"About a year ago, there was this guy. He was the town ministers son and everyone loved him, including me. He asked me out and I was all excited. But on the date he came on to me, was going too far too fast and wouldn't move away. I got scared, kneed him in the groin, and he would probably still have kept going if someone hadn't entered the room. Aileys a religious town. No one would have believed me if I had said the ministers son was a twisted, scary son of a b**ch, so I kept quiet. that back there Just kind of brought the memory back." Sabrina said, and by the time she finished she was avoiding looking at him again. "Its no big deal. Not anymore."
"I'm sorry," Alek said for what felt like the millionth time.
"I said it didn't matter." Sabrina said turning around. "Come on, we have a dress to buy." she said as she started walking, the strained enthusiasm in het voice indicating that she'd rather not talk about it anymore.
"Come on," Alek said, leading her or the garage on the side of the house.
He opened the door to reveal the car that was he pretty much never used inside. He took out his phone and looked up the store in Port Angelus, then pulled up directions. "Here," he said, handing Sabrina the phone, "you navigate."
"gotcha" Sabrina said, walking over to the passengers side,
"You might want to put on some music," Alek said when he'd turned on the car. "It's an hour and a half drive."
"What do you usually listen to?" Sabrina asked as she flipped through radio stations.
Alek shrugged. "Just put on whatever you want."
"I don't think I listen to any music that will interest you." Sabrina warned.
"That's ok," Alek said. "I'll deal."
Sabrina stopped the radio on a classic station.
Alek glanced at her out of the corner of his eye as he drove. "Not quite my cup of tea," he said.
"deal" Sabrina said, sitting back in her seat
Alek rolled his eyes. "So, where are we going?" He asked, pointing at the phone.
"straight for three miles then turn left and go straight for another 20" Sabrina said.
Sabrina looked out the window, humming to the Mozart song that was playing on the radio.
"Don't get distracted," Alek said, almost to where the directions she'd told him were. "What's next?"
"I'm not distracted. " Sabrina said, still looking out the window. "you take a left at centerville and drive for ten miles then another left. after another fifteen miles, you'll find the place"
"You okay?" Alek asked, reaching over to take her hand.
"fine" Sabrina said, lacing her fingers through his. she turned to look at him. "so what kind of music do you usually listen to? " Sabrina asked again.
"Nothing specific," Alek said. "Just whatever's on."
"this is on" Sabrina said, nodding towards the radio, where another classical song was playing. "but you said it wasn't your cup of tea. which means something else is."
"I didn't mean that I don't like it," Alek said. "I just don't find myself listening to it all that often."
"then tell me something you do have a preference about" Sabrina said,
"Continue." Sabrina said. "What about it?"
"There are ones that taste better than others is all," Alek said.
"Like a bear over a deer or something?" Sabrina asked, trying to understand what he was talking about,
Alek nodded. "Carnivores taste better than herbivores," he said. "Human better than that." And yours best of all, he thought.
"interesting." Sabrina said. "of the three places you've lived, was there one you liked more than the others?"
"Well I don't really remember Russia, I was too little. But between England and Forks I have to say this place has one thing in its favor," Alek said, running his thumb over the back of her hand.
"Don't be a smart ass," Alek said. "You know full well what I mean."
Sabrina laughed. "I know." She said.
Alek smiled, pulling up infront of the store. "Here we are," he said. "Why don't you go on in and I'll find a place to park."
"Ok, see you in a bit." Sabrina said, hopping out and all but skipping into the store.
Alek started circling the blocks to find somewhere to park. A guy working the register saw Sabrina come in and hopped over the counter. "So what's your name?" He asked, leaning against one of the racks infront of her.
"Sabrina," Sabrina replied as she flipped through a rack of blue dresses she knew would go well with her red hair and bring out her blue eyes. "Yours?"
"Max," the boy said, slowly moving closer to her. "Cute name, makes sense seeing who it belongs too."
Sabrina laughed. "Thanks," she said with a friendly smile. "How long have you worked here?" she asked, making casual conversation as she looked through the dresses, picking out a couple.
"A while," Max said. "What's the dress for?"
"There's going to be a summer solstice dance Friday in Forks, and I talked my boyfriend into going with me." Sabrina said. "I just moved here and didn't really pack any dresses."
"So you have a boyfriend," Max said, taking a step back to move back to the counter.
". . .Yes, I think that what you'd call him." Sabrina said. "Where are your dressing rooms?" she asked.
Max pointed to the back of the store. "Hey babe," Alek said, coming into the store.
