Robin Altman | 9 comments I'm new here, new to the Board & new to the group... looking forward to the challenge. I'd welcome any advice, hints, etc. from my new friends. 1st question: is the official start date Jan. 1?

message 2: by Merri (new)

Merri Hello there!!! Welcome! Welcome! Welcome my friend- yes we start Jan 1st! It is a great place to find out what others are reading- get reviews and add titles to your TBR list!

Hey there Robin! Welcome to our cozy little area ;)

The official start is to post the first book that you finish in 2010. It can besomething that you started in 2009 though. My best advice would be to look at how people posted for 2009 and then adapt from that a method that is comfortable for you. Some people like to just list books, other people like to add reviews, links, etc. I would be happy to answer any other questions you have.

Karol | 221 comments Welcome, Robin! I'm a book fanatic - I thoroughly enjoy reading whatever people post. I love seeing comments, but even if folks just list a title and author, I'll look it up on Goodreads if it grabs my attention. I hope you'll find this a great place to hang out - but I'll warn you: my "To Read" list has mushroomed!

Robin Altman | 9 comments Thanks everyone for the welcomes.... I can't wait to get started next week. I'm an Amazon.com junkie. My husband says the amazon man comes everyday. not only do I read a lot, I buy everything I read, and never give anything away. I'm not so much into lending either (a big issue with my mom)... but as my son says, I don't even like to lend him books, and he only takes them upstairs!

Actually, I'm not that obsessive over my books, but I like to go downstairs, look at the shelves, and feel good about having read so many. This will be great! I'll actually have a record of my accomplishments.

Looking forward to recommendations.... I've got a backlog of about 40 on my "to read" shelf (that's a read shelf in my dining room, by the way).... so I'm good to go for a while.

Have a good holiday!

Joy | 1116 comments Welcome Robin!!! Good luck on your 2010 challenge!! I know how you feel about looking at your bookshelves...I have shelves stuffed full of books I have already read, and then I have my TBR shelf...I don't know which I like more...lol...the sense of accomplishment or the sense of adventure and excitement knowing that there are STILL so many great books to get through. Happy Reading!

Merri OK I am the opposite- unless a book is a classic- I lend it out or give it away- I have no room-if I want to keep buying new ones!

message 8: by Joy (new)

Joy | 1116 comments I cannot give my books away, it'd be like sending away a good friend and never seeing them again! It's awful! I am a member at paperbackswap.com, but I NEVER post anything in my shelf, cause I can't ever let my books go...=( Maybe I should work on that this year!

message 9: by Robin (new)

Robin Altman | 9 comments Merri, whats the point of buying them if you're not going to keep them? You might as well save the money and go to the library.... It's why I refuse to get a Kindle! My bookshelves are 3 deep -- they were originally built for Joe's legal folders... 5 huge shelves.... he now has 1 1/2. I'll post a picture later!

Once I read a book I pass it on or donate it. I don't have enough room to store books since I have so many unread books. I will start a thread in the main forum and we can post pics of our book collections, that's a great idea Robin! I don't feel bad not keeping books because I never read the same book twice and I like knowing that someone else who cannot afford books is getting to read!

Robin, I'd love to see that photo!

Merri Robin- when you come visit you will understand why! I used to keep a lot of my books- until we moved last March-love the new house lots of better features but not a lot of storage- i bought 6 large shopping bags to donate to the library!

Robin Altman | 9 comments Just finished Elizabeth Berg "Home Safe". She does a great job writing about middle aged women redefining themselves... this was very good, about an author, widow, mom, friend, teacher....

message 16: by JanB (new)

JanB | 980 comments Robin, I love E Berg. She has the unique ability to put into words what I feel in my heart but can't express. I've loved most of her books, with only a couple exceptions.

message 17: by Robin (new)

Robin Altman | 9 comments same here... there were a couple I never got through, but for the most part, they're winners

Michelegg (mggoertzen) Robin I have Home Safe on my 2010 to read list. I say Amen to what Jan says, too. I've been reading her for a few years and just feel like she speaks to my heart. I always have pages of quotes to write down after I've read her books. She just writes what I feel. Such a talented woman to be able to give voice to other womens emotions.
