oh i can't wait!!!
thanks for the heads up!
Carol:DD and I were disappointed to not have a Shutter Island trailer in the preview set before Sherlock Holmes. She spotted Leonardo in one preview and we thought that might have been it, but no.... we are looking forward to it too!

I wonder how they will handle the ending, and that's all I'm saying.
I've seen the preview a couple of times, and it IS creepy!! I remember being very disturbed by the book; it was so difficult to see the character lose all control over his life! The movie looks even more tense.
Joyce:The book Shutter Island was disturbing. It has been a long time since I read it, and that feeling still sticks in my memory!

Yes I saw the preview trailer at the movies the other night and right from the beginning I knew that was the movie. I remembered hearing people say it was coming out. I haven't read my book yet (got it hc) so will start it soon I hope. And it did look scary. Part of me wants to see it and part of me doesn't.

How about the did not read Shutter Island, have no plans to see the movie and don't really care one way or another bench?

Those people have to stand, LOL.
There she is! Wouldn't you know a thread about Shutter Island would bring back our good friend Nancy from lurking! Nancy (Hrdcovers) wrote: "Well, wonderfriend, all I can say is that I hope the movie is better than the book. lol"
Ha Ha Ann.....Even if I'm not posting, I do try to read many of the threads once a week. I've been looking for the thread to post our top books of 2010 and didn't see it.
Good to know you are out there Nancy! Cheryl posted in a different spot that she'll start the top books thread soon. This is one of the things I miss most about not being able to follow the posts "un-threaded" like we did on AOL.

This format is definitely taking some getting used to after being accustomed to AOL boards for many years. Once AOL dropped their boards I quit posting for quite some time; this is the first one I've gone back to. I miss the AOL format :(
Joyce:I hear you and concur; stick around, Goodreads starts to grow on you and this is such a special group!

I've always been on the IHSI bench, although it's the only one of his books I didn't care for. I'm hoping the movie will give me a new prospective on the story. There's always the chance to jump bench!
I was rather ambivalent about Shutter Island. I didn't hate it, but I didn't think it was one of his best. I do like Leonardo DiCaprio, but I am nervous about any movie that postpones its opening. This movie was originally scheduled for last fall and was pulled. That usually means there is something about the movie that has made the producers nervous.
cheryl-a friend's son worked as a grip on the movie. he told her the reason it was pulled was because it was originally scheduled to open around the same time as harry potter or twilight- i can't remember which- and scorcese (or however you spell his name) didn't want to competition- wanted SI to be the movie that people wanted to see when it opened, rather than a week or so later..
Cecelia/Ceil wrote: "I'm hoping the movie will give me a new prospective on the story. There's always the chance to jump bench!..."Ceil, I'll save a place for you on the Loves SI bench just in case....
Well - it's official. I just reread Shutter Island and I'm not moving off the Loves SI bench. I loved it more this time around. The "creepiness" didn't make me the least uneasy - just more appreciative of Lehane's skill. His characters are wonderful and I imagine Leonardo will be excellent in the movie!

The plus side of not reading it is I can judge the movie on its own rather than based on how true to the book it is. I don't want to be sitting there thinking "wait.. THAT didn't happen in the book!"
Marcy:I am glad Shutter Island stood up well to a re-read. (and am not surprised, I also think Dennis is a very skillful writer. I am probably not going to re-read SI before the movie, too little time to read, but am eager to see it.
DD just finished reading The Lovely Bones and does want to go see the movie, I am not sure if I want to skim re-read it first or not.

LOVED SI...I saw the preview last night and almost peed my pants, I was so excited! Bummer that the release date is a week after DH leaves, so I'll be on my own seeing that one.
Barry wrote: "I plan on rereading it as soon as I make it through Under the Dome."I am nearing the end of Under the Dome and I'm going to miss that cotton-pickin' town!
Here's a fun radio interview with Dennis Lehane on Shutter Island... click down to the bottom of the page till you see Dennis' picture, then you'll see how to access the podcast.http://www.kiss108.com/pages/Matty.html
I've changed my mind again. Do I have enough time to reread before I see it on the 20th?
...I've changed my mind again. Do I have enough time to reread before I see it on the 20th?Of course you do, if you have the book. I thought the reread was very much worth it.
Oh, I LOVED Shutter Island and have been eagerly awaiting the movie since I heard it was in production! I'll have to take my BFF for her birthday on the 19th, since we're both Lehane fans. :D
Thanks Carol! Carol/Bonadie wrote: "Here's a fun radio interview with Dennis Lehane on Shutter Island... click down to the bottom of the page till you see Dennis' picture, then you'll see how to access the podcast.

My copy of Shutter Island came back to me today. I did not plan to hold onto it, so if somebody wants it, let me know and I'll ship it off.
Okay so who has gone to see the movie? And what did you think? I'm afraid the movie will be as confusing to me as the book was.
Gail:I had hoped to see it this weekend with DD, but went to see Michael Connelly instead. Maybe next weekend!
Gail/Ladyvolz wrote: "Okay so who has gone to see the movie? And what did you think? I'm afraid the movie will be as confusing to me as the book was. "
Carole, Sherry and I agree that the movie/book combination is a good one. I liked the movie, I thought it was faithful to the story (except one spoiler) and set the tone as Lehane meant it to be set. Although my watch said hours had gone by, it certainly did not feel that way.One thing we did learn though, without a reservation, it can take 3 hours to get a table in Providence on a Saturday night. Good thing Sherry's husband had juice.
Barry:That is good news! I am eager to see Shutter Island the movie very soon. Michael Connelly talked a bit about Clint Eastwood doing Terry McCaleb in Bloodwork with a lot of changes to the book and what he hoped will be a good adaptation of The Lincoln Lawyer with Matthew McConaughey as Mickey Haller. That should be interesting, supposed to start filming in May 2010.

ditto what barry said. we gave the movie 8 thumbs up. my husband-who didn't read the book- thought the movie was a little confusing but all came together in the end. said that now he knows what happens, he'd like to see it again to watch for clues.i hope the lincoln lawyer is more true to the original story than bloodwork was. don't understand why directors feel they have to change books. they did that to my sister's keeper, too.. as well as others that i can't think of off the top of my head this early in the morning..lol
Sherry wrote: "ditto what barry said. we gave the movie 8 thumbs up. my husband-who didn't read the book- thought the movie was a little confusing but all came together in the end. said that now he knows what hap..."We had a great discussion over dinner about the movie, and it was fun to hear Alfie's (Sherry's DH) perspective as one who hadn't read the book. I wish I could say more, but that would involve spoilers. Maybe I'll start a post under the spoiler folder.
I found the movie pretty clear, although that has to be because I'd read the book, albeit when it was published. I remembered the overall arc but had forgotten just enough of the detail to make it a fresh experience. We agreed that Scorcese was pretty faithful to the language of the book, overall.
I found the movie to be a little arty and dreamy, which I think will annoy some reviewers and viewers. But I thought Scorcese captured the overall doom and creepiness of the novel quite well. I am not DiCaprio's biggest fan--don't know what Scorcese's fascination is with him-- but even though I always pictured Teddy as a husky Irish cop, his Teddy didn't detract from the movie.
I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed the movie if I hadn't read the book; some if it is just too dark -- those who've read the book likely know what I'm talking about.
I just reread the end of the book, and I don't know if what I'm about to say is a spoiler, exactly, but if you're hinky about such things better skip to the next post.... Scorcese adds a scene to the end that makes clear what was ambiguous and open to interpretation in the book. I thought it was brilliant; I'd be interested to hear what other readers of the book think.

One M/T poster trivia: Guess who carries a miniature bottle of hot sauce in his/her pocket to ward against wussy chile and other dishes that are supposed to be spicy?
Thanks Barry, Sherry and Carol for your reviews. The movie sounds like a winner! After seeing the trailer, my DH (did not read book) is reluctant to go. I will see it with or without him.
Hmm, Carol. I think I will guess Barry! Carol/Bonadie wrote: "One M/T poster trivia: Guess who carries a miniature bottle of hot sauce in his/her pocket to ward against wussy chile and other dishes that are supposed to be spicy? "
Marcy: I am so eager to see the movie of Shutter Island even more now! Luckily DD also read and loved the book so I have an avid Lehane fan ready to go too. The review comments here make me even more excited! I wish more of us could go together as a group like Carol, Sherry, Barry and Alfie!

Carol:'That is what I am hoping for - a fresh experience of the unraveling of the clues.. I liked your comment about the ending of the movie. I wonder if a focus group or reader reaction to the book was the impetus for that. Sounds like a great Saturday evening! How lucky you all are to live close enough to be able to get together for a movie and dinner. Especially a movie made from a book which caused so much discussion on the M/T Board!
I'll admit to the hot sauce. When I think of how mean Carol is to Daniel, This is almost like being heaped with praise.Sunday morning I met with my local friends who did the Saturday night Shutter Island showing. They did not like it as much, thought it too ponderous and arty, with exception of how Scorsese brought the ending together.
Et tu, Barry???Barry wrote: "I'll admit to the hot sauce. When I think of how mean Carol is to Daniel, This is almost like being heaped with praise.
