Reading Resolutions

Or, rather than saying buy less, I should say that I want to buy books that I know I like and want to keep, rather than unread books that I'm not sure that I'll like.

Me, too, though I think it'll take me more than a year to accomplish this. :)
Other resolutions for this year: don't get more books from the library until you've read what you have now.
Then read books you own.
Then start completing your collection with missing books from your favourite authors.
I guess those are strict enough for this year if I can keep them :)

I want to read at least 1 book by a person of color per month. I kind of had this vaguely as a goal this past year, but without any set numbers, and I didn't do as well as I would have liked with it.
I want to exercise some self-control when I go to the library and not get out so many books. I've been tending to get so many books out that I don't have time to read any of the books that I own.
I want to be a little more focused in my reading this year. Last year, I read a lot of different things and tried a lot of new authors, and it was great fun, but I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed by all the series that I've started and want to read more of, but keep passing over for starting a new series.
Finally, I'd like to continue reading classics. I want to finish War and Peace and Ulysses and maybe start some other big projects.
(Also, completely unrealistically, I'd really love to finish one of the Seasonal Challenges, but I know that's never going to happen, so I'm trying not to think about that one too hard. :D)

I also want to read more of my books on my shelf before acquiring new ones. I am still playing with numbers but I think 3 books before I can buy one, especially since I am overflowing again... Sigh.

I hope to exercise more self control at the book store. Getting gift cards for xmas doesn't help that either...
Also since I am moving (monday) I will be reorganizing my books by author's last name. With Read and Unread shelves as well.

Hey, I want to finish In Search of Lost Time this summer too. Maybe, we'll be able discuss ideas/opinions and make reading more interesting?
I want to read over 200 books and finish one seasonal challenge (probably the summer one). I also want to read more books in foreign languages, especially French, since for me reading is the best way to learn a language. More 500+ pages books too.

Well, I own The Woman in White, Frankenstein, Dracula, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, A Christmas Carol, Les Miserables, and all of Jane Austen's novels. So, most likely one of those.

My biggest resolution is to read what I have on my shelves at home .I have a little bit of everything.Classic,mystery,poetry........I won'T do any lists because I know I won't follow it.My choices usually go with my feelings and also with the season.
My goal is to read about 40 books.I would like to read a little bit of everything.I divided my reading goals in 5 categories:
1. biography
2. suspense and mystery
3. classics written by british or english author(english is my second language and I have a big pile
to get to get through)
4. book written in French by french or canadian writer.
5. good fiction books written in 2009.The Help,Netherland,The Museum of Innocence by Orhan Pamuk,The Year of Flood by Margaret Atwood........
I began 2010 by reading The Museum of Innocence by Orhan Pamuk

Any book you recommend more than the other?

I think I will focus more on pages read as well. I doubled my 2009 goal of 100 books, so I'm not really concerned with quantity this year. I have a number of long books that I'm dying to read.
I want at least half of the books I read in 2010 to be on the 1001 list.
I need to read books I already own first and use the library mainly for new releases.
I'm trying to limit the books I buy to only those that are already on my TBR.
I would like to read as much of the works of John Irving and Charles Dickens as possible (both became favorite authors of mine this past year).
I'm going to try and review every book I read, even if it's only a sentence or two. I tend to get reviewer's stage fright; I feel like anything I write will be inadequate. But I always appreciate the reviews others leave, so I'm going to try and do the same.
Last but not least, I would like to read at least one of the group reads per month and participate in the discussions.

My 2009 goal was to read 100 books in the year, and I finished with 102! I'm so happy I made it! But knowing that I barely made it, plus the knowledge that that was with reading during every single second of spare time I had during the summer, I realize that I can't really increase that number for this year's goal, so I'm having to make alternate goals. So, here are a few goals for this year:
1) Read 100 books, not counting re-reads. I love re-reading my favorite books, and I'm not planning on stopping altogether, but I really want to focus on reading new books.
2) Read some longer books. While trying to complete challenges, it is tempting to look for shorter books to read to be able to get through more books. Not this year! This year, I plan on finally reading Anna Karenina by Lev Tolstoy, as I have an excellent translation on hand. I will also read The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, and Outlander by Diana Gabalon.
3) Speaking of The Mysterious Island, this February begins the last season of my favorite TV show, LOST, and I want to read as many books as possible from the LOST Lit List this year. To start this out, I am going to try to read exclusively from that list for the month of January, up until the season premiere. I do have a few book club books to read, so I'll be throwing a few other books into the mix for variety, but the vast majority will be for LOST! :)
4) Speaking of Anna Karenina, another goal is to read at least one book by a Russian author each month. Since my major in college was Russian Language/Literature, I always feel like I know so much about Russian lit. I haven't read any Russian books in ages, though, and a lot of the stuff I read in college has faded. So, I want to renew my knowledge and love of Russian lit this year! And reading things for pleasure vs. reading them as an assignment for class is a really different experience, so I'm looking forward to it!
I think that's pretty much it! Happy reading and happy 2010 to everyone! I look forward to seeing what each of you accomplishes this year!

I haven't set the following months, but I want to have a month just for finishing several series that I've started. Also a month for Favorite Authors (Like another Du Maurier book and Margaret Atwood!), and another month exclusively for books in translation.

Nice goals, Rachel. I especially like the Lost related one. :o)
It's funny, all of the longer books that you listed are on my TBR this year as well. We'll have to make sure to discuss them. By the way, what translation of Anna Karenina do you have? I have the Pevear / Volokhonsky (ditto with The Brothers Karamazov, which is also on my TBR).
No more bookstores until I have no more than 2 TBR's on my shelf........don't know how long it will last but i'll give it a go.

Thanks for that! I poked around over there and it looks like a great group. I'll have to see how long it takes me to get through Ulysses (so far so good), but I think I'll be ok. The weekly reading schedule looks totally doable.

1) Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
2) Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
3) The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
4) Middlemarch by George Eliot
5) Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
b) Read 5 books per month. My count in 2009 was 85 books but I'd like to cut back a little so I can absorb what I'm reading and give myself a break to focus upon chunkier novels
c) Read all the fairy tale re-tellings on my TBR. I'm a fan of fairy tales and reading them leaves me with warm fuzzies.
d) Read all my book club picks for the year. Last year I missed out on a few due to being sick or getting the book from the library at the last minute.
e) In 2009, I started to use the library more. I'd like to keep up this trend.

1) Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
2) Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
3) The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
4) Middlemarch by George Eliot
5) Anna Karenin..."
Tanja, Classics and the Western Canon is reading Middlemarch after we finish Anna Karenina, which we start tomorrow.

Peregrine- Thanks for mentioning that group! It will be fun to read with others. I guess I'll be starting this tomorrow, and it can be my Russian read of this month. :)

In connection to that, One of my resolutions is to have the hallway bookshelves I have been planning built this year!
I also want to catalog what books I have, so that I don't buy doubles,
I don't want a numeric goal, but I do want to read as much as possible. (I also need to cut back on Facebook time!)

Atm, working on finishing my book club book. Determined to finish by Thursday!!

1. Using the library and then only buying books I know I already like. (I bought several books I had no clue about last year...but at least I tried.)
2. Reviewing all the books I read. I love that I can go back and look at the things I loved about a book the first time around.
My one new one is to whittle down my GR to-read list. It's huge...either by reading them or by deleting ones I know I'll never read. And then to be more selective about books that I put in there.

2. To review every book I read, even if it's just a brief comment, so I have more than just a star rating to go by.
3. Reread less, making time for more new reads.
4. Read more contemporary stuff.
(*) This resolution doesn't extend to books which I've read but don't own, or to books by Agatha Christie/Jasper Fforde as I'm guaranteed to love them, intend to have a complete collection of both, and can generally read them in one sitting, so they won't interfere too much in the grand scheme of things.

Books mentioned in this topic
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (other topics)The Count of Monte Cristo (other topics)
Outlander (other topics)
The Mysterious Island (other topics)
Anna Karenina (other topics)
I want to fill in my collection of Stephen King and read them in order of publication.
I want to read more for pleasure this year, and not feel like I have to finish a book that I'm not enjoying.
I want to try to widen my horizons and not judge books by their covers quite so much.
