hmmmm...i own the R rated version on DVD. I still need to watch it all the way through. I'm not sure if there is an unrated version, i haven't seen one at my video store and if there is one they usually carry a copy.

If they don't have one now, I imagine they will before too much longer. It probably annoyed the hell out of Barker to cut stuff out in the first place. He seems a likely directorial candidate to jump on the "unrated" bandwagon.
Hmm, that's strange - I distinctly remember the chains pulling Frank apart when I saw the movie - oh yeah, that was so long ago I guess I saw it on vhs! I didn't realize that they cut stuff when they put it on DVD - how odd! Considering the gore that's in the Hostel-type movies, I find it very strange indeed that they would cut anything from Hellraiser. I guess that must have been in a quainter time...
yeah since the MPAA is kind of an arbitrary group and ratings are based on opinions, times have changed. What was once R is usually PG or PG-13 now. Do they still use PG-13?
films are being cut when they are transferred to DVD despite the content. i just picked up john huston's the dead, based on the james joyce short story, and i noticed about 10-15 minutes had been cut from the first act. really pissed me off. i'll make some inquiries at amoeba about various hellraiser editions on DVD. i am pretty sure i recently saw a fairly new director's cut at one of the video stores recently.
I've also noticed this quite a bit lately. I mistakenly bought the R-rated version of Versus (as opposed to the uncut, unrated version) a few nights ago, and it was cut to the point where several scenes were nearly incomprehensible. Not that it was very comprehensible to begin with, but still. I'm wondering why they even bothered to release the cut version, and the only thing I can think of is that it's to make it more palatable to a general audience... Thank god it was on the markdown table for only $3.I also recently picked up Hellraiser on DVD and am now wondering about which version I have - I haven't had a chance to re-watch it yet. It sounds like the cuts are pretty minor though, albeit annoying.
speaking of Barker and unrated DVD's I just bought the Unrated Director's Cut of Midnight Meat Train. Still need to watch it.
it just doesn't make sense to me: if a film like hellraiser or the dead (or countless others) has been released on VHS and audiences loved it, why would a company spend money editing said film before releasing it on DVD??? there's no reason i can think of to warrant the expense of editing. and you KNOW someone like clive barker, who has already established his reputation, has little need or desire to snivel up to his distribution company and release a soft version of hellraiser.fuck!!!!!
don't take artistic freedom for granted, kidz...
I actually saw Hellraiser 2 in the theater when it was first released - and now I'm wondering which version of THAT I saw! It sure did have the gore, though - I don't know what the heck they would've cut...
i tried to buy Hellraiser 2 at my video store but all they had was a VHS copy and my VCR is not hooked up anymore.
To further note, I have never seen H3, but have seen most of H4 - there's one scene where 2 (new) Cenobites stand themselves on either side of a person, then fuse themselves together INTO the person, to create a new, exciting Cenobite. Gave me the heebie-jeebies.
I have a soft spot in my heart for 3. The massacre at the nightclub is a great scene. Unfortunately, it's pretty much the only one. However, if you were a fan of Dax on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, that actress is the star of the film.

Whatever format it's in is fine with me as long as it's a DVD. Thanks again. My friend and I watched a lot of the Hellraiser movies in middle school and made up names for the Cenobites that didn't have names.
i noticed that there's a new 20th anniversary edition of hellraiser. does anyone know if that is an edited version? it doesn't say on the box...
Back to your question to me, Phillip - RECOMMEND is a strong word - but H4 explains the origin of the box, which is kinda interesting. However, I found the deep space setting of the movie a little weird (like, transposing the Alien idea to the Hellraiser franchise - kind've an odd graft). H3 is probably worth a watch at some point - however, it looks like it verges on torture-porn, so I've avoided it so far...
there was a Hellraiser movie display at my neighborhood video store. The owner tried to sell it to me before he closed on Dec. 31st and it's still in the window. He marked it with a price of (i think) $195. For that kind of money the thing better rip out my soul and make me it's slave!:)

unfortunately, the hellraiser anniversary edition doesn't have a "rating"...
amy,
thanks for your words...still undecided on hellraiser 3 and 4...anyone else? is it worth the effort?
I thought 3 was pretty trashy. It was kind of fun, but the cenobites function more like mindlessly evil horror movie villains. I wouldn't call it torture porn, but there isn't a lot of depth to it. The new cenobites are pretty out there though - I think I remember one of them shooting cds at people out of its mouth?I liked 4 overall - I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the mythology of the first two films. I agree with Amy though, the future deep-space setting seemed a little weird.
I've had the fifth one sitting around for a while, but have never gotten around to watching it. I hear that the rest of the series diverges pretty wildly from the original story.
