My friend, the poet Molly Fisk suggests that instead of making a New Years resolution, we pick a word for the year. Here's what she has to say.

The link doesn't work for those of us who don't recognize the People's Republic of Facebook.

Does she mean a word for the year to come? A verb to symbolize our actions to be?

message 3: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 16546 comments Mod
I'll ask Molly if there's another link. Stand by.

I do belong to Facebook and it would seem her privacy settings are for friends only...I am not allowed access either.....

Here's her answer:Ruth, it will be up on my website in a day or two, and you might also be able to send them to the kvmr site (http://www.kvmr.org) after it plays tonight at 6:25 pm.

Here's her website: http://www.mollyfisk.com/

Shoot. Am I the only fool without his own website these days?

I'd be hard put to find one word to describe last year.

However, Molly's not suggesting we do that. She's saying we should pick one word to consider/mediate upon/mull over during the coming year.

message 8: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments If I could meditate on one word for next year I think it would have to be TOLERANCE. Tolerance for things I can't change , tolerance for things I can . So my word will have a two fold meaning for me.

I like determination...it has shades of meaning.....it could be an attitude to cultivate, or it could be a process of defining a situation and then a way of moving forward through it.....

PROACTIVE for me. I'm too reactive for my own good.

Savvy (savvysuzdolcefarniente) | 1458 comments PROACTIVINATION = PROACTIVE + DETERMINATION!

And it rolls off the tongue pretty cool too!
Okay, what thinkest thou?

message 13: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
Yeah. I just trademarked and copywrote proactive. See my lawyer (um, after I hire him).

I'm late for everything. And people usually see me going (home, chiefly). I'm up for "Most Boring of the Year: 2009." I would say vote for me, but you'd probably fall asleep beforehand.

I'm thinking "perserverance."

message 17: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments I am sorry didn't mean to be rude.

My mother worked all her life, so we all worked from age 16 on. I want to retire, and can't yet. The economy washed away the retirement.

It is going to be interesting to see this insurance bill. I still don't grasp all the ins and outs. The language is not meant for the layman.

Why are you asking us?! Be determined and proactive...YOU decide:-)

message 19: by Carol (last edited Jan 02, 2010 02:28AM) (new)

Carol | 10410 comments PERSEVERANCE,TOLERANCE OR THE STAMINA TO BE DETERMINED TO BE PROACTIVE IS WHAT I MEANT TO SAY. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA CAN YOU FEEL THE EXCITEMENT BUILDING, WHAT WORD WILL IT BE. Gabi you got me. My leg is still aching. hehe

On fifth thought, my word is "mustardseed." Yes, for 2010, mustardseed.

message 21: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments We will watch it grow and grow and grow, Oh yea of little faith.

Molly suggests we start out by looking up the definition and derivation of our word.

per⋅se⋅ver⋅ance
  /ˌpɜrsəˈvɪərəns/
–noun
1. steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., esp. in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.

2. Theology. continuance in a state of grace to the end, leading to eternal salvation.

Origin:
1300–50; ME perseveraunce < MF perseverance < L persevērantia. See persevere, -ance

message 23: by Savvy (new)

Savvy (savvysuzdolcefarniente) | 1458 comments I think we need a PASSKEY for the PASTICHES OF PREVIOUSLY PROFFERRED PALAVERS.

But my word for the year is JOUISSANCE (remember that?)

"A French word which derives from the verb jouir meaning to have pleasure in, to enjoy, to appreciate, to savour; with a secondary meaning, as in English, of having rights and pleasures in the use of, as in the phrases “she enjoyed good health”, “she enjoyed a considerable fortune”, and “all citizens enjoy the right of freedom of expression”.

Oh where is that dear Joanie when you need her???

message 24: by Savvy (new)

Savvy (savvysuzdolcefarniente) | 1458 comments I like that quote Gabi!....OFF with their heads! :-)

Pretty soon, we won't be allowed to wear underwear on airplanes!

message 25: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments Every airline seat will need a chamberpot, because you won't be able to get up to use the restroom 1 hour before landing. How do they expect to make money if people aren't drinking their refreshments that they will now charge for. They already have a captive audience with the movies you don't like. And overweight passengers will have to have their fat flaps checked for weapons. You would be amazed what can hide in there.

Susanne who needs underwear, they see all and know all anyway with the full body scans.

How did we get here from the idea of choosing a word for the new year?

message 27: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
Word for the Year: circuitous

message 28: by Carol (last edited Jan 03, 2010 12:17PM) (new)

Carol | 10410 comments So back to the word at hand. I still like tolerance.
I chose it for endurance

tolerance [tälər əns:]
n.
ME tolleraunce < MFr tolerance < L tolerantia
1.
a) a tolerating or being tolerant, esp. of views, beliefs, practices, etc. of others that differ from one's own
b) freedom from bigotry or prejudice

3. the ability to endure

So now you're stuck with it, Anna. You'll have to meditate on perspicuous all year. What a perspicuous thing to do!

Carol | 10410 comments Perspicuous- that is a good one also.
