RandomAnthony | 14536 comments You getting drunk? Not getting drunk? Staying home? Going out? Getting arrested? Need bail money? Avoiding "amateur night" altogther?

message 2: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Staying home, getting a moderate buzz on.

What about you?

message 3: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I will probably do the same, actually. I have not been up at midnight on New Year's Eve since, I'm going to say, oh, 1995. I may break the streak this year! Who's with me?

The local bars also do free shuttles/rides home. I'm tempted to volunteer to drive drunks home at 4AM. That might be kind of interesting.

message 4: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Good for you. But if you do that, just remember you have to take all of them, not just the young female variety.

message 5: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I thought I could make requests! What a rip-off...

message 6: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I'll never forget the disappointment with New Years Eve when I first moved to the Central time zone in '97. We turned on the TV just before midnight, only to see that the danged ball had already dropped, and Dick Clark had gone home to bed.

Midnight was pretty anticlimactic.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I work until 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve. Yippee.

message 8: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments I don't do anything for New Year's. I'll go to bed when I want to on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day is just going to be the Friday before I go back to work.

message 9: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Workin'.

message 10: by Mary JL (new)

Mary JL (maryjl) | 250 comments The only thing I know for sure is I will NOT go out to eat! The restaurants are overcrowded, overpriced; lots of durnks, and the servers rushed!

I can go out with friends on Sunday night, January 3rd and have a nicer, quieter meal at better prices with better service and fewer drunks!

I went to a nice restaurant just once on New Year's Eve and it cured me fast of that idea!

New Years is a holiday that bugs me. There is so much pressure to have the most! fun ever and top last year. When really all I want to do is go home and go to sleep.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Party yay! can't wait for 2010 to begin... :-)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Amen, Sally! I usually just watch CNN and feel lame.

I'm even bah-humbuggier about New Years than I am about Christmas.

message 15: by Lori (new)

Lori I've done my wild New Year's, now there's nothing more I like than a nice quiet evening at home. Yep. I'm oooooold. Richard always likes to watch the ball go down on Times Square. Boooooooring!

message 16: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Quiet evening at home. Yup. That's the ticket. Read a book.

message 17: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Quiet evening at home, I guess. I think my husband is going out but I don't love New Year's Eve. I've had some really fun ones in the past! But this year I'll just be laying low. I'll probably be right here, on Goodreads, drinking by myself. Or drinking with you all!

message 18: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ooh! Gretchen's idea is great! Let's all get drunk and get on goodreads. No drunk driving. Just drunk posting.

message 19: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) And the difference would show up how?

message 20: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Excellent point. We could do a controlled experiment...

message 21: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i will be the designated poster

message 22: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Poster child for sober posting?

message 23: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments yes. i will drive the group home metaphorically when you are all typing unreadable sentences and trying to spell curse words using only z's and p's

message 24: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I think a friend was supposed to be in in town to visit, but I'm not sure as I haven't heard anything about it in a couple of weeks.

Either way, I plan to drive up Highway 10 (beautiful scenic highway), spend some time on Petit Jean doing the Eagle Cave hike and seeing familiar, nostalgic haunts, and following it up with a cup of the most awesome hot chocolate I've ever had.

I think I'll bring Robby with me.

message 25: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Robby will love it, no doubt. I mean the trip, not the hot chocolate.

message 26: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Heidi will be spending New Year's Eve fending off the advance of Little Rockians enamored with her new haircut...

message 27: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Little Rockefellers?

message 28: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments That works. What does one call a resident of Little Rock, if not a "resident of Little Rock"?

message 29: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Rockers.

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments We have a local CD/DVD/game store that has been holding a New Years Day buy one get one free sale since at least 1999, and that is my big New Year's tradition. It involves getting up early, before the good stuff is gone.

New Year's Eve the last few years has been drinks & movies at home with friends. With our new glut of great neighborhood bars, we may go out for a while...depends on if the bars are doing some prix fixe menu crap or if we can just get a drink or two and then leave again.

message 31: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i will watch texas hold em on ESPN as i fall into and out of consciousness while listening to all the fun people playing shanghai rummy in the kitchen at a friends house. i have no prob falling asleep at someone else's house

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I will drink pear cider and snicker at Anderson Cooper trying to keep up with Kathy Griffin on CNN.
But I love the idea of posting here at the same time.

message 33: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Which time zone will be the standard for such posting? Or should we have a progression of "Happy New Year" postings from Eastern to Pacific?

message 34: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I hear Eastern Standard is the real time. :)

message 35: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Uh ... yeah. Or we could just go with GMT. Let's see, it will be 4 pm on the west coast ....

message 36: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie Having a Wii party, eating and drinking rum and eggnog like it's going out of style.

message 37: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) Watching my favorite band perform at the Ryman.

message 38: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments yeah, Vanessa. Rub it in.

message 39: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) Sorry, Gretchen. I never do anything good for New Year's, so I'm a little over the top. Last year, I was home before midnight. At midnight, I watched the fireworks over the bridge in New Orleans. On my computer.

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments What band?

message 41: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) Old Crow Medicine Show. I hope I don't get arrested but I sure plan to kick up my heels.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, a Wii party that sounds like fun, maybe we will do that too

message 43: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Do people get arrested OCMS shows, or is that a New Year's Eve bonus? I haven't heard much of them except that "Wagon Wheel" song, but I dug that.

message 44: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) Well, not as far as I know....I was just making a general statement. I mean, I generally try to avoid being arrested every day. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

message 45: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Must get boring not getting arrested ... every day.

message 46: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) Yeah, kind of.

message 47: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Tell us more.

message 48: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Are you asking her to tell you more things she tries not to do every day? That might be a long list.

message 49: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Start at the beginning, Vanessa.

message 50: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) Oh, I'm totally full of crap. One of my jobs is working at a law office and they kind of frown upon their employees getting arrested. On the other hand, if I DID get arrested in my hometown, the jail is apparently easy to escape from. Because it happens all the time. Now, I'm not kidding about that.
