Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Okay, I learned to like Pam at least in the books. I started to think about Pam and Eric's relationship. I is pretty clear Pam has the hots for Eric and would love to jump him. So what do you think? Discuss....

message 2: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) Not sure about that. Pam seems (in the books) to like females a LOT. Sookie says that she likes "all types" but whenever Pam is mentioned as dating, it seems to always be a woman. But Sookie also says that the older the vamp gets, the less the sex of their partners seems to matter.

I don't know if Pam really has hots for Eric. I always got the idea she kind of viewed him in the light of a father, an older brother or maybe even just as her Lord. Since she is at least several hundred years old herself, she'd have a similar view on relationships between the Lord and that "looked" to him for protection, money etc.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I think I remember Pam telling Sookie that she was not really interested in men...and that would include Eric. She follows Eric like a devoted sheep (well she is a lot smarter than a sheep...prob smells better too) but I don't think she wants him like that. I do like Pam...and of course I <3 Eric.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I could be wrong. BTW, the director wants Pam to go Lesbian for season 3

message 5: by Ann aka Iftcan (last edited Dec 02, 2009 06:27PM) (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) Well, I've always thought of Pam as bi--with a stronger leaning to Lesbian then hetero. But that might just be the way that I read the character. I think that's why she thinks of Sookie as a friend too. Because they aren't interested in the same sexual partners.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I am really surprised with the whole Sookie/Pam friendship. I wasn't expecting Pam to be that good of a friend for Sookie. By the end of book 9, Pam is almost cordial and friendly and unvampire like towards Sookie. She even jokes around with Sookie. I am not saying that Pam and Sookie are going to be going shopping together and out to dinner and doing each other's hair but she is less hostile.

message 7: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) Pam has always been cool with Sookie. I think because of her long long friendship with Eric she is not in the least intimidated. She has probably seen dozens of Sookies come & go. Pam and Eric are better off as good friends. Pam has had her time with Eric. I think Pam is extremely hot by the way, and would go out with a man or a women depending on what they had that interested her. Eric and Pam have that special, and wonderful bond of being old and trusted friends. It is a relationship many times more valuable than a lover. Lovers come and go. Good friends are always there. Sookie and Eric may be lovers. But Sookie is just a passing amusment for Eric. Pam will be there for him always. Unless he were to turn Sookie. In which case she would loose her Telepathic abilities and be useless to Eric.

message 8: by Starling (new)

Starling Pam and Eric WERE an item. Because Eric is Pam's maker. But at this point they are Lord and Chief Henchman.

Yes Pam loves Eric, but it is the kind of fondness a sister has for an older brother.

message 9: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) Ya know--I've always wondered WHY Eric turned Pam. Ok, I'm weird that way, but I really want to know the back stories for all the "permanent" secondary characters. (Pam, Claudine, Tara etc.) Some of them Charlaine has given us, others we are left to wonder about. And, yeah, I know it happened in the FIRST book, but I still want to know what the back story was on Long Shadow and why his maker wasn't willing to "settle" for the recompense that the Vampire Council ordered Eric to make. Why was Long Shadow so important to him? And what happened after Eric had to kill a second vampire that "looked" to him? Sigh, frustrating to have these questions and NOT get answers. Why doesn't Charlaine give us the backstory on some of these secondary characters in the short stories she writes.

message 10: by Cary (last edited Dec 03, 2009 12:25PM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) Longshadows maker was not satisfied with the payment decission of the council even though Long Shadow got what he deserved. He was the lover of his maker who was also an Indian, and they had a strong relationship. In later stories it acounts for attempts to kill or rip of Eric. It's been so long I can't remember. But one thing for sure Long Shadows maker was in no way satisfied by the money payment. Longshadow had been, and still was a seious love interest of his.
As for Pam in the books she was in no way mistreated by Eric. He regarded her as a competent friend and ally. When he opened Fangtasia Pam did not have much going on. Eric offered her a position by his side in Lousiana where he was a Sheriff. So Eric actually hooked up Pam with a good gig. Also in the books Pam is a valued X paramour of Eric, and is very well treated by him. In the TV series they make Eric much more evil and a big jerk. Like the torture of Napoleon, and the selling of Vamp blood. Book Eric would never have done such crap. Pam worked for Eric out of devotion, and she was well repayed and respected by Eric.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I never implied that Pam was mistreated and I like to see more backstory to the the more permanent vampire characters. I think that if Eric turned Sookie, she may not lose her telepathic powers.

message 12: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) By the way I don't think Pam is interested in Eric at all romantically. She just does whatever Eric tells her to do because Eric is her maker, and they have a close relationship. Another reason I like Pam so much. She is sweet and loyal.

message 13: by Starling (new)

Starling Cary, Pam is NOT sweet. She is gritty and loyal.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Okay I been watching Season 2 of Trueblood, I noticed that Eric and Pam speak a foreign language. I am assuming Norse, Swedish? Would he have taught her the language? I don't remember how old Pam is. Is she as old as Eric?

^_^ ~ChReSlyN~ ^_^ (chessie) I think that all makers teach at least one important thing to each of their newborns about themselves to get acquanted.

message 16: by Starling (new)

Starling I don't think Pam is as old as Eric, but I'd have no problems with her understanding any Scandinavian language. I don't know how close the modern languages are to whatever was being spoken there in the year 1000.

Probably a lot closer than Modern English is to Anglo Saxon though. England was still dealing with a major invasion in 1100 and even in 1200. The Scandinavian countries were not.

message 17: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) It could even be Latin, since at the time that Eric was alive (and for several more centuries) that was the "international language of diplomacy". Most of the nobility, the clergy and richer merchants spoke it, so that they could converse with people who didn't always speak their language. After Latin, the next was French. Then it was English. Now its a mix of English, Russian and Mandarin. While the language of science is German. lol, ok, way more info on languages than anyone wanted, right? :o)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) It could be Scandanavian. It sonds like it is. Thank God for subtitles. It was like "Sookie blah blah blah Sooke blah blah blah

message 19: by Angela (new)

Angela (angbens) I just don't get that vibe from the books or the show (the Pam and Eric) thing. I LOVE how the actress on the show portrays her though. She's so funny...

message 20: by Starling (new)

Starling The actress on True Blood is really good. She gets the funny side of Pam. It would be almost impossible to have an actress who is as physically young as the book character play the part. One thing that is very different is that book Pam dresses like a 50s housewife. True Blood Pam has more elegance and style. I like both. They haven't shown True Blood Pam as Sookie's good friend yet, but that could come next year.

Book Pam is amused by Sookie (comes out in the TV show too) but also respects her. But there have been enough books for Pam to get to respect.

message 21: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) Actually I don't think that Pam and Sookie really become "friends" until after poor Eric is mind wiped. The fact that Sookie was able to get the message to Pam without saying that she had Eric AND that she protected him and didn't betray him (despite not being his "blood servant" or anything like that) I think went a long way towards making Pam view her as a reliable ally and potential friend.

Also, I never "saw" Pam as dressing like a 50's housewife. More like a Preppy--or maybe like Elle from Legally Blond. You know, lots of pink, light purples, pale yellows etc. Since Sookie says that Pam is a "pastels kind of gal" at some point, when talking about her being in black at Fangtasia.

Which brings up something that's always bugged me about people's preceptions of the way that vampires dress. WHY THE HECK would a creature that has to hide what it/he/she IS run around dressed like something from the 30's? Bela didn't dress Dracula as he would have been when alive. So why do some people insist that male vamps HAVE to wear tuxes and capes?

message 22: by Starling (new)

Starling Ann, good points. And I totally agree that it was the time of the mind wipe that pulled Pam into Sookie's corner. I think they already liked one another, but couldn't quite figure each other out. And then suddenly they both had light bulb moments.

message 23: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) lol, my comment on people wanting to dress vamps a certain way reminded me that I need to get my copy of The Accidental Vampire back from my daughter. The locals where poor Elvie lived insisted that SHE had to dress like Elvira (hence her nickname) and sleep in a coffin. I LOVED that book.

The Accidental Vampire (Argeneau, #7) by Lynsay Sands

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Not to mix movie with series, the vamps in Twilight don't sleep in coffins. In fact, they don't sleep at all. They aren't affected by the sun like the "typical" vampire or the vampires in True Blood.

message 25: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) I liked the "re-imagining" that was done for that. And I LOVED the "excuse" for not going out into the sun that was used in Twilight. (But HATED the effect they used for the movie. Just looked like he'd gotten a little sweaty, then someone had thrown glitter at him.)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Don't you know Edward is really a fairy. He's fast, strong and sparkles. He just needs the fairy wings and ears and he'll be all set.

^_^ ~ChReSlyN~ ^_^ (chessie) I think tht he'd make an ugly fairy

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) oh I don't know, I think he make a cute fairy.

^_^ ~ChReSlyN~ ^_^ (chessie) I dont really like edward Me luvs Jacob he is HOT!!

message 30: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) I thought that Edward (RPat version) was definately a little, um, well, NOT hot compared to Jacob (Taylor) who was just too delish for words in New Moon. Man, did his trainer do a GREAT job of buffing him up.

message 31: by Megan (new)

Megan Ann wrote: "I thought that Edward (RPat version) was definately a little, um, well, NOT hot compared to Jacob (Taylor) who was just too delish for words in New Moon. Man, did his trainer do a GREAT job of buf..."

It doesn't matter how many muscles he has, he has such a baby face! He's cute, don't get me wrong, but not "manly", lol.

^_^ ~ChReSlyN~ ^_^ (chessie) But not manly???

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I go more for personality. Edward has more personality than Edward. I think we should go back to topic.

^_^ ~ChReSlyN~ ^_^ (chessie) I agree we are way off.

message 35: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) I think Pam was turned by Eric due to her personality, which is not boring at all. She's determined, classy and has a great (dry) sense of humour. Not to mention, she had become an awesome fighter too.

Seeing the flashback scenes of Bill/Lorena made me think about Eric/Pam as well. I forgot whether she was made voluntarily or not, can someone enlighten me?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I believe it was voluntary

message 37: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) Didn't she say something in this last book about wanting to be turned to avoid marrying someone? Or am I thinking about another series? My daughter has my books, so I can't go and re-read the book to see if my memory is right or wrong on that. Altho I always got the idea that she was willing to be turned.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) Yeah she wanted to be turned because of Eric.

Ashley (bookworm84) (bookworm84) Nope. She didn't have a choice. She was coming home one night after she had snuck out to be with some man when Eric turned her.

I think she did make a comment that she didn't mind because Eric was good looking. ;)

message 40: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) All Together Dead p88+ is when Pam tells about her turning.

Like Ashley said, she was 19 and sneaking home from meeting a guy.

"On my way back to my house, trying to move so silently through the garden, I met Eric. There was no way to slip silently enough to avoid him."

(Sookie asks why he turned her and Pam says she thinks Eric was lonely.)

"Up until the night I died, I'd always been a very conventional woman underneath my daring tendencies...After I'd awakened, I discovered being a vampire freed some wild thing in me."

She says rather than feeling angry, she was shocked, and then she wanted to have sex with him...but that didn't last long as she goes all out kid in a candy store trying everything.

"We were good companions, and I enjoyed the sex and the hunting. But love? No."

So, she had no choice, but she acclimated very quickly and got started on trying out all the things she was never allowed do!

message 41: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (readsbydanig) | 11 comments I have always loved Pam from the very begining!!! Eric is a babe and even though he can be an ass at times I still always thought he was the best vampire!!

message 42: by Chasidy (new)

Chasidy | 22 comments I love Pam as well. I find her and Eric's relationship in both the book and tv show hilarious. More so in the tv show though because the actress plays her part perfectly. My favorite scene is when Eric tells her and Chong to search the woods near Sookie's house and she didn't want to because of her pumps. Haha, I love there interaction.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) yeah and he says something like "Pam, those were great looking pumps"

message 44: by Chasidy (new)

Chasidy | 22 comments Haha yes and those were great looking pumps. Love that scene. :)

message 45: by Diana (new)

Diana | 18 comments I love Pam also. I like how they made her look when she came back from searching, she was dirty and pissed off. She is hilarious.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I heard the director wants Pam to explore her lesbian side more.

message 47: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Pam is a lesbian in the books.

message 48: by Diana (new)

Diana | 18 comments Yeah she ends up having a relationship with the witch.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) that was a short lived relationship

message 50: by Diana (new)

Diana | 18 comments yeah it was, none the less it was kind of comical
