That would be my favorite Dean Koontz book, "Lightning". The main character Laura spends much of her childhood in an orphanage for girls, that has a sinister janitor that takes a liking to Laura.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions and the welcome to Koontzland! I have placed Lightning on my "to-read" shelf (which is alarmingly - or wonderfully! - long) and I also looked up and added The Darkest Evening of the Year. Both sound like good reads so I'll definitely be checking them out! Thank you again for the help! And for the reading suggestions! Oh, and again for the welcome!! :)

Don't forget we are reading Sole Survivor and Hideaway in September and Tick Tock in October :-) Feel welcome to join us in reading any of those titles. Sometimes it's fun to read a title around the same time as others to see what questions we can help each other answer or to see what things stand out to different people.

Margaret Hello! I'm Margaret, from Missouri, and I am glad I found this group because Koontz is one of my favorite authors of all time. The first book of his I read was Odd Thomas, and I've been in love with his work ever since! :D

Carol Hi, I'm Carol from NJ. I had started Koontz with the Odd Thomas books, but frankly they just didn't appeal to me. My niece is a Koontz fanatic and bought two or three of his books while she was staying here. I've read one or two, and now I'm a koontz person. I look forward to hearing what the koontz-ers have to say about anything and everything.

Gail | 22 comments Hi Koontz readers! I am a long time Koontz fan. Years ago I had a library of his books that I had read. Then life got really busy and I didn't have time to read for a few years. I am retired now, and am back to reading! I love Goodreads and am active in it. At the present time I am reading Phantoms. I also like Stephen King, but find him to be a little too descriptive sometimes..I really don't want to read the "feel of the scene" that he paints sometimes.

message 843: by Aundria (new)

Aundria Premo | 7 comments Hi! Can't tell you how thrilled I am to find this place of fellow Dean Koontz fans! He is far and away my favorite author. He is also one heck of a stand-up guy! When my husband was deployed to Iraq, I wrote to Dean, mentioning this fact, and telling him how wonderful his books were and what they meant to me. Well, he wrote me back. Not a "form" letter, a personal letter, and a signed copy of one of his books. In the letter he wrote (under the typed "form" letter), he told me how much he admired and respected my husband's service and since my husband and our family were of the "selfless few who defend America," he was including the specially signed book. Unlike another author whom I shall not name, who said only the uneducated joined the service....Grrrr.... Anyway, I love Dean and I'm pretty sure not one of his novels has ever disappointed. Now I'm trying to find the rare, older work he wrote in the beginning of his career. I've read most of the work he originally published as Dean Koontz, but have trouble finding the novels originally published under pseudonym. I do have one by "Leigh Nichols," and I THINK it was called "Blaze," if I'm not mistaken. I'm excited about the Odd Thomas movie! Glad Dean has some creative control so they won't ruin like they did Phantoms. The Frankenstein novels are becoming a television series! YAY! My favorites are The Bad Place, the Christopher Snow novels (CS MOVIES?! YES PLEASE!). One Door Away from Heaven, Door to December, 77 Shadown Street, The Face, From the Corner of His Eye, Winter Moon, Breathless and What the Night Knows are on my "reread" shelf! Can't wait for the new Odd Thomas books, there are at least two more that I know of, so we'll see! Anyway! Glad I found ya'll!! **Yep, I'm southern! :) **

I have long admired and been inspired by the triumph of the human spirit in every one of Koontz's novels. He uses God and weaves in religion, all without ever having to beat the reader over the head with it. Subtle and delicate, which is why it always works. God bless him! :)

Yep! Once I cracked page one of 77 Shadow Street, after having toured the frightening and awesome interactive web experience with the building, I couldn't stop til I was done! Took me four and a half hours, but I did it all in one sitting! Couldn't help myself:) In my humble opinion, I think 77 Shadow Street would make an AWESOME MOTION PICTURE!

You should try your library system for his older works. I was amazed my library had some of his older works (I didn't even know they existed) and they are on my list of books I have to read. That is awesome he answered your letter. Dean Koontz desereves respect for this. And thanks to your husband for his time in the service.
