I guess when I don't read about the Supreme Court, I read about Detroit!

message 2764: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Started A Brief History of Seven Killings but realized I wasn't really up to the task right now (about 700 pages), so went with Visitation Street

message 2766: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Starting The Night Birds tonight

message 2767: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Started Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person on audio. From the Goodreads reviews it is apparently a love it or hate it book. I'm a big fan of Shonda Rimes' shows, so wanted to give it a try. She reads the book and I find her delightful to listen to so far.

message 2768: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) I loved that Shonda Rimes book. Stumbled across it accidentally but was so glad I read it. I admit though that somewhere in my brain I have enmeshed Shonda Rimes with Dr. Miranda Bailey and envisioned her when I was reading.

She does write this book in exactly the same tone as Grey's. The whole book could easily be one of the monologues at the beginning of an episode.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Started Before the Fall on iPad and Oracle Night on audio.

message 2771: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Started The Goldfinch last night. I don't have a book to read for our August book group, so I figured that would give me some time to get through this one.

Once I started that one, Betsy, I didn't want to put it down. I hope you enjoy it.

Bill | 12 comments In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood has been on my reading list for a long time. Last night, it came down to this and Oryx and Crake (Margaret Atwood). I've read a bit this morning and have enjoyed it so far.

Did you also read Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief? I'll never see another Tom Cruise movie after that one!

I think I read that one about 1-1/2 years ago. I meant to say in my review of this one that Dad Miscavige's whole problem was that he wasn't Tom Cruise!

Bill | 12 comments Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
My 10-year-old daughter has started reading the series and wants me to read it again so that we can discuss. :)

message 2781: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I picked up Red State, Blue State, Rich State, Poor State: Why Americans Vote the Way They Do at the library tonight. I'm a bit of a political junkie so I find it fascinating. It's written by statisticians so it is very data-heavy and wonk-y, but it's pretty easy to skim through if you don't like that.

message 2783: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Also started The Sympathizer for my book group.

Vanessa | 17 comments Greetings all. I've been in school, it's been a while since I posted or read for pleasure (and my cold dead fingers is how I feel about reading these days.)

I'm always behind the trends, so I just started Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. I want to check out that non-fiction book of Linda's though.

Vanessa,

Are you following me? The book is available through the Ohio e-book project so as long as you have an Ohio Library card, you can get this book. AFTER I'm finished with it. ;)

message 2791: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 17 comments Haha. I'm not following you intentionally. Or AM I?

(I do get notifications when you post here and I always think, I want to participate. So, yeah I guess I'm busted :)

I do have a Columbus library card, and an Upper Arlington, Grandview, and Westerville one as well (because Columbus is ridiculous that way.) I've never checked out their e-books, but I'll give it a whirl.

So far, I'm liking it. There are some elements of The Girl on the Train. Unreliable narrator, British, etc. but what is different is that it starts with the main character waking up in the hospital not knowing what happened or how she got there, and then it goes back and forth in time with her trying to remember.

message 2793: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Started In the Unlikely Event on audio

message 2794: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Started Blacklands. I went to the beach on Friday and it was too sunny to read my iPad, so I needed a print book. This was on top of my bedside table, so it was the one.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Started A Man Called Ove on audio. Everyone seems to love this book and it does seem enjoyable so far. But I'm a little annoyed by how curmudgeonly he is portrayed and he is only 59. I've never met a 59 year old who is this computer illiterate and cranky, but maybe things are different in Sweden.
