"It's like I can't breath," Rebecca said, "and there's no hope in the world. There's screaming, so much screaming."

Zach winced. "Did he mention how to get rid of it?"
Rebecca shook her head, not wanting to talk.
Zach wrapped an arm around her and pulled her to his side.
Rebecca buried her face in his chest, trying to ignore the shadows.
Zach held her close. "Does he know?" he asked.
Rebecca nodded. "But I'm not sure he knows how much I took."
Zach sighed and ran his fingers through her hair comfortingly.
Rebecca's breathing was shallow and stuttered and she clung to Zach tightly, trying to ignore the shadows that threatened to bury her in darkness.
"You have to give them back." Zach said softly. "You can't control them."
Rebecca shook her head stubbornly.
"Don't do this to yourself." Zach pleaded.
"I'm not going to do it to my brother," Rebecca said, trying her best to sound firm, but utterly failing.
"He knows how to handle it. He's been a Shadow Spinner all his life, right?" Zach said.
"Do you want to come inside?" Zach finally asked.
It took a minute, but finally Rebecca nodded.
Rebecca walked slowly, having trouble getting her legs to cooperate.
Zach lead her into the living room, where he sat and turned on the television.
Rebecca laid next to him, her head in his lap. She was pale and had deep bags under her eyes. Every so often she would whimper and cringe as a terrorized shreek reached her ears.
Zach took out his phone and pretended to play with it, but really texted Christian to come over as soon as possible.
Rebecca stared unseeingly at the tv, the shadows gathering closer around her.
There was a knock at the door, and Christian stepped in without waiting for it to be answered. "What's up?" he asked, looking tired. He'd been fine while he was with Susannah, but the drive over to Zach's house had given the shadows plenty of time to catch up with him.
Rebecca turned to Zach angrily. "Why did you do that?" She tried to shout.
Zach ignored her question and explained the situation to Christian, who groaned.
"I'm fine, Christian," Rebecca protested, slowly sitting up. She could have almost looked convincing if she didn't look like death personified.
Christian narrowed his eyes at her, and now that he knew to look for it, the darkness surrounding her was as obvious as his own. He put his hand out, uncurling his fingers slowly, and dispersed the shadows away from her. It wasn't long before they were attached to their original homes, a stray few sticking to him.
Rebecca gasped as the weight of the shadows vanished. She turned and glared at Zach for a moment, then turned her attention to her brother, looking him over worriedly.
Christian glared at her. "Don't do that again!" he snapped. "I don't need your pity." then he turned, and left the way he'd come.
"Thanks a lot," Rebecca shot at Zach, getting up to chase after Christian. "Christian, wait," she called after him, once outside.
Christian shook his head and kept walking stubbornly, part of him feeling like he was being a bit irrational, overreacting. But the darkness surrounding him that day made it hard for him to focus on anything but negative emotions, and being angry was easier than feeling sad. Unfortunately, he knew this wasn't even the first time he'd been irrationally angry at Rebecca, spurred by the darkness.
"I'm sorry," Rebecca said, grabbing his arm. "I was just trying to help."
"Leave me alone," Christian said, snatching his arm back.
Rebecca tried to figure out why they had both felt better at the house, then came to the conclusion that it could only have been because of Susannah. She ran to her car and drove like a maniac to Jacob's house, hoping to find her there.
Susannah had just arrived back home, and was fumbling with her keys.
"Hey Susannah," Rebecca said, running up behind her. "Can I talk to you about something?"
Susannah turned around, "Yeah, sure," she said.
"So... When Jake was in the hospital and you were coming over to train with Christian I used to kind of spy on your practices sometimes. Sorry, but I was curious. But I need you to do that thing where you reduce a flame into a ball of light."
Susannah looked at her, confused. "Why? It's not really that useful."
"It's hard to explain," Rebecca said. "But I think it will be really useful for what I want to use it for."
Susannah shrugged. "Alright, give me a second," she said, cupping her hands together, her eyes narrowing in concentration.
Rebecca bounced anxiously on the balls of her feet.
"Here," Susannah said a bit later, holding a small, glowing ball out to her.
"I hope it travels well," Rebecca said, taking it from Susannah. "Thank you." Then she got back in her car, hoping to find Christian at home.
Christian was just walking up the driveway.
Rebecca ran up to him and caught his arm.
christain turned and glared when he saw it was her.
