Who I Am
By Martin Barthold
© 2010 Me, Myself & Martin Publications
Excerpted from ‘A Crying Pencil – Writing the Symphony of Love’ by Martin Barthold

I am a prisoner of my own belief;
I am in debt to myself.

I am a slave to my own conscience;
I carry my curse everywhere I go and I do damage to everything I touch.

I slice my throat with my own fingernails and watch the blood gush onto my stomach.

I am a Category-Five hurricane.
I destroy everything in my path – even, and especially, my own happiness.

I am a cold winter.
I freeze to death the leaf of Fall; I make it dry, I make it fall.

I’m scared of my own reflection.
I run from it when I see it; I’m confused by it yet certain of it at the same time.

I’m lost but, still, I know my way to Paradise.
I question myself but, still, I have all the answers.
And I even doubt myself while enjoying the confidence of a rock.

It’s not easy to be me but it sure feels good to be who I am.

message 962: by John (new)

John Hi, I'm John and I am new to this group but not to Goodreads. I chose this group because it was Canadian based, not too big and looked interesting. Today I dropped two groups. One was over 1100 members and was getting too big, too many posts. The other was dropping any members who hadn't posted anything. I thought that was a little heavy handed.

I have fairly eclectic tastes, reading some fiction, biography's, military history and auto racing. A few of us here in Victoria have our own Goodreads group. Now I'm looking forward to chatting with this group!

message 963: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi John! Welcome to the group. We are really not Canadian-based, even though there are a few Canadians here, including Lee, the co-mod. We're pretty laid back, and there are lots of book suggestions all the time.

Pop in to the threads and check out the bookshelves, too.

message 964: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi John,

Well, Lee, the creator of the group is Canadian, which is why the group is "Canadian" but we're really an international group; we have members from many places.

Welcome to the group! It sounds as though you'll fit in here very well.

Take a look at our discussion threads, bookshelves, polls, etc.

We are fine with lurkers here too. Members post when they want to and feel comfortable doing so. We do get busy here sometimes, but you can follow the threads that interest you and ignore the ones that don't. Hopefully, we will not be too overwhelming for you.

Hope you enjoy this group.

Hi John,

Welcome! It sounds like you have diverse interests like many of us. Jump in where you feel comfortable and as Lisa said, we don't mind lurkers if you don't feel like chatting.

Nancy | 7 comments What an inviting soothing name for a group. I'm conforted already. thank you. You've come up with a great description for what I so often try to describe to friends... a book you can just melt into, yes, in comfort. At first thought, my comfort reads are books with characters who are familiar. It is like 'coming home' or meeting up with old friends. yes, we all need comfort reads, at some points in our life, we need them more than at other times. I'm eager to get some new leads in that direction.

Hi Nancy, what a great description of what a comfort read is. You are going to love this group. Check out the bookshelves, and the different folders; I'm sure you will find new books for your to-read shelf.

thank you so much. I'm not very techie, so yes i hope i can find the shelves and folders you are referring to. I've already spotted one book I added to my 'to read' shelf! keep in touch.

message 980: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Nancy, I am one of the least techie persons I know, and I've managed reasonably well here. Just scroll down and click on any of the topics (children's books, fantasy, whatever). Often books will appear as a link, like this (alright, this is one of my favourites, shameless promotion, ha, ha, ha), The Lord of the Rings, and if you click on the title, it well bring you to the book's information page. Good luck finding books to read.

message 981: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group, Nancy! The best places to start are on the "What Are You Reading Now Thread" or "Chit-Chat" (Is that what it's called? It's where we chat about everything.) Give a holler anywhere and someone will give you a hand.

Nice book promotion, Gundula! :)

message 982: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Nancy. Welcome to the group! We're glad you've joined us.

Yes, great name, and I know that Lee took a lot of time with choosing the perfect name.

Feel free to ask for help finding things.

One way to explore is from the group's home page, when you first click on the Comfort Reads group.

From there you can scroll down and see many of our folders and their discussion threads.

Over on the right side near the top there is a link to our group bookshelf/shelves, and a link to fun polls, which stay open indefinitely so members can continue to vote.

We have some dedicated chat threads too.

And, you found this introduce yourself thread, so I will bet you'll be able to find your way around.

I hope that you have fun with us; we have a wonderfully nice bunch of people who participate here.

bob newton | 4 comments Hello,
my name is Bob, I live in Vancouver,Have just got myself an Ereader & in searching around found this site. liked the idea of this group so i joined! I enjoy Historical fiction and since my reader came with 1000 books I've got a lot to choose from, finished The Mayor of Castebridge (Thomas Hardy) and am reading Bleak House (dickens)

Hello and welome Bob! Goodreads is a wonderful place and there are lots of historical fiction and classics readers here in our little group of comfort readers. Let us know if you have any questions, we love to help.

message 986: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group, Bob! Like Lee said, this is a great group. I'm sure you'll find a few kindred spirits and probably a few (many) book suggestions!

message 987: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Bob. Welcome to the group. Vancouver is my favorite city. I think you've found a group where you will fit in well. I and many of our members love historical fiction books.

What ereader did you get? 1,000 books will keep you busy for quite a while! I've been tempted to get an ereader. My phone has a lot of books on it but I can't see reading a full length book on its tiny screen.

message 988: by bob (new)

bob newton | 4 comments Thk you all for the warm welcome.
I got a Pocketbook 902 Ereader. I did get 1000 books but i have to say that only 300+ are in English the others in a wide variety of languages
still getting used to the reader. I like it but never having owned one i have nothing to compare it against

message 989: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Bob, Still a lot of books and there are other free ebooks out there. Can you borrow books from your public library?

I'm considering getting a Nook because it has a format compatible with ebooks my library lends out. But, for now, I'll probably stick with paper books, hardcovers and paperbacks.

message 990: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi! I'm Shawn Lamb. Yes, I'm an author, but I sure like the name of this group "Comfort Reads"! :)

For writing I don't get a lot of time to read like I once did, but I have fall back books for when I do get a moment. I never get tired of reading Alistair MacLean. For cozy, old time mystery - Ellis Peters.

Oops, my age is showing. :)

message 991: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Shawn. Welcome to the group. Feel free to look around at our discussion threads and polls, and bookshelves. Comment and vote on anything that interests you, and feel free to share your comfort reads.

We have threads with books such as those by Alistair MacLean and Ellis Peters, and probably any other books you've considered comfort reads. Our members have very eclectic taste in what they consider comfort read books.

message 996: by Jasja (new)

Jasja | 19 comments Hello all! I was looking for groups with (some of) "my" books in it and thought I'd just be cheeky and join. I'm Jasja, born and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 38 years young (and even younger at heart O:) ) With my husband currently living 2 countries away, I'm doing a lot of comfort reading... Because I travel back and forth between here and France (got to see the hubby now and then), I got an ereader which is my new best friend. I looove not having to carry 20 odd books from station to station when I change trains in Paris. Anyway, I best not bore you all to pieces, so I will leave it at this for now.

message 997: by Susan (new)

Susan Hi Jasja, welcome! It must be so hard with your hubby two countries away! But you must get some great reading time huh?

message 998: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Hello and Welcome to Beth, Nancy, Shawn, Eclipse and Susan. Lots of great people here with all sorts of book recommendations and we look forward to yours.

message 999: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hello, Jasja. Welcome to the group! Take a look around and feel to post some of your favorite comfort books in the discussion threads, vote on our polls, and I hope you enjoy the group. We have so many friendly people here, so feel free to jump in when you want.

message 1000: by Jasja (new)

Jasja | 19 comments Thanks for the welcome :-) . It's definitely not the easiest to have my hubby 2 countries away, but it does leave me with a whole lot of reading time. And there must be some truth to the saying "absence makes the heart grow fonder"...haha. Counting the days till I see him again... May 28...
