Yay! We're irresistible, I love that!!!
Welcome Beth and Barbara!

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Lee, yes you are :) As of this moment, I have a sink full of dirty dishes and the Sunday paper to get to and, yet here I am :/.

Ah Mona, that's very sweet of you to say. It's not me though, it's everyone (you included)! My house is a disaster too if it's any comfort.

message 654: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Lee, It's true:) I really should not hog the "puter"(my daughter's word for our laptop) because she's waiting to use it. But every time I try to get off, a new post pops up and...

message 655: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Oh, I don't mind leaving my apartment a mess while I'm in this group. Being here instead of reading though, when I'm so behind with all my books, is getting annoying. ;-) But, here I am. Addictive group!

message 656: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Yes, Lisa, I have the same problem. I have books that I reserved at the library that I can't renew because of waiting lists. I should really be reading those instead of being on here. Yet...

Also my daughter is here waiting so I guess I should go. Besides, the place starts to smell nasty if I don't get to the dishes.

message 657: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Hi and Bye Mona, I didn't get on until now. Have a good day!

message 658: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Maude, I just kinda get on and off in intervals.

Reluctantly, I got off earlier to attack the sink full of dishes.

The munchkin was hungry and I played with her for a while and I'm back on. Soon, I'll be getting off for the night to put away groceries, have dinner, and the usual evening routine.

Maude | 479 comments Hello, Debbie, Beth and Barbara and Welcome! My son is all grown up but I have two grandsons and absolutely love dogs.

message 661: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to all newbies! My life has been hijacked by my daughter's swim team so I haven't been here as much. But I did want to pop in and say hi to the newcomers.

message 662: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Beth, how about foodie movies?

message 663: by Rayna (new)

Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 13 comments Hi Beth! Welcome!
I enjoy food-related reads too, but they always make me so hungry!
Have you read Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise? It's definitely a good foodie read.

message 664: by Rayna (new)

Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 13 comments Beth, I'm usually a big believer that the book is better than the movie, but in the case of Julie and Julia I much preferred the movie.

message 665: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Beth! It's nice to see you here! (You gave me my first smile today)

message 666: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Beth, I'm not sure that IT'S COMPLICATED can be classified as a "foodie" movie just because Meryl Streep's character owned a bakery/cafe. But I did enjoy it. I have not read many foodie books except Serving Crazy With Curry. I have a couple on my to-read list.

Fiona: I have the same problem. GR is taking away from my reading time.

Rayna: I have yet to see Julie & Julia. Yes, most of the time the book is better than the movie. But I've seen The Devil Wears Prada and read somewhere in one of the posts that the movie is better than the book.

Beth,

Welcome to Comfort Reads! I love you already for the food! I too love reading foodie fiction and non-fiction. We do have a few food threads going here so feel free to check them out and share your favourites there. I personally will be scouring your bookshelves at the first opportunity. Woohoo!

message 668: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Welcome to the group. Beth. We do have a food shelf, but I’m sure many books that belong on it are missing. We’ll add them to the shelf as we find them.

message 669: by [deleted user] (new)

It's actually pretty easy, Beth, trust me. You'll catch on. :)

message 670: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Beth,

To find our books, go to the top right of the group page(s) and click on "bookshelf" then scroll down. The shelves are in alphabetical order. Books can be on as many shelves as apply, but many are not, yet anyway.

Also, feel free to click on "polls" and vote and comment.

And check out all our discussion threads. You can do that from the group's home page or click on the "discussions" link.

There are so many helpful members here so free to ask whatever questions you'd like, both about this group and about Goodreads in general.

Diane Hello, I'm Diane. I saw the title of your group and thought, "that' my kind of group." World War II books fascinate me but I don't consider them comfort reads. I generally will read a war book or history book or 2 and then I have to clear my brain with a "comfort read." I'm looking forward to seeing some recommendations from the group.

Diane Joy wrote: "Hello, I'm Joy and my friend Merry invited me to join this group. We both have Christmasy names :) I also love To Kill a Mockingbird but I also enjoy the Shopaholic series. My favorite book from hi..."

I also love A Separate Peace. I don't even know why but it is one of my favorites. Maybe it comes from growing up across the street from a prep school. I read it in High School, also, and it stuck with me.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Hi Diane :)

message 677: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Welcome, Diane, I am a big World War II buff, too, both fiction and nonfiction. It's not the battles, but how people survived, what they did in the war, the stories they have to tell, which interest me. I have some favority WW I books as well. I have to go to the library (where else!) now but I'll give you some of favorite titles later.

message 678: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Maude, My last trip to the library on Tuesday was kind of a dud. No good impromptu picks :(. Well I'll be headed back on Saturday.

When I went there last, I noticed some people's homes just behind the library. I'm so envious. I'd be there everyday if I lived so close.

message 679: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Oh, wouldn't that be great Mona. Just run out the back door to the library, never be late with your books again (forever fine free), maybe we could just put a bed in the back!

message 680: by Mona (last edited Jun 18, 2010 11:32AM) (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Maude, I'd be over there every day checking out the shelving carts.

I told hubby a fantasy of mine was to live that close to a library. Not quite as fun a fantasy as most, I suppose ;).

Yes, another pro would definitely be no overdue fines. I'm constantly calculating when I absolutely have to return stuff. Between hubby, my daughter, and I, we always have tons of stuff checked out and what with the grace periods(which we fully take advantage of, much to the chagrin of patrons waiting for the item), it can get confusing. Making calculations when we're going on a trip is the worst.

Hubby despises late fines--it's a pet peeve of his. He thinks it's just careless. As if he's so perfect >:/.

How about having living quarters over or attached to the library in some way, that would be a perfect second residence for me like a secret hideout.

Our library system here has several days during the year when they are closed due to budget cuts. Today is one of those days. In the past, the website would be down too and that was annoying.

message 681: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Mine's bugged by the fines too. He says the library has my picture on their circ desk wall lol.

message 682: by Mona (last edited Jun 18, 2010 11:43AM) (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Laura: Since we moved here to our current residence about a year ago, I have not had a single fine. My stuff is always overdue but I return it within the grace period.

Laura, maybe you're the reason the library has the funds to add to its collections :). The library system and your fellow patrons love people like you.

When we first moved in here(we're tenants), we asked both the previous tenants as well as the landlord where the closest public library was and just got puzzled expressions and indefinite answers. Obviously, not patrons of the library system.

Maude | 479 comments Oh Mona and Laura - those were very funny posts - I was actually laughing out loud! Aren't book people the most wonderful people in the world?

message 684: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Laura: Maybe they should come up with a new show "THE LIBRARIES' MOST WANTED."

Maude: Thanks:). Yes, we book people are AWESOME. I love it here on GR. I've been trying to get off now to get some stuff done like, maybe, eat, get some laundry done, etc. I fed the munchkin but have not had anything myself except for a couple bites of leftover cheesecake.

But then up pop some more posts and... Once you get behind on here, it's tough to catch up.

I wasn't on here that much yesterday because munchkin was in her let's-hound-mommy-endlessly-and-not-let-her-have-a-moment-of-peace mode. Besides that, I was trying to get a marker stain out of hubby's white pants. It was on the seat of his pants and he got it when he sat on some of my daughter's uncapped markers that she left on the couch. He went to several meetings with blue&green marker splotches until somebody pointed it out to him. I told him "look on the bright side,at least it wasn't a brown marker-that would have looked worse, right." :D

message 685: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments There you go again, Mona! Making me laugh!!! I'm trying to reorganize my "book room" and I keep popping back in here to see what's going on! Mmmmm...cheesecake - not a bad lunch. Did your husband laugh?

message 686: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Maude: He called me from the bathroom at work after checking out the stains. He's always doing that--calling me while he's walking from one place to the next,on the hands-free while driving, while chowing down in the lounge. It's like calling me is an efficient use of time, multi-tasking.

I think he was a little embarrassed but agreed that it would be a good story. When you have kids, there's always good stories. Hubby does have a great sense of humor and is known for it.

I also said people would probably understand, knowing he has a small child and all. He said that people who attend those meetings are usually out of the small children phase. I told him that they were probably there at some point. Anyway, I don't understand why nobody told him. I would have.

Hubby is very active and visible in his professional life unlike his personal life where he is asocial and tends to avoid social engagements like the plague.

I think it's time for a proper lunch -- egg salad is on the menu for today. Well, not really salad, more like chopped up boiled egg on bread. But there is half of a 5lb chocolate fudge fantasy layer cake in the frig. Hubby bought it for my daughter's 5th b-day last Sunday.

Laura, you crack me up! I'm sitting at my patio table with my laptop reading all the comments and when I got to this one I just started laughing out loud. Jacob looked at me like I'm nuts.

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Mona, how fortunate you have a grace period for overdue materials. I've never heard of such a system.

message 689: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 55 comments You guys are too funny! I like the idea of Library's Most wanted. I'm afraid I would be on that one! I used to be really good about returning stuff on time but I've been kind of careless lately.

Your poor hubby! What did he say about the marker stains and yes, good thing it wasn't a brown marker. Can you imagine him trying to explain that to his coworkers?

message 690: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Lee, your library system doesn't have a grace period?!

Ours here in Tampa has a verrry generous 7-day grace period. Of course, the downside to this is the wait is longer for materials you reserve. Also, if you return movies in the bookdrop after closing, they will be treated as being returned the last day that library was open.

When I lived in Wisconsin, new movies were on 3-day loan w/no grace period. The grace period for other materials was 3 days.

message 691: by Lee, Mod Mama (new)

Lee (leekat) | 3959 comments Mod
Wow, that's neat! I've really never heard of a library having a grace period for overdue materials. None of the library systems I've used in Canada have them. It sure would save me a lot of money. Even being able to check our accounts online doesn't seem to help we have so many items out. It's my daughter's videos which usually get us into trouble.

message 692: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Beth, about the marker stains, he said not to say anything to the munchkin about it and that he would talk to her. He thinks I'm too hard on her. But she treats me better than she treats him. She's desensitized to me but daddy's not allowed to scold her and she gets upset when he does.

Yesterday, when I was trying to get the stains out and finally practically gave up for the day, she says "mama have you tried everything?" I just looked at her.

He is such a marshmellow about her and she's got him so tightly wrapped.

Ohhh, it would have been way more embarrassing if it was a brown marker. I am so glad it didn't come to that. I wonder if he would have been so forgiving of our daughter in that case.

There was an incident on the plane where she dropped a "favorite" marble on the floor and hubby was trying to stop it with his foot. She accused him of kicking it and was irate. So there he is crawling up and down the aisle looking under the seats for it after the "fasten seat belt" sign was turned on. People were asking what he was looking for, thinking it was maybe a gem that fell out of a ring and laughed when they found out the truth. A crew member came and asked him if there was a problem. I thought we would get kicked off the plane. The marble was found upon landing.

message 693: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments I don't think we have a grace period in Idaho. I used to live in California and we didn't have a grace period there either. I am sure that I used to help support the libraries as I was always forgetting books.

message 694: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Lee, I am the designated library person in our household and have custody of the cards(even my 5-yr-old has her own card:) ). I put the holds on and pick up materials. Hubby returns them if I won't be able to get to the library that day. But I do get blamed if my calculations are off and there's a fine -- hasn't happened yet.

message 695: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Maude: Looks like you may be featured on the newest show, LIBRARIES' MOST WANTED :).

I think TV needs to have a Book Network and the show could be aired on that channel. They have networks for everything else under the sun.

message 696: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) My library has no grace period: books 21 days, DVDs and CDs 7 days, can be renewed 3 times (must request renewal before the due date) if no holds. On the other hand, for books from within my city's library, there are no overdue fines at all for children's books. All other books are 10 cents a day; DVDs & CDs are $1. a day. And, books from inter-library loan (including children's books) are $1. a day and $115 for a lost book. Eek! Sometimes I have a dozen inter-library loan books out at a time and I'm so afraid something will happen to them. I haven't had an overdue book for years.

message 697: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 55 comments Our library doesn't have a grace period, either :-(

Diane Maude wrote: "Welcome, Diane, I am a big World War II buff, too, both fiction and nonfiction. It's not the battles, but how people survived, what they did in the war, the stories they have to tell, which inter..."

Same here--not as interested in the stategies and battles as the survival stories. I have to favorites:We Die Alone: A WWII Epic of Escape and Endurance and:The Simple Sounds of Freedom : The True Story of the Only Soldier to Fight for Both America and the Soviet Union in World War II You couldn't write fiction that interesting.

message 700: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments I just recently reread We Die Alone - I am still awed by what people can endure. I have never heard of The Simple Sounds of Freedom and will definitely look it up. I also own and read Jewish survival stories - it's almost beyond belief what some of them had to do to stay alive - and for years!
