new)

Whatever works, Rayna! :)

message 1180: by Felicia (new)

Felicia Rogers (feliciarogers) | 37 comments Have you guys tried the ebook lending program? Who knew a person could do ebooks from a library! I think that is wild.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Felicia wrote: "Have you guys tried the ebook lending program? Who knew a person could do ebooks from a library! I think that is wild."

I don't have an e-reader, though if I get one I hope to get mostly library books with it. My library does have quite a few Playaway books/all in one and lends out e-readers too. But so far I haven't tried it. I love the idea though.

Anne McDonald | 5 comments Lee wrote: "Please introduce yourself, share anything that hits your fancy but what we really want to know is your favourite comfort read! "

Thanks for the invite Lee!
Hi I'm Anne
I live in / on? the Prairies now and moved from Ont a dozen yrs ago. I love the fact that I've been exposed to more and more books and authors b/c of moving and travelling ... sort of like what GoodReads offers here with this diversity of offerings.
I loved A Wrinkle in Time mentioned here a few times and had never heard of Meet the Austins which I'll definitely check out now.
Comfort reads ... I love getting a sense of place and time in a book and am not keen on things going too dark. Great stories like Timothy Findley's The Piano Man's Daughter or Helen Humprey's The Lost Garden A Novel by Helen Humphreys The Piano Man's Daughter by Timothy Findley are what I really enjoy reading.

message 1183: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Anne. Welcome to the group.

Both A Wrinkle in Time and Meet the Austins (these covers/editions!!) are comfort reads for me. In some ways they're very different type of stories, but they have similarities too.

Hopefully members of this group will give you tons of ideas for comfort reads and I'm sure you'll do the same; you've already started. About to check out The Piano Man's Daughter.

message 1193: by K. (new)

K. (aoutranc3) Hello! My name is Katie and I'm terribly new to this group.

As far as comfort reads go, I'd have to say Where the Red Fern Grows is up there. I cry every single time, no matter where I am when I'm reading it.

I also enjoy rereading the Sword of Truth series; they're enormous books, but it's nice to be able to tuck myself away for an entire day and just be somewhere else. Shame the television adaptation of it was so terrible.

message 1199: by MaryMagoon (new)

MaryMagoon Kravulski (prettynails) | 12 comments Hi! I'm Mary from Texas and my sister Cathy has told me a LOT about how wonderful this book club is.
I like to read a lot and hope we can all share some good exchanges about our favorite "reads' and stories we love.
I love mysteries and one author I particularly enjoy is Debra Crombie.

message 1200: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Mary. Welcome to the group!

We're not exactly a book club. Unlike many Goodreads' groups we don't have monthly reads where we read the same books every month. We do have occasional buddy reads, but that's not the focus of the group. Basically, we each talk about our comfort read books (different for different members) and help each other find even more books to read. And we chat a lot. ;-)

Take a look around at our discussion threads, bookshelves, and polls. I hope you'll think we'll be a good fit for you.

It sounds as though it very well may be. We hope to get to know you and hear about some of your favorite comfort reads.
