{{I have no idea why my phone posted that.}}"To see if there is any way to make her human," Alek said as though it should be obvious.
"If she uses her powers while she's a vampire, they'll probably kill her." Christian said.
"She's already dead for all intents and purposes," Alek said. "How could it kill her?"
"The two magics, soulfire and whatever animates a vampire can't coexist. ones life and ones death. the magic in you just faded, but I have a feeling that the shadows binding her powers kept them from disappearing. had I not bonded her powers, they might have faded too, or they could have kept the transition from working. either way, they were kept from getting in the way. but it's not a terribly powerful binding. if she reaches for her powers she can reach them. if that happens, both magics will snuff each other out and she'll more than likely die." Christian said.
Alek swore again, but managed not to break the steps.
"So whatever you do, be careful." Christian said.
Alek mumbled something along the lines of an agreement.
Christian lapsed into silence, the longer he sat there, the darker the shadows around him got.
After a minute Alek got up and turned toward the house. "So where can I find the book?" He asked as he headed inside.
"Kitchen table." Christian answered absently .
Alek looked at him curiously for a moment then went in to get the book. "What are you doing here?" Rebecca asked from the couch.
"Borrowing a book from your brother," he said. "By the way, shadows seem to be gathering around him a lot outside. I don't know if that means anything." Then he grabbed the book and left.
Rebecca turned off the TV and went outside to sit next to Christian. "Hey bro," she said as she sat.
Christian glanced at her. "Hey," he replied.
"You okay?" Rebecca asked, conversationally.
Christian shrugged. "Alright I suppose. unusual, unprovoked Off days come with the shadow spinner territory."
"Has it always been like that?" Rebecca asked, realizing that she had never really paid much attention to him.
Christian nodded. "Being so close to shadows gets...tough every once and a while. Shadows are where bad things happen. So when they start whispering, I know I'm in for a pretty bad day."
"Will you show me?" Rebecca asked, holding her hand out that was coated with a connecting spell.
Christian looked at her strangely. "Why?" he asked.
"Because I've sucked as a sister up to now," Rebecca said. "So I want to see if I can help."
Christian took her hand.Shadows like Christians gathered at her feet, and a feeling of foreboding and depression washed over her as the shadows started whispering in her ear, spilling secrets and lies and dark desires, telling of the dark crimes they'd seen, the atrocities, sometimes the echo of a terrorized scream even slipping through.
Rebecca gasped at the intensity of the dark pressing down on her, and squeezed Christians hand some.
Christian slipped his hand away, breaking the connection.
Rebecca felt like a barbell was lifted off of her chest, and she started to breath deeply. "How often does that happen?" She asked.
Christian shrugged. "It varies. Sometimes weeks pass and everything's fine, sometimes it goes on for weeks at a time. Other times it happens once or twice a week or a month."
Rebecca wrapped an arm around him, casting a modified version of the spell she had just used. Rather than feeling things the way he did, she took some of it from, putting onto herself; splitting it with him.
Christian gasped as the weight on his chest lightened. "What did you do?" he asked.
"Helped," Rebecca muttered, putting a hand on her head.
"Well, as nice as it feels, stop it." Christian said, sliding away from her and breaking the connection again. "There's no reason for you to feel bad too."
Despite Christian moving away, what Rebecca had already taken stayed with her. "I'm ok," she lied, hoping it was convincing enough.
"Right," Christian said, Not looking convinced.The shadows around both of them started to recede as footsteps made their way up the sidewalk towards their house.
Christian looked up to see Susannah. "Hey," he greeted with a smile, the warm glow that surrounded most firestarters pushing the shadows away.
"Hi," Rebecca said, starting to feel better.
"Do you think you could help me with that blue fire attack?" Susannah asked, sitting next to them."Sure," Christian said, smiling easily.
"I'll see you guys later," Rebecca said, getting up when she felt better.
Christian and Susannah went into the backyard.
Rebecca started to drive, eventually noticing that the farther she got from Susannah the worse she started to feel again. By the time she got to Zach's house, she couldn't even bring herself to get out of the car.
Zach noticed her car in the driveway when he passed by a window and walked out to meet her.
Rebecca was gripping the steering wheel so tight her knuckles were white. The shadows gathering so that they blacked out the windows.
"Hey, what's wrong?" Zach asked, noticing her grip on the steering wheel when he opened the passenger side door.
"I did something something stupid," Rebecca groaned.
Zach couldn't help but grin as he sat down next to her. "Oh? And what is it this time?" he asked teasingly.
"I took Christians shadows," Rebecca said with a whimper.
Zach looked at her sideways. "What do you mean?" he asked, taking her hand in his, all joking gone.
Rebecca tried to explain it the way Christian had, that bad things happen in shadows and that sometimes all of those things get to the shadow spinners, but she wasn't sure she was telling it right. "I did a spell," she said, "to see what he meant and it was awful. I... I wanted to help him, so I took some of it, trying to take some away."
Zach groaned. "Rebecca, at least he's used to it. You had no idea what you were getting yourself into!" he said.
"He's my brother!" Rebecca snapped. "And I have been a complete b**ch to him our entire lives, worse than you and Caroline. I couldn't let him keep going through that."
Zach sighed. "So now what?" he asked.
Rebecca shook her head. "I don't know," she whispered.
"What do you feel like?" Zach asked curiously.
