...A life of Immortality, her Beauty never sleeps...
Sleepless Beauty
Prologue
MY FIRST INSTINCTS were to run.
I ran and ran as fast as my body allowed me to go with every intention to try and escape from him. I could feel my long russet hair whipping from side to side as my clothes got lost in the gentle flicks of raindrops. I could feel my legs weaken but I pushed myself to run faster. I had to tell myself that I was flying and every step meant safety.
Wet mud continued to spray up my legs as each stride took me farther away from the building and deeper into the field to nowhere.
I heard him yelling behind me but I knew he wasn’t close enough yet, because the screaming of my name still sounded distant away. I had never run this fast in my life but I ran like my life depended on it. Well it did actually. After all he was going to kill me.
As my feet continued to thud against the wet grass his voice managed to sound closer. He yelled my name possessively as he searched for me around campus. His thick black boots pressed against the wet surfaces soundlessly and his breathing was every bit as soft as a whisper. But his superhuman strides were gaining on me.
I had thought it was impossible for someone to run that fast and all the while managed to look graceful. It was kind of stupid to be thinking he was graceful at a time like this but I couldn’t help it. I skidded to a halt when I found out that I had nowhere else to run.
I jerked my head around to see if he was near and then decided to hide behind the nearest rose bush that was neatly groomed behind the stone walls of Edinburgh High.
The school grounds stretched out a full length of five football fields as the black old ancient Gothic cathedral managed to put history to shame. The walls were high and covered in stone and the walls were decorated with rose bushes sprawling out in front of it. I tried to catch my breath but my panting was uncontrollable.
I gasped as I heard his paces slow towards me.
I had no doubt that he’d find me, but he'd circled the area scanning every inch of grass and trees to find me. I should’ve prayed or something but my head was a muddled mess and all I was thinking was, Oh no! I’m gonna die, I’m gonna die! My breathing became heavier and I covered my mouth to silence my whimpers.
His paces crept closer and my body shook with fear which made every piece of my hair stand up on the nape of my neck. He was so close I could smell his aftershave and leather.
“I know you’re out here Indy I can smell you!” He said furiously. He seemed to be using his nose to guide him through the darkness and inhaled a huge amount of air to point him in the next direction.
He growled maliciously. “Hide and Seek makes me angry Indy, you’re going to be in big trouble once I find you.” He taunted and I could hear the anger in his voice. I couldn’t help it, but a squeal escaped my mouth as his foot neared my body. Slowly my eyes traced the movement of his foot as if I mentally slowed down the motion. I could hear his breathing louder now as if it were right in my ear.
I held my breath for what felt like ages and his figure retreated from my view. With a heavy sigh I took my hand away from my mouth and relaxed a little bit, but to add to my horror, I managed to make a noise as a twig cracked beneath me and he paused in his tracks.
Shit! I'm dead. I gasped when his body swung in my direction and with that, he instantly parted the Rose bush hedge and revealed my cowering figure.
“Found you!” He yelled and chuckled when I jumped in fear.
My eyes were wide as I stared straight through those monstrous eyes. Just a couple of days ago I was sharing kisses with the boy standing before me. Just a few hours ago I considered him as bold and as beautiful as ever; with his tousled brown hair falling into his pale blue eyes, and his flawless face that appeared to be somewhat perfected as if every angle of his features were carved beautifully into a marble rock.
But staring at him now? It was impossible to let go of the monster side of him. I wanted to scream but my voice seemed distant almost like I couldn’t touch it.
"Indy? I told you not to play games with me, but you didn't listen...did you?" He said in a menacing tone. It was more of a demand than anything.
“P-Please don’t hurt me.” I pleaded but that only made his smile grow wider. Up until now I knew that Cale Hyde was not my high school sweetheart anymore and knew that something very bad had happened to him, but it was nothing close to what I would discover once I saw what he really was.
I gasped when I seen his fangs release from their sheaths and he ran his tongue across them as if he saw the juiciest meat on the menu. His eyes beamed at me longingly with eyes mixed with lust and hunger.
I slowly slid backwards trying to get myself farther away from him but he managed to mirror my moves and step closer. I contemplated running, but I knew he was too fast so I instantly dismissed the idea.
“Cale please!” I pleaded in a shaky voice.
“Now, now Indy, you’ve been a naughty girl.” He shook his head in disapproval. "You outta be punished." He said.
The moon cast an eerie glow to his much paler skin while his eyes bored into me like frozen daggers.
In a brief second he moved so fast it was an instant blur. His body was kneeling beside me, with my neck cradled in his grasp and arched up to his lips.
I struggled hopelessly in his arms but he was too strong. I even tried kicking and screaming as a way to struggle free, but all I was doing was adding more frustration and annoyance to this situation.
I didn’t know that I clawed him on his shoulder because he was slightly bleeding, although it faded as instantly as I had scratched it. I couldn't believe my eyes. Who is this monster and what has he done to my boyfriend? I silently thought as tears started to stream down my cheeks.
I wasn't dead yet, but my life flashed before my eyes as his fangs sliced into my neck.
My world started to spin and the sound of his slurping drowned my squirms as the stars were swallowed up with darkness. That was the last moments I had remembered being a normal human being. Now I was one of them. I was a late bloomer that had finally come to my senses Cale had told me.
I didn’t know what that meant back then but now I knew exactly what he was referring to as if it was stained at the back of my mind. I knew now that it was an inside joke. I was obviously the last student to be made or reborn so one would say and my senses were heightened to the extent.
Since then my world has never been the same. I was subdued and forced out from human society and reborn into this dark world of immortal freedom. But I would hardly call this life as being free.
I was a stone cold predator stalking prey whenever the burning sensation of thirst bubbled in my throat. I was anything but free, I was trapped. I fed on animal blood to survive and lived with the many students that I would have called my kind so I never had the privelage of tasting human blood. Although I was told that it was intoxicating and tasted nothing like anything I could even imagine and ten times more of that, but I was completely foreign to any contact to the mundane society.
I was trapped in an eighteen year old body and trapped among the undead and yet 'my kind' was every bit oblivious to the human eye. Although I hadn't seen a human in well over twenty odd decades. I was yearning for that freedom. Because attending Edinburgh High kept me isolated and this was all I knew, it was home.
Now I was determined to find a new place to call home. If moving to America could bring me that freedom? Then leaving my life behind and risking exposure was worth every second of it.
My name is Indica Freemon and I’m a vampire.
I guess you can say I’m lucky and free, and that death cannot harm me. But when you’ve lived through many centuries like I have? Well, death has never tasted any sweeter.
