RandomAnthony | 14536 comments What have you learned from failure?

1. I've learned not to continue in jobs/professions I really hate, if I can help it, anyway.

2. I've learned that you can keep going to school pretty much forever if you like it. I screwed up both in high school and college and eventually got my crap together and did ok.

3. I've learned that just because you suck at something now doesn't mean you'll never be good at it.

4. I've learned that you really don't know who or where you'll be in a few years. I mean, you'll probably be who/where you'll think you be, but you can't be sure. So be open.

And...you?

I've learned that failure - real or imagined - can be kept at bay temporarily by spending a night at a bar with either: A) a great jukebox, or B) a band of garage avengers onstage willing to drag their amps around and play "Land of 1,000 Dances" to a bunch of lushes, and drinking until they start clicking the lights on and off.

RA, I'm thrilled to see you self-categorizing your threads now. :)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I've learned that it's okay to admit you're wrong, and that if you can, and ask for help, people will not only still LIKE you, they'll be happy to help you learn.

I hope so, anyways, because I just screwed up the Magic Kitten books by making them series, even though they're all by the same author and don't need to be in the series shelves to stay together. As Raina pointed out. Oops.

I've also learned that if you don't get something right the first try, don't give up. Keep trying, and you'll get better. Like when I'm learning a song on the piano. I am NOT a good sight-reader. I learn painstakingly slow. No, don't listen to me practice, please!

David (bowsertheturtle) here and there throughout my education the question has been posed 'what do i regret?' and myself putting anything negative and failure in that i would respond nothing, because my failures, and the times where either did something bad or didnt do something good helped me to become the person i am today.. if i didnt screw up before i wouldnt have taken to heart some of the values that were instilled in me through life.. similarly one time in an english class we read the poem 'what happens to a dream defered' and we talked about it, and i said why does a dream have to be defered, theres more then one way to do things, for myself i have one or two large goals in mind, but they are general, if i cant get them done one way i will be satisfied getting them done another way..

except my failure at college, so far, nothing good has come out of that, im still pissed about it.. but i guess thats because i only partially blame myself, and partially blame others.. i have no problem if all i have to blame is myself, but if someone got in my way, it just makes me feel cheated..

school me in the ways of going to school forever RA, i wouldnt mind that if i could find the money.. i feel like ill never climb out of my mountain of debt..

Mary (madamefifi) I learned not to drink and drive and make illegal left turns at 2AM after I failed that Breathylizer back in aught-one (don't worry, folks, my lawyer got it reduced to a "reckelss"). Seriously, I have been known to take a 45-mile cab ride rather than drive after I've had a few drinks. I also learned that the shame, fear and depression one experiences after failing goes away in a day or two.

Angie (angabel) Misha wrote: "I learned that if you don't try, you can't fail. Voila! No more pesky failure."

Haha.

In those cases, you also don't learn... It's a tough call.

I've learned that sometimes, when you fail, you just have to keep failing harder.

Sometimes failing is amazing and you will thank someone for failing you (in my case, literally).

Sometimes it's not failure so much as there was a success that was bigger than what you were trying for.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments You would not believe how much excitement my Magic Kittens mistake has stirred up. Hahahahaha!!!

A Summer Spell #1 (Magic Kitten) by Sue Bentley
I sent out word to everyone in youth services about my mistake, with apologies and instructions on what to do about it.

Since then:
I now know that Donna in computer services has a cat that just had kittens, and her daughters will want to read the books. I know that taking off the series stickers is a pain in the butt, and removes a lot of the sparkles on the cover. And I now know that there are also Magic Puppies and Magic Ponies series books, too. Whew!

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments slinks home, disappointed that Magic Kittens are not a series

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments RA, they ARE a series, just not a series that needs a special sticker. They're ALREADY special enough without that. :)

:::hugs RA reassuringly, gives him a lollipop:::

message 11: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments takes lollipop, watches the confusing librarian with suspicion

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments See, if the books in a series have a different author, like, say, the American Girl books (Tripp, Shaw, Moss, etc.) we put a series sticker on them, and shelve them by the SERIES name in the series shelves. So they're all together.

But, if the books are all by the same author, we don't need to do that. They're going to BE together on the shelves anyways. Less work for staff that way, too.

So, I made a mistake. What we have here, in this instance, are books all by the same author. No series sticker needed. Just lots of apologies to the confused staff, and to the confused professor in Wisconsin...

Mary (madamefifi) Magic Kittens.

I just like saying that. Magic Kittens, Magic Kittens, Magic Kittens.....

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments :::joins Mary:::

Magic Kittens, Magic Kittens, Magic Kittens....

And do I have a great job, or what? :)

message 15: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ooh, Mary's right. "Magic Kittens" is fun to say.

message 16: by Joe (new)

Joe (attometer) I've learned that failure is not a permanent condition. You *can* start over/ask (and get) forgiveness/hide it at the bottom of the trash can and call out for pizza.

Dario | 63 comments :::Joins Mary, RA, and Jackie:::
Magic Kittens, Magic Kittens, Magic Kittens...

I agree it is fun to say.

message 18: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Define failure.

When I come up against something I'm unable to do, I don't call it failure, I call it practice.

Forever the optimist? You betcha!

Yeah, I get that a lot. Especially from my wife, whose attitude is a full 180 degrees from my own.

message 21: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) No disrespect intended, I assure you, Phil.

Phil | 11837 comments Would it help if I said "magic kittens?"

I picture a magic kitten looks something like this.

message 23: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) That's perfect. Now you're just like the rest of us.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Ooh, cool, Phil!
Magic kittens, magic kittens, magic kittens, magic kittens... :)
