Gina (ginrobi) | 84 comments Congrats, Cindy and Carolyn! Way to go! How you both managed to finish 144 inside of six months... I bow to you!

message 1452: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginrobi) | 84 comments I just finished The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz, and The Gunslinger by Stephen King, would make books #62 & 63 respectively. I'm trying! Don't know if I'll reach 144 by the end of this year, but it won't be for the lack of trying!

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Congrats Cinday and Carolyn--did you go down and post your finishes in the "I'm Finished" folder?

I did. I'm waiting until the end of the month to cut and paste the whole list for my June reading though, so I doesn't show on my thread.

what you could do is move your thread to the finished folder. Got to your thread. press edit next to your title and it will ask you what folder you want it to be in and then confirm finished folder

message 1456: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Thanks Afsana.

message 1457: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) no worries

message 1458: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I'm about to start book # 100

Shay | 330 comments It's almost the middle of the year. If you don't think you'll reach 144 books this year, read this article and cheer up: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2007/...

To summarize the article:
1. One in four Americans did not read a book in the past year (of the poll.)
2. The average number of books read by all Americans is 4.
3. The average number of books read by people who actually read a book is 7.
4. The median number of books read was nine for women and five for men.

So, don't give up, even if you end the year short of 144.

message 1460: by Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (new)

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) I just finished #75 A Knight in Shining Armor...I'm working on #76 Queen Takes King: A Novel & #77 Grave Peril...

message 1461: by [deleted user] (new)

Shay, that's just sad! The highest number mentioned was nine. I can't imagine myself only reading nine books in a year. Even when I used to watch TV a lot, I still read more than that.

i never got called about that poll!! I feel neglected...lol!!

the problem is that any of those polls, Gallup, AP etc have only a certain number of people they call - its usually like 10k and then only people who are on a database that they have (one of the guys I work with is on it and he gets called all the time)...

so if most of us read the 144 in a year that is at least 35 people who didn't read anything...and we wonder why our country has education issues...(but that is a rant for another time)

message 1463: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) I am guessing that no 2 averages at 4 per american because those of ou who read more not because they actually read 4

message 1464: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 776 comments Mod
yep, but if you think...for this challenge our goal is to read 144 books...if you take that and divide by 4 (the average books read) that is 36 people reading 4 books to read that number...

Dee (austhokie) | 776 comments Mod
i'm at 139 currently but I have 2 books, maybe 3 that I will finish up tonight because they are all at 50% of the way done - still pushing to try and get my 144 before the end of the month...so I can try to do it again in the second half of the year

message 1466: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments wow Dee--now that's a good idea. See if we can get to 288. :oP I'm on board for that one.

you should Ann - you'll have no problem making it...i'm sure i'm probably at 144, but I didn't start tracking my books until Feb, so only have like 9 on my january list

message 1468: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I could try that. Good idea

If you rated your books you could go to your read list and look at the date they were added as read then add them to January. Just a thought for you.

unfortuantely, i lost all my books when I had some fake ones show up and someone else got access to my account when they had bugs a few months back...so they all show like june... :(

s'ok - i'm nearly there anyways! just finished 140

message 1471: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) That sucks, but it is still a bummer!!

I think they polled my husband, my oldest daughter and my middle sister for that.

message 1474: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Well, I know they didn't ask any of my family. If they had, the median number would have been MUCH higher.

My Mum reads 2 or 3 books a day, I read normally 1 to 2 books a day, my daughter is the person who reads the least--she's only 1 a week, but she has a full schedule with 2 kids and a photography business. The grandkids average 2 books a week, and my son-in-law reads (or listens to) 3 or 4 a week. My husband reads too--but until now, he's mostly read technical works. Now that he's retired he plans on starting to read fiction again, since he doesn't have to keep up his technical certifications any more. (He's a scientist.) He says that he is thinking about getting a part time job that requires zero thinking. :o)

message 1475: by Carolyn F. (last edited Jul 01, 2010 02:47PM) (new)

Carolyn F. He could be a Walmart greeter - they hire retired people and I think you just have to say "Good morning - welcome to Walmart" or "Good afternoon - welcome to Walmart".

message 1476: by Marianne (new)

Marianne Stehr | 35 comments Ugh, I only read 7 books in June!!! What happened. I thought the summer would provide me tons of reading time

message 1477: by Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (new)

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) I just finished #79 Need

message 1478: by Shay (new)

Shay | 330 comments @Marianne, I guess you're having the slump that I was. I don't even have the excuse of beautiful weather, it was 109 this weekend.

message 1479: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wldinnis) I just finished #78 Summer Sisters by Judy Blume. The fact that I can't sleep at night because of my pregnancy seems to be working in my favor.

ohhh, how is summer sisters? I'm using that for a challenge on another thread, I've only read the first couple pages, but I remember enjoying Judy Blume growing up

I officially just finished 144 - Very Valentine

now working on 145 - The River In Winter and trying to finish 146 Case Histories: A Novel (i've had this one in progress for ages, so I need to finish it).

I have to work all weekend (12 hour shifts Saturday and Sunday) - so i'm trying to break 150 by the end of those

message 1481: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wldinnis) Summer Sisters was very good, a quick read (I read it in 8-9 hours).

If you average a book a day, you will beat it tidily.
I believe that a book a day is better for your mind and more fun than an apple a day.

can't I have both? (wails pitifully!!)

message 1485: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnasmith) | 124 comments If you're real nice, we'll let you have two of both. Although, now that it's summer, I'm reveling in fresh berries instead of apples. Nothing like curling up with a great story and a bowl of berries with a side of chocolate.

message 1486: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 776 comments Mod
that is true...or grapes...I love all fruit!! lol!!

message 1487: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnasmith) | 124 comments grapes are good as well but I stick to the fresh berries in the summer when I can get them picked ripe and sweet.

message 1488: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments aahhh fresh fruit. I need to get over to the local Farmer's Market pronto. Be back in a bit with some fresh fruit in hand. :o)

message 1489: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I'm in one of those restless bored moods so even though I'm at the shore and can read or go to the beach. I'm at the house, who is sleeping (napping) who is setting up a pool, who is on the deck reading and who went to the beach. Me I can't get comfortable doing reading so decided to do my online stuff (otherwise I would be picking on something I shouldn't be)because tonight we might be playing Wii with the whole family here. But I left Bel Canto home and bought down Blow out by Coutler. It's good but just not in the reading state of mind.

Thanks for posting this Shay, it does make me feel better since I am reading my 56th book and listening to my 57th.

message 1491: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnasmith) | 124 comments YA books that I like are
PC Cast's House of Night series,
Rick Riordan's- Percy Jackson and the Olympians series,
Julie Kenner's Soccer Mom series,
and Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series.
They all are fairly good action fantasy stories that are great relaxation.
I can really identify with having time when you need to
Not Think but there are too many good books out there to put up with drivel.

message 1492: by Ann aka Iftcan (last edited Jul 04, 2010 12:04PM) (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments lol Michelle. I too read to "forget" when there is a great deal of, um, well, let's just call it "drama".

And I'm trying to pace myself with the The Last Olympian series. Of course, my grandkids are snarling at me to "read faster" because they want the books for themselves. :o)

Oh, and if you want a light read that requires no thinking and is amusing--try some of Shelly Laurenston's Pride and/or Pack series.

I just finished up 148 for my goal of reading 288 by the end of the year...I'd been working on this one for a while...it was interesting but convoluted because there were multiple story lines...can't say i'd recommend it though...Case Histories: A Novel by Kate Atkinson

message 1494: by Donna (new)

Yeah, I think there's only been a handful books in my life that I didn't finish once I started. The book has to be pretty uninteresting to get where I can't force myself through. Hope you enjoy Riordan's Olympian series.

message 1496: by Julie (new)

Julie | 171 comments I thought that summer would be the time when I would get a lot of reading done, but I was totally wrong! I have only read 53 books. I am in a reading slump... I have 6 or 7 books started right now, but I am getting nowhere with them. Hopefully this slump ends soon!! I really need to get moving or I am NOT going to get finished!

message 1497: by Julie (new)

Julie | 171 comments Shay, I just read the article you posted... it did make me feel better!!! 53 is definitely better than 0!!! Thanks for the encouraging words!!! :)

message 1498: by Carlie (new)

Carlie Van Amerongen (carlievana) I only have 27 books read so far... I thought I'd be able to get more done once school let out, but I haven't exactly been ripping through my reading list. I need to get off this site and get moving!

message 1499: by Keri (new)

Keri Neal (kerineal) The year started out strong for me, but now I am WAY behind at 52 books. I have a rhythm going now so I'm hoping to catch up. As long as I average 4 books per week from here on out I'll be fine! Right...

message 1500: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wldinnis) I have already finished 83 books and am about 50 pages from the end of #84 Savor the Moment by Nora Roberts. Since I am so uncomfortable waiting for this baby to come I haven't been able to do much but read!
