The book is about the last human teens on earth trying to survive. They live on a little camp next to the ocean. The leader of the camp loses control and one major law is broken. Their leader is taken by the newly made ruling species and cause a problem that was inevitable. The new species are already agitated at each other but when the text says “yellows fought blues” it shows that the tensions boil over (brindley166). It is external conflict and it causes a war.
The books main character and side characters are all shown well through what they do and it gives a good sense of their personality. One example is when Jon lost a race and he had a look of “damaged pride”(brindley35). This was direct characterization that showed the hubris of this kid. An example of indirect characterizations when the text is talking about the killing of animal as says “you shall do no murder” this shows her commitment to the rules and how she leads with them. The theme is intertwined with characterization. One theme is that hubris kill. The example of this is before the teen raptors attacked them Jon made a noise “rar!” and then the text says “ he blared out at them” he thought he could handle them but he caused the attack. So his over confidence might kill them.
The book was great the author made the story flow well
