I just finished The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz, and The Gunslinger by Stephen King, would make books #62 & 63 respectively. I'm trying! Don't know if I'll reach 144 by the end of this year, but it won't be for the lack of trying!

what you could do is move your thread to the finished folder. Got to your thread. press edit next to your title and it will ask you what folder you want it to be in and then confirm finished folder

To summarize the article:
1. One in four Americans did not read a book in the past year (of the poll.)
2. The average number of books read by all Americans is 4.
3. The average number of books read by people who actually read a book is 7.
4. The median number of books read was nine for women and five for men.

So, don't give up, even if you end the year short of 144.

Shay, that's just sad! The highest number mentioned was nine. I can't imagine myself only reading nine books in a year. Even when I used to watch TV a lot, I still read more than that.

i never got called about that poll!! I feel neglected...lol!!

the problem is that any of those polls, Gallup, AP etc have only a certain number of people they call - its usually like 10k and then only people who are on a database that they have (one of the guys I work with is on it and he gets called all the time)...

so if most of us read the 144 in a year that is at least 35 people who didn't read anything...and we wonder why our country has education issues...(but that is a rant for another time)

yep, but if you think...for this challenge our goal is to read 144 books...if you take that and divide by 4 (the average books read) that is 36 people reading 4 books to read that number...

i'm at 139 currently but I have 2 books, maybe 3 that I will finish up tonight because they are all at 50% of the way done - still pushing to try and get my 144 before the end of the month...so I can try to do it again in the second half of the year

If you rated your books you could go to your read list and look at the date they were added as read then add them to January. Just a thought for you.

unfortuantely, i lost all my books when I had some fake ones show up and someone else got access to my account when they had bugs a few months back...so they all show like june... :(

I think they polled my husband, my oldest daughter and my middle sister for that.

Well, I know they didn't ask any of my family. If they had, the median number would have been MUCH higher.

My Mum reads 2 or 3 books a day, I read normally 1 to 2 books a day, my daughter is the person who reads the least--she's only 1 a week, but she has a full schedule with 2 kids and a photography business. The grandkids average 2 books a week, and my son-in-law reads (or listens to) 3 or 4 a week. My husband reads too--but until now, he's mostly read technical works. Now that he's retired he plans on starting to read fiction again, since he doesn't have to keep up his technical certifications any more. (He's a scientist.) He says that he is thinking about getting a part time job that requires zero thinking. :o)

now working on 145 - The River In Winter and trying to finish 146 Case Histories: A Novel (i've had this one in progress for ages, so I need to finish it).

I have to work all weekend (12 hour shifts Saturday and Sunday) - so i'm trying to break 150 by the end of those

If you average a book a day, you will beat it tidily.

I'm in one of those restless bored moods so even though I'm at the shore and can read or go to the beach. I'm at the house, who is sleeping (napping) who is setting up a pool, who is on the deck reading and who went to the beach. Me I can't get comfortable doing reading so decided to do my online stuff (otherwise I would be picking on something I shouldn't be)because tonight we might be playing Wii with the whole family here. But I left Bel Canto home and bought down Blow out by Coutler. It's good but just not in the reading state of mind.

YA books that I like are
PC Cast's House of Night series,
Rick Riordan's- Percy Jackson and the Olympians series,
Julie Kenner's Soccer Mom series,
and Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series.
They all are fairly good action fantasy stories that are great relaxation.
I can really identify with having time when you need to
Not Think but there are too many good books out there to put up with drivel.

lol Michelle. I too read to "forget" when there is a great deal of, um, well, let's just call it "drama".

And I'm trying to pace myself with the The Last Olympian series. Of course, my grandkids are snarling at me to "read faster" because they want the books for themselves. :o)


Oh, and if you want a light read that requires no thinking and is amusing--try some of Shelly Laurenston's Pride and/or Pack series.

I just finished up 148 for my goal of reading 288 by the end of the year...I'd been working on this one for a while...it was interesting but convoluted because there were multiple story lines...can't say i'd recommend it though...Case Histories: A Novel by Kate Atkinson

Yeah, I think there's only been a handful books in my life that I didn't finish once I started. The book has to be pretty uninteresting to get where I can't force myself through. Hope you enjoy Riordan's Olympian series.

I have 6 or 7 books started right now, but I am getting nowhere with them. Hopefully this slump ends soon!! I really need to get moving or I am NOT going to get finished!
