message 1: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I want to read more Non-fiction.

I want to fill in my collection of Stephen King and read them in order of publication.

I want to read more for pleasure this year, and not feel like I have to finish a book that I'm not enjoying.

I want to try to widen my horizons and not judge books by their covers quite so much.

message 2: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) And I want to use my library more and buy less.

Or, rather than saying buy less, I should say that I want to buy books that I know I like and want to keep, rather than unread books that I'm not sure that I'll like.

Susanna (jb_slasher) Becky wrote: "I want to fill in my collection of Stephen King and read them in order of publication."

Me, too, though I think it'll take me more than a year to accomplish this. :)

Other resolutions for this year: don't get more books from the library until you've read what you have now.

Then read books you own.

Then start completing your collection with missing books from your favourite authors.

I guess those are strict enough for this year if I can keep them :)

message 5: by Kandice (last edited Jan 01, 2010 03:10PM) (new)

Kandice I want to review every book I read, and attempt to read more of the books I own but have not read yet. I won't try to do that exclusively, because that's a recipe for failure, but I will TRY!

message 6: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 501 comments I would like to finally finish books 5-7 of the Harry Potter series, read at least 100 books and cut down on the time I spend on Facebook in order to spend more time reading.

message 7: by Tani (new)

Tani | 137 comments Since I greatly surpassed my 2009 goal of reading 50 books, I'd like to up my goal to 75 this year, which should be challenging without being unachievable.

I want to read at least 1 book by a person of color per month. I kind of had this vaguely as a goal this past year, but without any set numbers, and I didn't do as well as I would have liked with it.

I want to exercise some self-control when I go to the library and not get out so many books. I've been tending to get so many books out that I don't have time to read any of the books that I own.

I want to be a little more focused in my reading this year. Last year, I read a lot of different things and tried a lot of new authors, and it was great fun, but I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed by all the series that I've started and want to read more of, but keep passing over for starting a new series.

Finally, I'd like to continue reading classics. I want to finish War and Peace and Ulysses and maybe start some other big projects.

(Also, completely unrealistically, I'd really love to finish one of the Seasonal Challenges, but I know that's never going to happen, so I'm trying not to think about that one too hard. :D)

message 8: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Like a lot of people said, I want to exercise control over going to the library. I take out more books than I can read and then I feel pressured to read them rather than enjoying them. So I will limit the number I take out at at time to lets say 2.

I also want to read more of my books on my shelf before acquiring new ones. I am still playing with numbers but I think 3 books before I can buy one, especially since I am overflowing again... Sigh.

message 9: by Carol (new)

Carol I would like to attempt Proust for the third time as my summer reading goal . I will start, but I may finish 2years from now. hahahaha

Natalie (aquariusnat) | 41 comments My main goal for 2010 is more classics .

message 11: by Lauren (last edited Jan 01, 2010 09:10PM) (new)

Lauren My main goal for 2010 is whittling down my TBR pile. It is really getting out of control!

I hope to exercise more self control at the book store. Getting gift cards for xmas doesn't help that either...

Also since I am moving (monday) I will be reorganizing my books by author's last name. With Read and Unread shelves as well.

message 12: by Carol (new)

Carol Lauren , good luck with your move. hope it will be advantageous for you.

Hey, I want to finish In Search of Lost Time this summer too. Maybe, we'll be able discuss ideas/opinions and make reading more interesting?

I want to read over 200 books and finish one seasonal challenge (probably the summer one). I also want to read more books in foreign languages, especially French, since for me reading is the best way to learn a language. More 500+ pages books too.

message 14: by Carol (new)

Carol Maybe. I will be reading I think with another also. We have not finalized as yet.I just have not made much headway into it.

message 15: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I'm not going to make an exact goal of books to read this year since I achieved the one I made last year. I do want to read at least 6 classics this year and try to limit my book spending until my TBR is significantly down.

message 16: by Carol (new)

Carol What classics did you have in mind,Alisha?

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments I think my reading resolution is to catch up on group reads for this group and my College Students group. I also want to tackle the books I own first. I keep going out and buying new ones and I haven't read all the other ones I own. It's getting bad. I have no more shelf space. I have boxes filled with books.

message 18: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments carol (akittykat) wrote: "What classics did you have in mind,Alisha?"

Well, I own The Woman in White, Frankenstein, Dracula, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, A Christmas Carol, Les Miserables, and all of Jane Austen's novels. So, most likely one of those.

message 19: by Carol (new)

Carol I have read them all except Woman In White. I try to read at least one classic for the summer. Last year I picked Les Miserables, it took me 8 months to read. It is on my top books list. I am toying with Remembrance Of Things Past for this year.

Manday | 212 comments My goal is 40,000 pages. It could be a stretch since last year I hit around 35,000 pages and I spent 3 months unemployed!! But I will shot for it. I prefer the page goal so I can include some long books I have been meaning to read like Les Miserables and Ulysses

I think I will focus more on pages read as well. I doubled my 2009 goal of 100 books, so I'm not really concerned with quantity this year. I have a number of long books that I'm dying to read.

I want at least half of the books I read in 2010 to be on the 1001 list.

I need to read books I already own first and use the library mainly for new releases.

I'm trying to limit the books I buy to only those that are already on my TBR.

I would like to read as much of the works of John Irving and Charles Dickens as possible (both became favorite authors of mine this past year).

I'm going to try and review every book I read, even if it's only a sentence or two. I tend to get reviewer's stage fright; I feel like anything I write will be inadequate. But I always appreciate the reviews others leave, so I'm going to try and do the same.

Last but not least, I would like to read at least one of the group reads per month and participate in the discussions.

message 25: by Rach (new)

Rach (rachlovestv) | 104 comments I've been contemplating what my reading goal for this year should be, and you guys are a great inspiration!

My 2009 goal was to read 100 books in the year, and I finished with 102! I'm so happy I made it! But knowing that I barely made it, plus the knowledge that that was with reading during every single second of spare time I had during the summer, I realize that I can't really increase that number for this year's goal, so I'm having to make alternate goals. So, here are a few goals for this year:

1) Read 100 books, not counting re-reads. I love re-reading my favorite books, and I'm not planning on stopping altogether, but I really want to focus on reading new books.

2) Read some longer books. While trying to complete challenges, it is tempting to look for shorter books to read to be able to get through more books. Not this year! This year, I plan on finally reading Anna Karenina by Lev Tolstoy, as I have an excellent translation on hand. I will also read The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, and Outlander by Diana Gabalon.

3) Speaking of The Mysterious Island, this February begins the last season of my favorite TV show, LOST, and I want to read as many books as possible from the LOST Lit List this year. To start this out, I am going to try to read exclusively from that list for the month of January, up until the season premiere. I do have a few book club books to read, so I'll be throwing a few other books into the mix for variety, but the vast majority will be for LOST! :)

4) Speaking of Anna Karenina, another goal is to read at least one book by a Russian author each month. Since my major in college was Russian Language/Literature, I always feel like I know so much about Russian lit. I haven't read any Russian books in ages, though, and a lot of the stuff I read in college has faded. So, I want to renew my knowledge and love of Russian lit this year! And reading things for pleasure vs. reading them as an assignment for class is a really different experience, so I'm looking forward to it!

I think that's pretty much it! Happy reading and happy 2010 to everyone! I look forward to seeing what each of you accomplishes this year!

message 26: by Liz (new)

Liz My 2010 goal is to read 75 books, but also to read more books for pleasure and for myself. I'd like to read more of what I already own, particularly classics and non-fiction.

message 27: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (newtomato) My 2010 goal is to have a theme for every month besides the group reads. January is set aside for finishing the Shelf-A-Thon challenge. February is going to be books from the 1001 Books to Read Before You Die list. March is for Hugo-award-winning books.

I haven't set the following months, but I want to have a month just for finishing several series that I've started. Also a month for Favorite Authors (Like another Du Maurier book and Margaret Atwood!), and another month exclusively for books in translation.

message 28: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) My 2010 goal is just to read more of the books that I own. And I've also made myself a book-buying rule: no buying unless it's on my TBR list!

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments Cindy--I like that resolution of having a theme! Sounds interesting!

Nice goals, Rachel. I especially like the Lost related one. :o)

It's funny, all of the longer books that you listed are on my TBR this year as well. We'll have to make sure to discuss them. By the way, what translation of Anna Karenina do you have? I have the Pevear / Volokhonsky (ditto with The Brothers Karamazov, which is also on my TBR).

message 31: by Peregrine (new)

Peregrine Anna Karenina is the Jan/Feb group read in Classics and the Western Canon.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

No more bookstores until I have no more than 2 TBR's on my shelf........don't know how long it will last but i'll give it a go.

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Peregrine wrote: "Anna Karenina is the Jan/Feb group read in Classics and the Western Canon."

Thanks for that! I poked around over there and it looks like a great group. I'll have to see how long it takes me to get through Ulysses (so far so good), but I think I'll be ok. The weekly reading schedule looks totally doable.

message 34: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 326 comments a) Read 5 classics this year
1) Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
2) Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
3) The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
4) Middlemarch by George Eliot
5) Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

b) Read 5 books per month. My count in 2009 was 85 books but I'd like to cut back a little so I can absorb what I'm reading and give myself a break to focus upon chunkier novels

c) Read all the fairy tale re-tellings on my TBR. I'm a fan of fairy tales and reading them leaves me with warm fuzzies.

d) Read all my book club picks for the year. Last year I missed out on a few due to being sick or getting the book from the library at the last minute.

e) In 2009, I started to use the library more. I'd like to keep up this trend.

message 35: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) To read 100 books, which will be difficult because my main goal for 2010 is to read more Historical Fiction (1 a month). They are so long.

Tanja, Classics and the Western Canon is reading Middlemarch after we finish Anna Karenina, which we start tomorrow.

message 37: by Rach (new)

Rach (rachlovestv) | 104 comments Cait- Yep, I have that same translation of Anna Karenina. We'll definitely have to discuss them once we've read them. Maybe that will help me get them actually read. :P

Peregrine- Thanks for mentioning that group! It will be fun to read with others. I guess I'll be starting this tomorrow, and it can be my Russian read of this month. :)

message 38: by rebecca j (new)

rebecca j (technophobe) | 6029 comments My resolution is to cut my TBR pile in half! It currently takes up 2 and a half bookshelves!

In connection to that, One of my resolutions is to have the hallway bookshelves I have been planning built this year!

I also want to catalog what books I have, so that I don't buy doubles,

I don't want a numeric goal, but I do want to read as much as possible. (I also need to cut back on Facebook time!)

message 39: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 326 comments Peregrine, thanks! I'll be reading Middlemarch this month with another GR group starting mid-month. I'll hop on over to the Classics group to add more to the discussion once I start!

Atm, working on finishing my book club book. Determined to finish by Thursday!!

message 40: by Carol (new)

Carol Amelia good luck with finishing your degree.

message 41: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Last year I started a few new habits that I want to keep up this year:

1. Using the library and then only buying books I know I already like. (I bought several books I had no clue about last year...but at least I tried.)

2. Reviewing all the books I read. I love that I can go back and look at the things I loved about a book the first time around.

My one new one is to whittle down my GR to-read list. It's huge...either by reading them or by deleting ones I know I'll never read. And then to be more selective about books that I put in there.

message 42: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jess0702) | 68 comments I want to read more non-fiction and more classics. I feel like I've gotten away from both being out of school. And definitely to use the summer break away from teaching to read more than I did this summer!

message 43: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) My reading resolution is definitely to read more classics; I have my eyes on Dickens's Bleak House and Little Dorrit, Collins's books and Tolstoy's Anna Karenina in particular. =)

message 44: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 1045 comments My main goal is to read all of the unread books on my shelves, so I can buy more books. I promised my mom I wouldn't buy anymore books (unless they are dirt cheap like Goodwill, garage sales, etc.) until I finish the ones on my shelves. I do not break commitments, so I have to do what I promised. Thank goodness for Goodwill and garage sales.

message 45: by Carol (new)

Carol When it comes to books promise nothing.

message 46: by Helen (new)

Helen (hlm91) 1. Not to buy any more books until I've cleared the first section of my to-be-read pile. *

2. To review every book I read, even if it's just a brief comment, so I have more than just a star rating to go by.

3. Reread less, making time for more new reads.

4. Read more contemporary stuff.

(*) This resolution doesn't extend to books which I've read but don't own, or to books by Agatha Christie/Jasper Fforde as I'm guaranteed to love them, intend to have a complete collection of both, and can generally read them in one sitting, so they won't interfere too much in the grand scheme of things.

message 47: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 326 comments It's sad. I've only read 2 books this month! 3 books behind goal!
