Steven (tbones) | 592 comments Yeah I heard something about them making a Little Fockers movie. It figures since my wife and I just found the other 2 on one of those double feature disks.

message 152: by Jess (new)

Jess (jhigg) Hey all :D The Passage sounds interesting... I just finished Parzival for my Arthurian Literature class, which is a very interesting read (though rather hard).

I hope you have/had fun in Times Square, Jenn, and that everything is going alright with the baby/wedding Cici, and that Jen is doing okay! *wipes forehead* I really should stay active here! I miss so much!

message 153: by Cici (new)

Cici Oh, hahha. of course. :)

message 154: by Cici (new)

Cici So yes, I am having a boy baby, I found out yesterday! We really thought we were having a girl, so we were surprised! Brandon's favorite boy name is Achilles and I was totally against it, but I want him to be happy, I know I almost did not get to name my daughter the name I really wanted... and Achilles is kinda growing on me, everyone says I am crazy. lol.

Achilles is a little different, but I get kids with odd names all the time at school . . . Sebby, Guisseppe, Shinistaj, Mahboob (try saying that in front of a group without wanting to giggle!) - honestly all kinds of names. But congrats on a boy. I think that since you didn't get the girl name you wanted, you should get the boy name you do want. Just sayin'.

This will be my last post for about 2 weeks - I am off to Germany, Lichtenstein, Austria, and Switzerland with 30 students from my high school and 2 other chaperones. So I will post in a couple of weeks and I will think of you all, often (probably in the middle of the night when I can't sleep for the nightmares I always have of losing one student in Europe and having to tell her mother that I lost her!!!). I take with me The Help (I am halfway done) and my kindle which has the Passage, Sandstorm, and Pirate Latitudes on it.

message 157: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 592 comments Wow, that sounds like an awesome trip. I wish I was going with you. Take a lot of pictures if you can and post them ... very cool. As for The Passage and Pirate Latitudes, I have both and have read one, and Sandstorm I've not heard of. Who wrote that and whats it about?

message 158: by Cici (new)

Cici Jenn, you will have soo much fun! You will be missed on here!

message 159: by Cici (new)

Cici Sandstorm.. I have that its written by the same guy who wrote judas strain I haven't read it yet but judas strain was pretty good

message 160: by Cici (new)

Cici Okay about the boy name.. I think it may be a baby brady.. I'm hoping achilles is ruled out!

message 161: by [deleted user] (new)

Back from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It was so hot! And there is no air conditioning there, they are green countries (ecologically minded) and usually they do not have temperatures like that at those elevations. I saw a lot and learned a lot (I try not to learn too much on vacation, but I could not help myself), it's always interesting to see world events from a different point of view. Here's a tally of interesting events:

One student swam into the wall at the Olympic Stadium in Munich, receiving a nasty scrape on both the bridge of his nose and upper lip.

Another student had diahrrea for 3 days.

Yet another student climbed a path up a mountain to a castle and got lost coming down, even though there was only one path and it was very well marked. Duh.

In Salzburg, Austria I vistited the Mirabel Gardens where Julie Andrews filmed the "Doe a deer, a female deer" song from The Sound of Music. Some of us die-hard fans even recreated the dance on the fountain edge.

It was hot, but fun. A great experience, and German food rocks. Schnitzel is a great meal, and spaetzle makes me want to bathe in butter and cheese.

Glad you guys were active, anyone heard from Jessica lately?

message 162: by Cici (new)

Cici Wow jenn sounds fun! I love eating from differnt places! I've never had a schnitzel but my friends mom makess them a lot. The students seem like they had an awesome time, lol. Diahrrea for 3 days straight on vacation? Sweet.
Haven't really heard much from anyone on here lately..

message 163: by [deleted user] (new)

Are you guys set on Brady now? I like that name. Very masculine and tough-sounding. Is Achilles officially out of the running?

message 164: by Cici (new)

Cici I hope Achilles is not an option, he's pretty set on Brady. I'm halfway through my pregnancy and my tummy is huge! My ribs are killing me from all the pressure and I cannot imagine getting any bigger,I already look like I'm about to give birth any second but I still have a long way to go!!!! I can't believe there's not 10 in there! I'm sooo uncomfy! How come I thought I loved being pregnant?!?!?

message 165: by Cici (new)

Cici I'm being mean, because of my discomfort. I think it is so amazing that we make little babies and carry them around in our bellies, it's amazing! I love feeling him move and talking to him and wondering what he will look like and what kind of personality he will have. And I'm sure once he's born I will miss being pregnant because the pain, discomfort and the nausea and sleepless nights and restrictions won't seem so bad after it's all done and over.

message 166: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 592 comments hey what ever you do don't watch Manswers until after the kid gets here cause I learned something on there I don't think any pregnant woman should know about their darling little baby boy...oh and it's nothing bad or to be scared about cause as you know us guys are Awesome :o) but it's interesting and remind me to tell you about it afterwards ok .

message 167: by Cici (new)

Cici No, steven I really think u should tell me now.. I can handle it. I've never even heard of manswers. U can't bring up something and not tell its not fair. Anyways, I can't wait that long.

message 168: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 592 comments ok but I will tell you in a message thingy cause I don't know if it's ok subject matter for here.

message 169: by [deleted user] (new)

Haven't heard from you all in so long, are you all ok? I have been very busy with my summer job (I work at a small ceramics studio and boy have we been busy these last 2 weeks!) and haven't had much time to read - when I am home I just want to vedge out and try to sleep. It has been very hot and humid here - not like New Orleans, but for us it has been downright oppressive at times. It makes it hard to sleep.

Cici, how are you doing? I think about you often, wondering if you are able to get comfortable with the weather the way it is. Hugs and kisses(in a totally non-creepy way).

message 170: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 592 comments Hey Jenn, Wow I didn't know you were into ceramics. That's pretty awesome. What do you do in your shop? Do you actually make/create stuff or sell supplies for doing that type of work? My sister used to make a love of stuff back when she lived in Texas a long time ago. Are you familar with making molds for things at all?
As for reading, I am just about done reading Teeth. I am milking it cause I love the book so much I don't want it to end...ever. It's so exciting and I've learned a lot of interesting facts that are within the story as well. This book is one heck of a great conversation piece and I highly recommend it. Within all the action/adventure it does have the love/relationship side to it as well. Timothy James Dean worked his brain off on this title.

Well I'll talk at ya all later...have a great day :o)

message 171: by Cici (new)

Cici Hello all!
This summer has been pretty fun! Next weekend we will be going up north again to play on the water and I'm definetly looking forward to it!
I've been keeping cool, either indoors in the air or finding someway to water, lol.
We went to a wave pool yesterday and it was so much fun, they even had a relaxing "lazy river" and a huge splash zone for the kids to play in.
I miss you all, no one really comes on here much anymore, everyone must really be enjoying their summer!!! :)

message 172: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 592 comments Hey Cici, where did you go to this water park? I've gone to a few in different places before. They are pretty kick butt. We had one back when I lived on Long Island New York, and I've been to the one in California and in San Antonio Texas before. I really like the lazy river thing. They need one of those in Vegas with a waitress or waiter that can bring you drinks as you float around :o)

message 173: by Cici (new)

Cici We went to this place called red oaks they also have the same thing in cedar point, sandusky ohio thtas actually better and at the one in cedar point they do have a swim up bar and u can also take ur drinks in the hot tub. It would be awesome to have some drinks on the lazy river though. We went around and around and I actually thought about how sweet it would be if they served the adults drinks. Sometimes I thinks I have more fun then the kids at these places. I know on our way there I was more excited to be going than they seemed to be.

message 174: by Cici (new)

Cici And I couldn't even drink or go down the waterslides!

We make, create, and teach. We do not make molds, but we cast them. I am mostly in charge of doing the painting/creating custom orders and store samples as well as a fair share of the teaching. I have so many orders for finished pieces, I don't hardly know what to do! Just plow through them and hope I catch up before I have to go back to teaching in September.

Cici wrote: "We went to this place called red oaks they also have the same thing in cedar point, sandusky ohio thtas actually better and at the one in cedar point they do have a swim up bar and u can also take ..."

We used to go to this place in Shelby Township called Four Bears Waterpark - I used to work for a summer camp for homeless kids and we would take the kids there for their last field trip - they had such a blast - there were bumper boats, paddle boats, a big pool with a water slide - the kids (ok, me too) had a blast! They closed 5 or 6 years ago.

But I think there is a place over in Muskegon area with a great water park. Right now I have to settle for a trip to Metro Beach (a Metropark beach on Lake St. Clair) or a trip to my bathtub. Cici, have you been to Metro Beach lately?

message 177: by Cici (new)

Cici Yeah I've been to four bears whn I was little. I thought they closed it down. Tat was nice what u did for tose kids. I just went to metro beach last weekend my daughtr insisted to go in the lake. I would've prefered to go in they're pool because the water was stinky and kinda gross looking. We usually like to swim in lake huron or bear lake is the best, but far away.

message 178: by Cici (new)

Cici Jenn next time u should spend the day at red oaks its 13 mile between dequinder and john r. It was more fun than metro but more money too.

I just might give this a try. Sounds like fun. It's supposed to be hot again next week, so maybe my nieces would like to go be obnoxious at the water park!

There is a third generation kindle coming out on August 27 - I am really jealous because I bought kindle 2 for myself for Christmas, and although I love it I always like to have the latest gadgets! I will have to wait for kindle 4, though, because I just don't have the budget. Waaaaahhhh! Thanks for listening.

message 181: by Cici (new)

Cici I don't have any of the lastest gadgets.. jennifer was kind enough to borrow me her ebook :) I kinda like owning the actual book though because I borrow them out so often. I like my books to get good use out of them. I always want to read them again but I always have something else to read. I hope my kids love to read when they get older because I have a ton of books.

message 182: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Joag | 2 comments Is the Kindle really good? I mean, do you all really like it? I can't wrap my head around not being able to handle and feel a book while I'm reading it. I can grasp it somewhat as a convenience, especially if the book is large and heavy. But books to me have their own personality that we as readers add to, just by reading it and turning the pages. A little bit of our personal impressions are left on each page.
I have been tossing around the idea of getting a Kindle.. I will have to think about it some more. Any thoughts?

message 183: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 592 comments I have had people show me the Kindle and another competitor called The Nook which I find might be even better and it's about 200 bucks but it comes with lifetime 3G coverage and has wifi. You can store books on a chip or load them from your home or laptop computer. Plus you can change the font sizes which makes it great for people having to strain their eyes for a long period of time.
My advise is to shop around and don't get this so you stop buying regular books, use this as a way to decide what books you want to own for future reading and rereading. I love my hardcovers and paperbacks as well and have had a hard time thinking about switching over but for economical reasons it does work and I would get to read more books this way.

message 184: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Joag | 2 comments You're right Steven...in the long run, for economical reasons, it is the best way to go, and enables you to read multiple books at once.
For now, I use "Paperback Swap" and that has been working out for me.

I shopped around a lot and I preferred the Kindle because there were many more selections than for the Nook. I also was able to get it at for less than the Nook. The books are 9.99, so in the long run, for hardcovers it is cheaper, however, sometimes at Barnes and Noble I can find a hardcover on the bargain shelf for 5.00, so I will pick that up instead. The reason I bought this was because I was cleaning out my closets last year and was horrified at the number of books cluttering up shelves. I was able to donate some, but all that paper was wasted!! I bought and read the books and they sat in boxes - a horrible waste! I also belong to PaperbackSwap.com for the ones that the school or senior center cannot take, but it was my committment to recycling more and using less that actually persuaded me to make the change.

As for the physical feel of the book in your hands, I thought it might be difficult, too, but it turns out I can enjoy the ereader just as much, it really is the character and the story, not the pages. It's just like when I was in college and PC's first came out. I thought I would never be able to write essays and research papers sitting at a computer instead of physically writing it out on a legal pad and then "typing" it, but I was amazed at how easy it was to switch.

Just my 2 cents . . .

message 186: by Cici (new)

Cici So I heard that the barnes and noble franchise is closing their stores because of all these electronic books and places like amazon.com. Its sad. I love books.

message 187: by Cici (new)

Cici I do like the ebook because it holds so many books, its light and I love how you can change the font size and u don't. Have the book clutter. But I love books because it can be a great conversation starter when u see someone reading a book that uve read or have an interest in. And I love borrow my books and borrowing books from other people.

message 188: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 592 comments I have to agree with Cici on the borrowing and conversation piece thing. But at least the ebook thing can bring down the clutter so it isn't clutter and becomes a conversation piece once again. I love the borrowing and lending thing though cause it sparks so many great talks and friendships as well. Books help keep us socializing.

message 189: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 592 comments my question about the Kindle is, does it come with a lifetime 3G network or any type of wifi to download books into it? I have noticed more books coming out for the Kindle. So what are the advantages other than that? The Nook can open PDF files and can have books downloaded via 3G wifi and a home or laptop computer.

message 190: by [deleted user] (new)

Steven wrote: "my question about the Kindle is, does it come with a lifetime 3G network or any type of wifi to download books into it? I have noticed more books coming out for the Kindle. So what are the advantag..."

Kindle 2 has 3G for life, and the new one you can get either Wi-Fi or 3G plus Wi-Fi. The only Wi-Fi is cheaper by $50. Kindle 3 is smaller than Kindle 2, but still has the same screen size. There are more fonts and darker fonts (not an issue for me, but maybe for older people??). It's also nice because amazon will keep your ebooks for you, so you can organize them at amazon.com and not take up PC memory. I know my kindle holds over 1500 books, but I only like the ones I am reading or to read to be on it. Go figure. It's the same part of me that hates dusting. Kindle also has text-to-speech for the car - love it this is how I am going to finish The Passage this fall, back and forth to work - does Nook have that? I don't know if Kindle can open PDF files, but it can Word docs so I would think PDF would be enabled too.

message 191: by [deleted user] (new)

Cici - feeling ok? We miss you.

Nobody has posted on The Passage lately, what's the skinny?

message 192: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 592 comments Wow Jenn you might have me sold on the Kindle now. I did see the Nook and thought it seemed pretty cool but I don't know if it has everything you listed. My wife's friend had it with her at a party we went to. Also I have seen more books coming out for the Kindle than the Nook. If it can hold PDF/Word files that would be great too. I also like the text to speech thing as well, very cool. I just have to find a store that has different ebook devises out on display that I can compare with. I like to try things out so maybe if a site had a 30 day trial or something that might help as well.

message 193: by Cici (new)

Cici Hi guys! I'm on my way home from spending a long weekend upnorth, it was a lot of fun! Now back to life. How are you guys doing? Anyone doing anything fun lately??

Count me in! I am new to Facebook, but my full name is Jennifer Mies, same dog picture!

message 196: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 592 comments Thank you Jenn, I'll send you a friend add thingy and then from there hook you up with my wife's page.
What ever you do watch out for that Farmville stuff on Facebook. It could seriously take time away from your reading...oh and Restaurant City is another bad one too.

message 197: by Cici (new)

Cici I used to play all those games on facebook farmville and yovillle and s.l. and fashionbattle and it took up so much time. I finally quit them all.

message 198: by Cici (new)

Cici Steven, ur wifes cakes are awesome. She has some serious talent. The beach smore cake was one of my fav. Could u eat the seashells? They all were pretty incrediable. She should definetly do something with that talent. I bet she loves thos cake shows like the cake boss.

message 199: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 592 comments Cici, the beach smores cake was a really cool one and the shells were all made of chocolate and were hand painted with some type of colored melting chocolates. She likes to make the cake 100% edible which is great since there won't be anything left and everyone will have had something to eat. She is pretty talented, she also does a lot of other crafty things like scrapbooking and she has done a bit of painting which I thought was good but you know how artists are, always critical of their work, so she thinks her painting is not so great. She does watch a lot of the cake challenge shows and the Cake Boss is one of our favorites. She has also enjoyed watching the Cupcake Wars show as well. She is getting ready to do a wedding cake for a friend's daughter next. I think this is going to be her biggest project so far.

message 200: by Cici (new)

Cici I love to do the arts and craft stuff too, but I've really fallen out of it. I bought a scrapbook and never even started it but I love to admire other peoples art and creativity. I'm sure somewhere down the road when I have more time, maybe when the kids are old enough to do their own thing and I have more time on my hands I can keep myself busy by getting back into it and maybe putting together a scrapbook or painting or even writing! I haven't felt very creative lately, well in a very long time. Id love to see the wedding cake pic. I'm having my mom make my wedding cake, she is also a talented baker :)
