no worries. i have lined up a couple others for the other tasks. i had lots of fun trying to find books on my 2011 tbr challenge shelf to fit in as many tasks as i thought i could read before the end.

The main character gives up his 'job' at the end of the book to start a different life, chosen by himself.
Another almsot main character gets a second change after being thought she was dead, to becoming a threat, to being offered a new life.
A girl being introduced towards te end of the story gets a completely new kind of life.
They all seem to get a new life or a second change.
20.2 In honor of New Year’s pick a book in which one of the characters is given a new beginning or a second chance
Yes, it would count, but didn't you read that book prior to the start of this challenge? If so, then it wouldn't be eligible.

for the task author's first book. I found below on wikipedia:
In 2004, Nicoll published a biography of the Mahdi of Sudan, The Sword of the Prophet:The Mahdi of Sudan and the Death of General Gordon. His second book, a biography of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, was published by Haus Publishing in April 2009 as Shah Jahan: The Rise and Fall of the Mughal Emperor. Penguin-India (under the Viking imprint) published the same volume in September 2009. Returning to Sudan studies, Nicoll published An Index to the Complete Works of al-Imam al-Mahdi in June 2009. The Abd-al-Karim Mirghani Cultural Centre in Omdurman followed this with the publication of an Arabic translation of The Mahdi of Sudan in October 2009, under the title Seif al-Nabi: Mahdi al-Sudan. In September 2010, the Qasim Data Centre in Khartoum published Nicoll's Bibliography of the Mahdia. Nicoll is currently working on a comprehensive account of the siege of Khartoum in 1884-5, based on unexpurgated editions of the Khartoum journals of Colonel J. Donald Hammill-Stewart (January-April 1884) and General Charles Gordon (September-December 1884), in the doctoral research programme at Reading University

No - it would have to be an award like from this list, not simply a compilation of recommended reading. :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...

Will you be running a different challenge after this one is over at the end of February? If so, any idea how long that will run?
Thank you!
Yes, there will be another challenge after this one - probably another 2 monther. :) But you can join this one if you like, there's no requirement to complete it. You can read as much or as little as you choose.

But I must read the categories stated in the rules and within the time period, if I participate, correct?

The GR page for the book will usually have that info where it lists the setting, characters, ISBN, etc.

What are you reading Jeane?"
was thinking about all my books ebcause I want to change points as I won't finish all the tasks, so better put them on the bigger points if possible.

Forgot about that, thanks!

It'll start on the 1st of October. We got a little sidetracked and so we're trying to get it put together ASAP.

Two questions about the January challenge.
Can I count a book if I started it in December, but didn't finish it till Jan?
For the 2 points if recommended by another HF member. Does "recommended" mean we received a personal recommendation via message, or that we noticed a book had been given a good review by a HF member?
Thank you!
Holly
No, books must be started along with the challenge to count, so anything started before Jan 1 will not be counted.
We used to allow carryover, but it got hard to verify whether it was less than 1/2 read... so we changed the rule.

For recommendations, it does need to be a recommendation made to you, specifically, but it doesn't need to be through the recommendations feature or anything. If someone in a thread says, "Holly, I think you'd like Book A, you should read it!" that will count.
Feel free to ask for recs, set up a thread, whatever you like. ;)
