Cathy Connolly (twitter97crush) | 9 comments Hello everyone! I'm Cathy "If I Should Die Before My Dog -- " by Joe Connolly
My husband and I wrote the book. Looking forward to being in the group and learning what ever I can in Goodreads!

message 108: by Kim (new)

Kim (booksbulldogs) Hi Cathy,

I've marked your book as a "want to read" :) It's an uncomfortable topic but something I should look into. We have plans somewhat worked out for "in the event of...." but it would be best to have something firm / in writing....

message 109: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Connolly (twitter97crush) | 9 comments Hello Kim,

Actually, if you go to Amazon and look inside the book you'll see that the best part of it is being able to tell the story of our dogs lives, I really enjoyed filling in our kids books (you write in the information). It reminds you of so many wonderful things! And if they never need their book, we have a wonderful keepsake of the time we shared with them. And it is a comfort knowing that everything anyone would need to know is written down. It is a difficult topic I do agree! But also a very important one for their sake.

Helene | 10 comments finally my notifications are working :D
Hiya Gayle sweetie :D

message 111: by Helene (new)

Helene | 10 comments Love the idea of your book Cathy :D We generally don't think of what will happen to our pets if anything unforseen should happen to us.
Mine are well provided for and it was something I put a lot of thought into.. having three dogs I had to think about it.. The Labradors would be no problem Mumsie and Pops would take those, but My baby Boy Mouse, not so much.. at 80KGS and 33ins he is a lot of dog :D He is a spoilt pup as well .. and I am really fussy about what they eat, grooming and so on.
I am really lucky though if anything happened to me Mouse would return to his breeder who would then find another family for him to live with, that would keep up the level of living he is used to.. he has his own bank account to pay for vet treatment and his food and personal care. and although we don't like to think about it, it is a really good idea I think to leave clear precise instructions on what your dog likes and dislikes, what stresses him/her and what comforts them. I mean how else would anyone know that my big scary dog is really a big baby who likes to fall alseep listening to teddy bears picnic whilst sucking my thumb :D

message 112: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Connolly (twitter97crush) | 9 comments Thanks Helene! I know, our pets have all those little personal traits that make them individuals. that's one of the reasons we thought the book would be so important for them.
WHO would think that listening to teddy bears picnic and sucking mom's thumb would be a night time routine :) love it!!
Glad you have a plan, so many don't and they do need one just like our children do~

Amy Shojai (amyshojai) | 4 comments Hey there, glad to find this book (I followed Cathy over...not stalking, no! *s*). Put her book on my TBR list.

I have a 7 year old smart aleck German Shepherd (and a 16 year old Siamese wannabe who bosses him around). Pets are my passion, glad to find a group of like-minded folks. Oh, I've written a number of pet books, too, heavily into the sequel of my dog-viewpoint thriller series so may not be able to check in as often as I'd like.

message 119: by Gayle (new)

Gayle | 51 comments I need to get your book, Cathy. It may be a difficult subject to think about and difficult to entertain the thoughts of making preparations but it is the responsible thing to do. I live my life being a responsible dog mom, so it is a requirement of me to make sure that they are going to be well taken care of in the event that I'm unable to do so. They deserve no less. My four furkids are the loves of my life and I will see to it that there is a plan in place. I will be purchasing your book. Thank you.

It is hard to think about I agree, and as you said it is part of being a responsible dog mom. Our kids godmom feels better too, she's glad it's all written down!

Cathy Connolly (twitter97crush) | 9 comments Hi Amber!
Love the pictures of your kids! LOL you pass out treats to OPD's whata great visitor you are, and they all KNOW what you have in your pocket!
At this point I don't know if I could live without a dog in the house, it would be very hard.
I'll have to take a look at your novels! Just finished one today "ItsJustaDog" what a wonderful book by Russ Ryan. Stop by and take a look at ours too, If I Should Die Before My Dog.
Have a good evening Amber!

message 125: by Genie (new)

Genie Gabriel | 1 comments Hello, everyone! I'm new to Goodreads and feeling really ignorant as I learn my way around. So finding a dog lovers group was wonderful! I'm currently owned by seven furbabies. Nice to see others have herds of doggies too! My crew is a mix of shelter alumni and doggies who needed a home for one reason or another. They are also a mix of breeds--Collie, Cocker Spaniel, miniature Pinscher, Border Collie/Lab, Rottweiler/Shepherd, Pitbull/Jack Russell Terrier, and a guest doggie--a Chihuahua mix who is staying with with my herd until her people can get resettled to a place that's dog friendly. I also practice animal Reiki and communicate with animals. I haven't written a book that's specifically about dogs, but pets usually find their way into my stories--just like they find their way into my "real" life. I'm looking forward to adding some dog-related books to my bookshelf!

David Bell (davidefcbell) | 4 comments Hi, I'm David Bell,

The dog in my life is 700 years old.

Most dog lovers have heard of Gelert the legendary wolfhound, but if you don't, it's a sad story! I remember being 6 years old and crying my eyes out at Gelert's Grave in North Wales. Well, about 3 years ago, I decided to change Gelert's fate, and you can find out what I wrote at:

Stewart McFarlane (mcfarlane) | 22 comments “The domestic dog is an ancient companion of humans, and it is possible that domestication was taking place as we ourselves were emerging as a separate species. This helps us understand the close and symbiotic relationship between dogs and humans. I think it is reasonable to say that our attitude to animals and to nature is part of what defines us as humans. When we are in harmony with nature and treat other species with respect, we elevate ourselves as human beings. I believe this is a spiritual and ethical matter. Of course, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, and many indigenous and ancient religions endorse this attitude, but I think it applies whatever your personal belief system. Respect for nature and kindness to animals are, I believe, fundamental human values, just as respect for and kindness to other people should be. I hope that the stories which follow help to illustrate that belief as it is actually lived, and hopefully, does so in an entertaining way.”

Of Mice and Zen. Animal Encounters in the Life of a Wandering Buddhist
by Stewart McFarlane (Goodreads Author)

Published Sept 2013.Preview sample chapters are available on my Goodreads Author page, to download.
Full book available on Amazon (Kindle) or in EPub format from my website:
http://www.taichi-exercises.com

I live in Thailand where I rescue and train dogs and volunteer in an elephant sanctuary and write books. I have a German Shepherd and a rescued street dog who is Thai Ridgeback/German Shepherd mix.

The book is an autobiographical account of my life with animals. It has a Buddhist/Taoist/Hindu orientation. It emphasizes the need for humane treatment of our domestic animals and protection of wild ones. I believe that respecting and caring for animals makes us more fully human. It includes discussion of humane training, and meditating with your dog, as a way of bonding and improving non verbal communication. The animals include: elephants, dogs (many chapters), monkeys, water-buffalo, snakes, sea-lions, cats, sharks and many more.

Gayle | 51 comments Sounds like a heartwarming and enlightening read from another animal / dog lover. I'm in Canada but my youngest son just married a lovely young lady from Malaysia where they currently reside. He is in your neck of the woods ( relative to where we are ) now. I digress. I have 4 wonderful dogs who make me who I am.

Stewart McFarlane (mcfarlane) | 22 comments Hi Gayle,
Great to hear from you. I hope you go out to Malaysia for visits.Fascinating country. I used to work there, and some of my animal stories are set there, as well as in Thailand.I have posted pics of my dogs and some of their stray friends on the Group photo-board.

David Bell (davidefcbell) | 4 comments Hi dog lovers. I'm giving away three packages of 1x copy of my new, lavishly illustrated edition of 'The Dog Hunters', including 3 signed prints plus a signed piece of original artwork. It's a Goodreads giveaway, for one day only on August 5th, so watch out for it. In a nutshell, 'the Dog Hunters' is a retelling of the classic legend of Gelert the wolfhound as an epic medieval mystery adventure featuring many bizarrely bred dogs. It was already getting great reviews, first as in text only, but now it comes with with over 290 illustrations it's really taking off and is proving VERY popular among dog owners, especially Wolfhound lovers. More info on the book at http://www.davidnbell.com/The_Dog_Hun...

Darren | 1 comments Hello,

My name is Darren. I live in Ottawa, Canada. I of course have an interest in dogs, and actually work as a dog photographer as well. (http://www.darrenboucher.com/)

I just started reading "Old Dogs are the Best dogs" by Gene Weingarten. In the introduction alone I was tearing up and then later laughing out loud. I think it's going to be a good one!

My own dog is a hound mix named Floyd.

message 140: by Holly (new)

Holly (goldikova) Hi,

I'm Holly and I am new here. I live in the US Rustbelt

I have 3 Italian Greyhounds, Spider, Mini & Smoocho, ages 13, 10 and 8. I also have a rescue dog living with me; she appears to be a terrier mix or a toy terrier, so we call her Teetee. She has been with me for two years now and we have not been able to find a forever home for her, so she may stay with me forever.

Denise | 3 comments Hello, I'm Denise. I am new to Goodreads but love this site. I live in Des Moines, Iowa and have done so my whole life. I cannot remember when I began reading but it was probably when I began school. I have never stopped. I would read all day long if I could. I would have many, many more books 'read' if I could remember them all. My favorite book of all time is Time and Again by Jack Finney. I recently splurged and bought a Kindle Fire HDX 8.9. Wow, what a nice reader. I never thought I would use an e-reader but the Kindle is very nice.

Chris Martine | 2 comments Hi,
I'm Chris from Victoria, Canada. I guess I'm quite fascinated with dogs not only as pets but also as working animals, particularly in the past. Sled dogs like Call of the Wild or those Shakelton and Scott exploration books, and then herding dogs. If any of you have particular favourites in this vein, please let me know. I may have run out of the non-fiction books (though you might still surprise me), but I'd love to read some great fiction tales (other than Lassie Come Home!)

message 147: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Forker (jforker) | 8 comments The Story of Edgar Sawtelle ad Racing In The Rain are two good dog reads. But the best dog books I've read lately is How The Dog Became the Dog. It is nonfiction and every thing you need to know about the history and archeology of canines and the coevolution of man and dog.
