Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I have been pondering long and hard, as I have not been able to pin down what the Corbyn situation reminds me of. However, this evening it came to me in a moment of clarity - there are huge similarities between Jeremy Corbyn and Donald Crowhurst.

Both got an idea and got talked into taking an action that they were unsure of. Both set off on an adventure and were considered the outsider amateurs. Both came from behind to reluctantly take the lead when it was least expected. Both were forced into a situation that they were ill-equipped to handle.

Here is the documentary about Donald Crowhurst. It is both fascinating and tragic in equal measure, but incredibly compelling. Watch it and I think you will see things in a different light.

R.M.F. Brown | 2124 comments Corbyn has appointed Baron Watson as his shadow education minister.

For those not familiar with Scottish politics, Watson served 8 months in jail for trying to set fire to a hotel in Scotland...

Corbyn must be a Tory plant.

I was thinking more along the lines of nettle.

Hi epitaph is very moving, especially where it is carved... If you really want to read a great account, try this book - it's on my shelves and is well worth the read

I don't know why the UK is surprised by these revelations - the upper classes have always been a law onto themselves.

message 1889: by R.M.F. (new)

R.M.F. Brown | 2124 comments Two key questions:

1) Why is Ashcroft releasing this stuff now, if he's been sitting on it for years?

2) Why isn't Cameron denying this?

You recall correctly. Actually, I had two, one was superb (petrol) the other was... less so, that was diesel.

My current car is a diesel and is very economical for the travelling I do, lots of long distance driving. No use for short journeys, as many people found out when the dealers mis-sold them.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Mind you, reports are now beginning to appear that the petrol cars engine management systems have also been gamed to reflect lower CO2 levels.

After all, why only cheat on one type of engine?

message 1893: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments They must be gutted that a hidden computer cheat was discovered!

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments evidently there has been confusion for some years. When the Euro-6 standard was imposed, it was expected that nitrogen oxide levels would decline, but they didn't. This is what raised suspicions. Of course, not all diesel cars are VW Group, so this must be quite common.

message 1896: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments surely you remember the phrase 'to deny is to confirm'

Denying will actually do no good. He probably couldn't afford to fight Ashcroft in the courts as Ashcroft could just spend a few million to keep it in the headlines for months or years

As it is the sort of comments I've heard, people by and large don't seem to bothered. Another joke I heard was where one chap joined some others standing chatting when it just came out and made a comment about what cameron put in pigs mouths. The reply was "I've seen some of the women you slept with" followed by general laughter.

The general opinion I see out there when you just stop and talk to people in queues or whatever is along the lines of "they're all rich spoiled brats on serious money. We're supposed to be impressed because some socialist has take a cut in income more than I earn a year just to join Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet."

If the cheat is computer software based, I would automatically suspect every other major car manufacturer as well, to be honest

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Will wrote: "If the cheat is computer software based, I would automatically suspect every other major car manufacturer as well, to be honest "

If you think about it, it is, once again, the tragedy of the commons. To sell cars they have to have lower emissions, increase acceleration, increase torque, and increase fuel economy over their competitors. If one manufacturer is getting advantage by disguising its emission results, to indicate that their cars have better performance, then the others have no choice. As I said above, the tragedy of the commons.
