Susannah shook her head. "I don't think so." she said.

"Alright," Jacob said. "You're sure though?"
"I'm not sure about anything anymore." Susannah said softly.
"Well you can be sure that I'll always take care of you," Jacob said.
Susannah moved from his lap, to sit on the couch next to him. "Don't let me keep you up." she said. "You should get some sleep."
"I'd rather make sure you're okay," Jacob said.
"I'd be better if I knew you were getting sleep." Susannah said.
"Really I'm fine I can run for almost a week on no sleep," Jacob said.
"If you're sure. . ." Susannah said, a little disbelieving, before she just sat there quietly.
"Yeah I'm sure," Jacob said. "I'm around to make sure you're alright."
"Well, that could take a while." Susannah said.
"Thats good, because I've got nothing but time," Jacob said.
Susannah rested her head against his shoulder.
"I think you're staying home for the rest of the week," Jacob said as soon as the thought crossed his mind.
"But it wasn't too long ago I missed a day." Susannah said.
"It was yesterday that you missed a day," Jacob pointed out. "And so what your mother was just murdered.''
"Exactly. Which means I have no parents, and at 17, I'm technically underage. I turn 18 in a month. If I can keep the state from bugging me for that long, then I'll miss a week then." Susannah said.
"It's only two more days," Jacob said. "And no one will expect you to be there after what happened."
"I expect me to be there." Susannah said.
"I just don't see why you wouldn't want to take a break after what just happened," Jacob said.
"What would I do?" Susannah asked. "Sit here and be sad? I can't do that, Jacob. School would be a break. It'd be a break from this pain. Where my mind can think about numbers and formulas, and dates, instead of about how much losing her hurts. I have to go to school tomorrow." then, softer, she added, "I don't think I can survive this feeling without some kind of distraction."
"Alright," Jacob said. "We'll go tomorrow."
"Thank you." Susannah said, the tears welling up in her eyes again, but not escaping this time.
"Sure," Jacob said kissing her head.
Jacob picked up Susannah and the pillow and brought them into his room. He laid her down on the bed and laid down next to her. "I think you should stay here tonight," he said.
Susannah shrugged. "That's fine." she said quietly.
Jacob wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close.
Susannah relaxed in his arms, the tension the grief put on her body leaving with his touch.
Susannah closed her eyes and tried to sleep.
Susannah opened her eyes again two seconds later when all she could see was her mother's body lying in the half opened doorway. She'd never be able to sleep with that image in her mind.
Jacob looked at her. "You really should get some sleep," he said.
"I can't sleep." Susannah said. "Every time I close my eyes all I see is her. Not her smiling and being happy. No, her lying in our doorway, dead. It's the most horrifying image that's ever been stuck in my head. And what makes it worse is that it's not some overactive imagination thing. I can't open my eyes and it all disappear. Because it actually happened."
"I know and I'm sorry," Jacob said. "I used to have nightmares about my moms funeral all the time when I was little. But I'm not going to tell you that with time everything is going to be like it never happened, because it won't. Years and years will go by and you'll wake up terrified because you had that nightmare again after not having it for a long long time. I will tell you that it does better. After a couple of moths you'll go through a day where your mind was too preoccupied to mourn her and you'll feel guilty but slowly after that point day by day you will start to spend less time thinking about her."
"That's so scary." Susannah said. "What if I start to forget her? What if I forget her laugh, or the way she always left random objects lying around the house that somehow managed to trip me every time? How do you balance the pain of remembering, and the fear of forgetting?"
"I don't really know how," Jacob admitted. "It just happens over time. The best thing I can suggest is one sleeping and two keeping busy."
"Ok." Susannah said, moving a little closer to him. "And thanks." she said.
"You're welcome," Jacob said giving her a reassuring squeeze.
Susannah closed her eyes, and tried to sleep. Again.
Jacob went back to rubbing her back.
A few minutes later, Susannah was asleep.
