Karl Drinkwater (karldrinkwater) I'm Karl. With my left hand I write horror, with my right I pen literary fiction about relationships. Sometimes I get tangled up and someone has to untie me.

Mark Goldstein | 16 comments Hi Karl, your book Cold Fusion 2000 sounds interesting to me and I hope I get to read it soon. It sounds like you may have used your right mainly for this one!

message 4613: by Karl (new)

Karl Drinkwater (karldrinkwater) Mark - you're correct, it is more of a right-handed painting while walking down a sunlit street than my previous work. :-)

message 4614: by Karl (new)

Karl Drinkwater (karldrinkwater) Dawn - I think that may happen in the future since there's plenty of darkness in relationships and conversely a need for hope in the darkness. I'll try shaking hands this weekend.

Imran Siddiq (imransiddiqwriter) | 3 comments Writing is something that I never should have stopped doing since when I was a child. Started it again in 2007, and never looked back.

I'm Imran Siddiq. I work in the Health Service, do lots of work and am always trying to improve. The evenings are mine to own, and that's where I come alive with writing and digital art.

Have written 6 novels, and just released my first last month. I won't spam, so it's up to you if you click and read it. (it's a YA Sci Fi with Romance).

I am still chasing the traditional route, and although I am haven't been lucky, I have received great feedback, and am regularly attending writing festivals.

My ethos is to write and trust the support that so many other writers give to one another. You are not alone. We are here.

Hey everyone! I'm new to the site, but I wanted to let you all know that I am an avid book reader.
I'm actually trying to get my new book review site off the ground. I do not specialize in any certain topic or genre. That being said, I am not into reading Erotica, non-fiction, self-help, or autobiographical works.
However, I am looking for a few people who will help me help them.
I'm offering to write free reviews (posting on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, iTunes, Goodreads, etc.) for the first few people who ask about them.
If you're interested (or would like more information regarding reviews), feel free to reply back, or visit/message me on Facebook:

Also, visit my website (currently under construction):

For a few months I was reading young adult/new adult until all the characters blended together. Then I fell in love with dystopia/science fiction. Now I'm reading a mix of genres - nonfiction, unhappy chick lit (don't know what else to call it) and an intriguing mystery. Glad to be a new member and hope to find more new authors! :)

My turn. I give you my official bio.

I've always had a creative side. Growing up I imagined myself a movie director. Even went so far as to create a short creature feature about an alien space craft crash landing in the woods behind my house.

There was no script. The spacecraft was aluminum foil wrapped around a wooden frame, (Don’t tell my mom) and the alien was my brother in some pretty lame make-up chasing me and my sister through the woods.

Shot it on my Dad's 8mm camera and used my allowance to have it developed. The night of the world premier the only audience was my mom and dad. But it was pretty cool to see something I created on the screen. Writing was a natural outgrowth of that desire. Add to that the fact I've been a voracious reader since I was seven.

My tastes lean towards the macabre. Growing up I read Creepy, Eerie and Weird comics. It wasn't long before I graduated into horror fiction books from the library. Had to get my parent's permission to check out many of the books I read as they were exclusive to the adult section. Here I discovered Lovecraft, Smith, Burroughs, and a host of others whose names currently escape me., it’s only natural that after consuming well over three thousand books I would turn to writing.

At the very beginning I thought what's so hard about writing. String together a few sentences and viola, you have a story. Boy was I in for a surprise. I quickly learned that writing is hard work. The description of the lonely writer staring at the blank page until until blood forms on his forehead is not that far from the truth.

I started writing before the internet was around so I followed the course of write and submit, write some more, submit some more, and collect a ton of rejection letters. I probably had a file drawer stuffed with rejections. At first they were your typical form rejection letter Dear “Add Authors name here, blah blah blah not for us. blah blah blah.

I persisted, refusing to give up, and a strange thing happened, the form rejection letters became personal notes from editors, close but not quite what we’re looking for. Nice try, looking forward to seeing more. That sort of thing.

Then it happened. I got a yes. A small fanzine wanted one of my stories. They couldn’t pay anything more than one contributor copy, but who cared. They wanted my story. A total stranger wanted to publish one of my stories. I was ecstatic. I was now a published writer.

At about this time I was just finishing a novel. “Adversary, Some Things Are Better Left Undiscovered.” I signed up for the Maui writer’s conference marketplace where you sent the first page of your novel, along with a hundred bucks, to the conference to be passed around to the major publishers and agents. The first night of the conference I received a long distance phone call from Kimberly Cameron a literary agent requesting first right of refusal for Adversary. I was on cloud nine. A week later I received a written request from an editor with Random House asking to see the entire manuscript. I was on my way.

Sadly it was at this junction that I screwed up royally. Random house was talking no advance, 8% royalties with a 3% reserve against returns. Research indicated my book would probably be classified as a C title with a three month shelf life. By this time I had already written a second book and was working on a third novel. We had gotten the internet less than six months earlier and I found a place called iUniverse where for $99.00 I could publish my book, get it listed with all the major retailers and collect a 20% royalty on each sale with the book being available forever. What could be easier than that?

Live and learn.

When the dust settled I was thoroughly disgusted with myself and writing in general. At this time too we had just bought a house and the added responsibilities, along with the loss of a hard drive that contained twenty years of hard work pretty much put the final nail in the coffin of my desire to be a writer.

I struggled to live the normal life, work hard, get promoted at work and I succeeded. I worked my way up from field rep to regional trainer, to district manager with thirty two direct reports. But there was still something missing from my life. I tried a few times to start writing again, but my responsibilities at work would intrude.

Then, in February of 2008, I was unemployed, the housing market tanked, and the economy went south. At the age of fifty I had to start all over again. To say I was bitter would be an understatement. So I returned to the only thing that has remained constant in my life. My writing. Now I'm older and wiser and have learned a valuable lesson about myself and my desire to write.

It is not the lure of riches or fame that drives me. Rather the desire to connect with the reader on an emotional level, to share with them my unique vision of the world around us. To tell them a story in the old tradition.

I share my home with my wife of twenty plus years and four furry, four legged children. Between us my wife and I have four grown children and eight grandchildren, the oldest is proving to be a very capable basketball player on his middle school team.

I'm on FB, Twitter, I have a blog and a website, all of the things a writer is "supposed to have". But I don't participate very much as it's a drain on my writing time, something I have very little of since I work a full time job as well.

So here I am in all my glory.
