Dave,
GoodReads can be very good indeed, especially if you use the Goodreads Giveaway program. However, many of the groups expect new members to make friends and be part of the group before they post any promo.
If you have posted promo, be sure to go back to see how your promo was received.
Best wishes,
Rowena Cherry

I regret the faux pas. It was not my intent to bull about the china shop with my raucous rant.
Dave,
What faux pas? I didn't notice one.
My comments referred not to this group but was a gentle heads-up about one or two of the larger readers groups that have a "Spammers Circle In Hell" section where they revile fly-by authors... although authors have been known to avoid being pilloried if they return promptly and respond humbly to any comments.
:-)
In every community, there's stuff that works, and stuff that isn't so successful. It's good to know the local pitfalls.
Best wishes,
Rowena

Dave,
The best way to contribute is to read the description and guidelines of each group that interests you, and also to check out the sections and subsections.
You don't post "promo" in "general" if there is a section designated "promo here".

Just published a NEW post about Virtual Reading Communities...lots of links to hook-up to your audience. Check it out: http://joconquerobstacles.com/
Enjoy!

Check the Author Rules :)
Hope to see you there!

It is considered a faux pas to jump into a genre community just to plug your book unless they have a venue for that. You should be prepared to offer a copy of your book to a reviewer.

Hey Sarah,
Could you review my book titled "Developed Minds, Developing Minds and the Stupid Terrorists"?
Here's the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Developed-Minds...

A most impressive blog! But you don't give any contact information! So how do people contact you to send copies of their books for possible review?
