Personally I think both Jamie and Clare die at the end of the series. I don't know why but I have it in my head that Jamie dies first and then Clare goes back to her home time. It's the ghost at the beginning of book one that has me thinking this. I wonder if because Clare dies at a different time Jamie can't be with her and has to wait until she dies in her own time?It sort of fits with their "theme" of love enduring separation.

I really did enjoy the Scottish Prisoner, Jennifer, as others have said it gives a better insight on Jamie. I wasn't all that fussed about the Lord John Books, but this was like a cross between The Lord John series and The Outlander series. Very good!
To comment on the relationship between Lord John and Jamie, we all know Jamies is not gay and Lord John doesn't push it, so I do not really understand the feel of being uncomfortable a lot have alluded to.
