Donnajo | 4355 comments I decided to start a thread for DL reads. Not sure if this is where it would go so just guessed.
I finished 3 DL reads from my list in 2009 Sixpense House, Red Leaves and Beachcoming for a shipwreck God.
I decided to take two books off the list this year Within Arm's Reach (just moving off the pile and back on the shelve) and One Heart (which I'm getting rid of tried it and decided not to continue). My new list for 2010 is:

1. Astrid & Veronika by Linda Olsson (currently reading it) (READ)
2. Cottage for Sale, Must be Moved by Kate Whouley

4. Dreaming Water by Gail Tsukiyama
5. High Tide at Noon by Elizabeth Ogilvie (started and to side)
6. The Lobster Chronicles by Linda Greenlaw
7. In the Woods by Tama French
8. Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink PH.D
9. the Quilter's Apprentice by Jennifer Chiaverini
10 Little Altars everywhere by Rebecca Wells
11. Swan by Frances Mayes
12. Educatin Alice by Alice Steinbach
13. New Moon by Stephanie Meyer
14. Marley & Me by John Grogan
15. The Island by Victoria Hislop
16. The No. 1 Ladies Dectective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith

Teresa (teresainohio) My DL list is to get current with the many series I start or say goodbye to them.

message 3: by Susie (new)

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 1798 comments I definitely agree with Teresa! I'd like to finish some series that are "dead"...just so I can get them off my list. Hmmmm...where to start?

message 4: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments I don't making DL lists. Makes me feel like reading the books is a chore rather than an escape! I have made a resolution to not bring a book home unless I KNOW I'll read it!

Ms. O'Cat will like your list of seventeen!!
I had hoped we might hear from her like last 31-Dec with the MT Birthday list.
You have some good ones on your list, especially In the Woods (I loved it!) New Moon (ok, it is a lot of teenage angst, but a really good book and you have to read it so you can go on with the series!) and What's A Girl Gotta Do (light fun!)

message 7: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16989 comments My usual determination list has varied from reading some of the many Stephen King books I had collected and never read, to reading more of my own books. This year I am not sure yet. I have done a pretty good job of catching up on Stephen King, and with my Kindle and the low quantity of library copies available for new releases perhaps I will read more of my own books this year.
There are several books I keep meaning to finish that I started so perhaps I will list those for when the moment comes and I am in the mood. Wicked, The Pillars of the Earth

message 8: by Carol/Bonadie (last edited Jan 03, 2010 07:48PM) (new)

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9514 comments Hmm. I usually like doing a Determination List. I would never have read
A Tale of Two Cities otherwise and that is on my top ten books of all time. Truth be told, though, I typically forget about it by midyear, after having read a couple on the list. Last year I read another of Dickens',
Great Expectations. I'm tempted to take a page from Ann's book and make it a goal to alternate borrowed book with a book from my own library. I have SO many unread books, including books from the first Bcon I attended!

Shomeret | 1495 comments Re A Tale of Two Cities--Carol, did you see the musical version of A Tale of Two Cities on PBS? I saw it last night and thought it was awesome!

message 10: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4355 comments Mel, I'm like you in the past I thought it was more chore or homework as I used to call it. But for some weird reason I'm thinking it's like a tradition to do it even if I don't end up getting to them. Look at 2009 I really thought I picked books that I would read but when I see those books sitting on my rocking chair taking up room when I look for my next read I think ugh don't think so. That is why this year when I decided on books I went though each book and read a page or two to decide yes or no. The Elizabeth Oglivie book that I'm determined to get though that series even if It's only the first book. Because I bought a few of my books at my favorite store at the shore because it was the owner's favorite series and said it was so good. It's the only books she had.
I had started the book and I do pick it up at times so I hope this year I finally finish reading it.

message 11: by Susie (new)

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 1798 comments I have decided not to keep putting the books back on the shelf if I can't get interested in them. I usually end up picking them up more than once and putting them back. I need to just move on if I don't like them....

message 12: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4355 comments The book I put back on the shelve I will read one day and probably just keep it because it's the one by a old friend from needlepoint's daughter. I was never able to get it signed but I still would want to read it and keep it if I ever got the chance. I haven't seen her mom in a few years so don't know how she's doing or if any other books came out after the first one. I know she was working on one. And I know she got married. That is the last I saw the mom sometime right after the daughter got married.

I have never made DL lists, but there are books that I feel I ought to read like the Avalon book I'm reading now because the author is a friend and it's expected of me. It's not that I don't enjoy reading her books. I do, but I might not prioritize this one as the first of 2010 if she weren't also a friend.

message 16: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16989 comments One of my current library books is Dear Mrs. Roosevelt: Letters to Eleanor Roosevelt Through Depression and War.
I need more time than I have to read it, and I find the style of it makes it harder to read without the flow of a narrative. It is presented in the style of various letters written to the First Lady.
As sort of a 'Determination List' of books to read I am often drawn to history or classics or biographies at the library and take them home to read between my favorite MT books or other fiction. I wish I had more time for this one.

message 17: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4355 comments I'm not into history type book but Ann, that sounds like something different that I would probably like to read.

message 18: by Ann (last edited Jan 17, 2010 10:54AM) (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16989 comments DonnaJo:
Cathy D. Knepper's book Dear Mrs. Roosevelt: Letters to Eleanor Roosevelt Through Depression and War is broken into four parts, The Great Depression, The New Deal, The War Years and The Home Front. skipping around reading letters shows how much the issues of today are similar.
I am struck by the value of the record that these letters and the First lady's responses in her "My Day" column and other letters indicating actions taken at her request to respond to the issues represent.

Dan in AZ | 2960 comments Hey, Lorraine, looks like a neat site. Thanks.

message 21: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4355 comments Looks like a good site I bookmarked it. I remember the days I used to say I put it in my favorite things now I bookmark things. Still figuring out things along the way. Went to my first 1 to 1 since October today at the closer apple store to me and it was better somewhat. Not as mobbed at the other apple store. I don't think there was more than 10 people at a time in there and the other place would have alot more and that was customers. Next week I have to be there for 8 am I'm not sure about that time in the morning for this time of year. I still might change it again.

OMalleycat | 1448 comments Gosh, Donnajo, what a beautiful Determination List. Just the right size and all. :-)

You'll love Into the Woods. I did and I'm so happy to see in one of Gail's upcoming release lists that Tana French has a new one coming later this year.

Jan O'Cat

Ann (annrumsey) | 16989 comments Ahh, two things to make our Ms. O'SeventeenCat happy! I too am thrilled we get a new Tana French book!

message 27: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4355 comments the only other thing that she would have loved to see is a reissue of TKAM but sorry that isn't happening here anything soon. I decided with the 17 books I would give a DL list one more year. I've been thinking of pulling one off to read soon. I only have 1 finished so far so need to keep the pace going.

message 28: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4355 comments How is everyone's determination read list going? I have at least one of my DL books on my nook besides on the DL rocking chair. The #1 ladies Detective agency. It was a free book that came with the nook when I bought it. Or it could have been one of those coupons for a free book too. I forgot which it was. I pulled out In the woods last night thinking of starting that one but decide to hold off because I'm not ready yet to only read one book again. And with that book I think I would need to do that. Maybe next week.

Good Luck with your determination list!
Since I really didn't do a new determination list this year I can dust off my old one and "get caught up with the Stephen King books in my tbr piles". Progress so far - I am still working on reading Under the Dome. Good, but easy to put down too. ;)

message 30: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4355 comments i'm thinking this might my last year to do a DL. I think today is the day I take a book off of it and start reading one.

message 32: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4355 comments I'm not sure there is anything fun. But I think it might be interesting the story about the girl that has a Coyote. Or maybe the second twilight book. But with Vamps that might be too much like Passage.

message 33: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16989 comments DJ:
Not much like The Passage! Very different Vamps! LOL.
