Is the quality of the writing good?

message 852: by ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (last edited Sep 14, 2010 09:28AM) (new)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) It was good enough Lee, after awhile I forgot Rowling didn't write it! You get hooked quickly. The author has a very loyal following of folks who love the JP novels. In fact, he just posted that an administrative lead at NASA just requested he write a 4th book in the series. :)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi Kate. Glad to know your real name/a shorter name to greet you with. Welcome to the group! (I love the Harry Potter books!)

message 854: by Luna (new)

Luna (luna_lovegood) | 1 comments Hi this is Luna :). I am new to goodreads. I like reading medical thrillers, fantasies, suspense books. I am a huge Harry Potter and Robin Cook fan.

Thanks Kate for the James Potter tip, I am going to check them out.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi Luna, Welcome to the group, and to Goodreads. I love the Harry Potter books, as do quite a few of our members, and I've enjoyed quite a few of Robin Cook's books too.

Hi Luna, welcome to Comfort Reads. I'm a fan of thrillers, suspense and fantasy myself although I haven't read a good thriller in a long time.

I just saw this, and don't know if it was answered, but I thought I'd chime in (a month late). This is an Ann Brashares book, and it's the first in a trilogy. I have a review on my blog page. I really liked it!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Christine, Must have been from a while back; I can't find it, but thank you. Do you know the title of the book? I"m assuming perhaps that it should be shelved???

message 859: by [deleted user] (new)

It's My Name Is Memory and the post was at the end of August.

message 860: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't know if I would call it a comfort read, but someone else may. It was good though.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi, Sarah. Welcome to the group!

Take a look at our discussion threads and our shelves and perhaps you can get some ideas. Also, feel free to participate in any discussion or use the genre or just to chat threads to ask for specific ideas. Our membership has a very eclectic bunch of comfort reads, and I suspect you'll find plenty of ideas for books to read.

Maude | 479 comments Welcome Sarah! We are almost at ends of the country. I am from Idaho. What are some of your favorite books?

message 870: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Sarah, I live in Boise which is a great city and home of the Boise Bronco's (if you follow football). We do have beautiful blue skies, and lots of open space out of the city. We have a greenbelt along the river, wide open spaces out of the city, lots of rivers, etc. It is a nice place to live. My grandson is standing behind me waiting to use my computer before he goes home so I will talk books with you later!

Sarah, I must be getting tired. For one second I thought that the books you were quoting were Idaho landmarks, but then I realised they were books. Time to take a nap.

Elisabeth (elisabethjoy) | 1 comments Hello, Group! My name is Elisabeth, and I definitely read for comfort! I live in Milwaukie, Oregon, and I am a mother of one, who has just moved out into his own apartment and started college. My house is crammed with books, even though I just gave away boxes of them! But there is one bookcase that contains the books I pick up when I am unhappy, tired or just in need of distraction. These are Islandia by Austin Tappen Wright, mysteries by Georgette Heyer, anything by Patrick O'Brian, Rex Stout, Jane Austen, Tim Powers and Patricia Wentworth! And various others, like Good Omens by Gaiman and Pratchett, The Secret History by Donna Tartt, Scarface by Andre Norton, and quite a few others. I just slipped my Philip Pullmans in there last week.

But! I also read pretty much everything that comes my way except romance. Never could get interested in those!

Phillip Duck (PhillipThomasDuck) Hi everyone! Phillip Thomas Duck here, just checking out what Goodreads has to offer. I like what I see so far. My comfort reads are mostly mystery and crime novels. James Lee Burke, Lee Child, John Sandford, and many more. As much as I am a reader, I also have a passion for writing, and have published several novels traditionally, as well as my latest as an ebook.

Patricia Sands (patriciasands) | 7 comments Hi - I am just finding my way around Goodreads and have really enjoyed the posts and reviews on this site. One of my favourite comfort read authors is Janet Evanovich - no-brainer stories with characters that make you laugh over and over again. Ms. Evanovich has found a great writing formula and uses it effectively to keep her fans loyal and entertained (would that be 'loyally entertained'?) ...
Happy Thanksgiving to all you other Canadian group members!
Patricia

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi Patricia, Welcome to the group! I'm glad that you found us, and found Goodreads. It can be a very addictive fun site.

message 882: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Sands (patriciasands) | 7 comments Thanks for the welcome Lisa! It looks like a fun (and addictive) site - especially for those of us who are joined at the hip to our computers. Turkey is taking over my life for the next few hours though - gotta baste right now! Can't wait for dinner! Thanksgiving is my very favourite holiday because the only present necessary is the gift of words. Food, family, friends and a whole lot for which to be thankful. Count your blessings everyone!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Patricia, Are you Canadian?

Happy Thanksgiving weekend to all our Canadian members. And, do other countries also celebrate Thanksgiving tomorrow?

message 885: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Sands (patriciasands) | 7 comments Thanks Brenda and Lisa! I am Canadian and live in Toronto most of the year. To make things perfect we are enjoying absolutely beautiful fall weather here this weekend. A good book at the end of the day will be like the whipped cream on the pumpkin pie.

Erntedankfest (being thankful for the harvest) is celebrated in Germany, but I think it was last weekend. My MIL never made a special meal that I can remember, and certainly not a turkey. I think there is a special church service with a blessing, too.

message 887: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments You had me scared there for a minute. I thought I had missed Thanksgiving! I didn't realize you have a different Thanksgiving - is it based on finding a home in Canada? Our's (USA) is the third Thursday of November which celebrates the first thanks given by the Pilgrims.

message 888: by [deleted user] (new)

You've got plenty of time, Maude! :)

message 889: by Joy (new)

Joy | 314 comments I never knew Canada had a Thanksgiving Day. Do they have turkey dinners too? :)

message 890: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) The U.S. Thanksgiving is the 3rd Thursday in November; the Canadian's is the 2nd Monday in October. My Canadian friends do seem to celebrate in a similar way. They get a 3 day weekend though!!! ;-)

message 891: by [deleted user] (new)

In the US, some of us get a 4-day weekend! My husband always does. :)

message 892: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette wrote: "In the US, some of us get a 4-day weekend! My husband always does. :)"

Yes, I know many people who do also, but I know just as many people who either have to work Friday or have to be one of the people who are allowed to take a vacation day Friday.

message 893: by [deleted user] (new)

It's a nice perk of his job: 2 days for Thanksgiving, 2 at Christmas and 2 for New Year's Day.

That's very nice! All jobs should have that, except for 24/7 type jobs, of course. But even then, workers should get turns for those types of days off.

Hi Patricia and welcome to the group. I'm glad you're enjoying Thanksgiving weekend. I'm not far from you, we just moved from Toronto to Hamilton. Our family spent the day on my mother's farm. We brought home a pumpkin and enjoyed some beautiful weather.

In Southern Germany where my mother is from (close to the Swiss border), many of the churches are decorated with the fruits of the harvest for "Erntedankfest" and then the harvest is blessed by the local priests and/or pastors; the decorations are often quite lovely.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone celebrating today.

message 897: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I think the reason our Thanksgiving is earlier is because our growing season is later, as we are farther north than the USA. But, you know, I am not even sure if Canadian Thanksgiving and American Thanksgiving always were at different times. I have read some of Lucy Maud Montgomery's Thanksgiving stories, and most of them seem to take place in November (so, maybe Canada having its Thanksgiving in October is a relatively recent event, just mulling the idea, now I should mull some cider).

message 898: by [deleted user] (new)

Enjoy the mulled cider and the feast everyone in Canada! Welcome back to the threads, Lee! :)

Darkpool | 222 comments What on earth did we do before wikipedia?
"Thanksgiving in Canada did not have a fixed date until the late 19th century, when it was typically held on November 6th. After the end of World War I, Thanksgiving Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies were usually held during the same week. To avoid the two holidays from clashing with one another, in 1957 the Canadian Parliament proclaimed Thanksgiving to be observed on its present date."

Thanks for the information, I should have looked that up myself, but I didn't even think of doing that.
