Hi y'all! My name is Jennifer and I am currently writing my first novel. I'ts in the 50 Shades genre, a novelty, I know :) but I enjoyed the books so much, I went through every recommendation I could find, and was left wanting. I realized others were left in the same position, and though my purpose in life,(not actualized due to consummate laziness and the business of motherhood) has always been to write, I have yet to 'put pen to paper,' so to speak. This time, however, I am about 12,000 words in and couldn't be more excited! I'm also quite excited that I discovered this site and, in particular, this forum!!

It's a lot of work to promote a book. There is a thread in this group to ask for reviews. Depending on the genre, I could probably point you to a couple of bloggers who do reviews. :D

Philippa (philippa-poet) | 16 comments Thank you for the welcome to this group. My name is Philippa (Rees) and I write in many forms ( none would be recognised as 'genres') recently narrative poetry, and most recently a book on the cusp of release called 'Involution- An Odyssey'. I have a published book 'A Shadow in Yucatan' which has been reviewed by a fellow Goodreader most generously. I have been absorbed in proofreading etc but hope to contribute more actively in the New Year. The new book site is here http://involution-odyssey.com/ and I would very much welcome comments and suggestions from readers or fellow authors.

We don't have a problem with "offensive" words at Sizzler Editions...have to tout my editor hat here heh.

I do a few cons a year partially on the publisher's dime. I intend to do RomCon one of these years. Isn't that the one run by EC? I did RWA several years abck when it was in SF and I was frightened. I'd only been a published author what...nine years or so. Just...all those women!

Oh, I don't have a problem with "offensive" words either, but I'm trying to branch out. Plus, I lost a "day" job because the term "erotica" was attached to my books.

I don't believe RomCon is put on by EC. There were many corporate/publisher sponsors, including Samhain. I haven't made it to RWA yet, or to RT, but I can see where it would be a little scary for a man at first!

With my new paranormal novel coming out next year the Con I really want to go to is Authors After Dark... hard to get in as an author, but I hear it is a blast!

That sounds lame of the former day job...

I'll be at AAD as an editor in 2013. I was hoping to go this year but it didn't work out. I know Stella takes great pains to choose the authors she has for AAD.

A smart publisher would involve other publishers as a money making method OR a way of eliminating/reducing cost. I'd have to ask Kelli Collins at EC because I INTEND to speak at both the EC Con and any other I attend.

I believe RomCon is independent from any publishers. http://www.romcon.com/about-romcon

Exactly, AAD is hard to get into as an author because there are limited spots and a lot of great PNR authors. Not much hope for a new PNR author (no matter how many years experience I have in other publishing areas).

Kelli Baeli (jaebaeli) | 5 comments by way of introduction, here's my author bio:

Kelli Jae Baeli began writing as a child, exploring poetry and journaling, and eventually moving on to short stories. After a romantic fling in the military with another female soldier, she decided to write a book based on the experience. The story that evolved took on a life of it's own, but it became her first novel, As You Were. This was followed quickly by Armchair Detective, a book she said she wrote because she couldn’t find other lesbian fiction she liked and so wanted to write something she would want to read. She's been doing that ever since.

There is nothing like experience to craft a character. Baeli has plenty to spare-from a stint in the military to late nights spent delivering newspapers or waiting tables, to office and restaurant management, to a reporter for a local newspaper, to a technical writer for a corporate jet company. Some of Baeli's fondest endeavors were fronting an all female band for seven years and as a managing editor for a women's press. Each job was one that Baeli turned into a study in human nature.

She pursued eight years of higher education, in the curriculum for a B.A. in Professional Writing & Editing, founded Kindred Ink Writer's Initiative and Kind Red Ink Editing Services, and maintains an author site, the blog Synaptic Circus and three forums. She is also an independent publisher, editor, webmaster, blogger, artist, and singer-songwriter, with over 200 songwriting credits. Not shackled to one genre, she has authored 29 books both fiction and nonfiction, and numerous stories and articles, but is concentrating now on the lesbian fiction genre.

Baeli currently resides in Dunedin, New Zealand with her partner, author Kate Genet, and together they founded Lesbian Literati Press.

Alan Daniels | 4 comments Hello everybody,
My name is Alan Daniels. I am the author of a new erotic comedy Spank: The Improbable Adventures of George Aloysius Brown.
Set in London, Hong Kong and Sydney, it tells the story of a year in the lives of two very different people for whom spanking is the ultimate turn-on and how the pursuit of their passion leads them into bizarre world of strange and fascinating characters. It is available at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009384Z9W
George Aloysius Brown, a middle-aged civil servant, and Catherine Mallory Jones, a beautiful university student, find their lives transformed when they set out to win an award for the first in their creative writing class to publish a novel.
During his research George visits the world's biggest erotica exhibition - with surprising results; he attends an open house at a posh S&M club where he befriends a trainee dominatrix who really wants to be a ballet dancer; he auditions for a part in an adult movie filmed by a titled lady; and he visits a librarian with a sideline of entertaining 'assertive older gentlemen'. George rather enjoys his new life as a writer until he buys telephone sex from a B-grade movie actress and it all goes horribly wrong.
Catherine, meanwhile, who is writing a romance, finds many ways to indulge her desires, including an al fresco spanking during a picnic with her boyfriend; an encounter with a wheelchair dominatrix who makes bejewelled rattan canes for export to Los Angeles; and a steamy affair with her former headmaster. Eventually, she falls in love with a handsome Australian lifeguard who attends to her needs in more ways than one. However, when her past catches up with her and she fears for her life she returns to London because she believes George will know what to do. The stories of these two endearing people intertwine throughout the narrative, which ends in one final ‘improbable’ adventure.
I think what makes my book different is the comedy and satirical content interspersed throughout the story that complements and balances the sex scenes. I have tried to depict spanking as incomparably exciting and edgy, but also playful, loving, sensual and romantic.

Jay Storey (jayallanstorey) | 5 comments My name is Jay Allan Storey. I am both an avid reader and writer. I've currently written one novel and one novella (available on Goodreads).

I'm in the process of completing the rough draft of a second novel and I'm part way into a second novella (or will it be another novel? I'm not sure yet.)

So far my writing seems to be quite eclectic: an offbeat inspirational story, a YA Speculative Fiction novel, a sort of twisted detective story and a twisted disaster story. I know this probably isn't the best way to build an audience, but, hey - that's what comes out!

It's great to be part of the group.

Hi Tom,

I post this warning only because you are a self-confessed newbie in the world of fiction.

Unless you are writing for the joy of it, with no intention of being picked up by a mainstream publisher; or alternatively, intend self-publishing - (which is more or less the same thing) - then never, ever, post your work, or any portion thereof, onto the internet.

The general consensus of most, (mainstream) publishers and literary agents, is that if it is posted it is ipso facto considered published - and so they won’t touch it, even if they like it!

Some may accept your posting a portion, say one or two chapters, but this is normally considered okay AFTER and NOT before publication. The argument is that it diminishes the value of the story, (a) if final editing alters whatever you’ve already posted, and (b) if you posted the whole thing, or enough to reveal the plot, then would buy the book when they can just read it online, or (c) created an interest in your book so far in advance of publishing that it incurs loss of sales due to customer frustration.

Anyway, whatever you do is ultimately your choice. I wish you tons of luck and joyous writing!

I'm the author of Craving: Why We Can't Seem to Get Enough which is a heavily referenced but fairly accessible/mass market book on why we crave and how to stop cravings.

I wanted to write this because there is quite a bit of pseudoscience on various cravings but nothing mass market that really covers the gamut of cravings from chocolate to heroin from a research-based perspective.

In any case, I'm glad to join the community and look forward to learning about other authors and their books.

Here’s the thing, being rejected by mainstream, particularly if you are a new author, is generally a sure sign that your skills, or plot, aren’t quite there yet. It’s time to go back to the keyboard and practice.

The idiom, “I’ve written a book and it deserves to be published”, is baloney! Truth is, its far, far, easier these days to get published than it is to get read.

With the introduction of Indie-publishing, there is so much crap out there, that less than 2% of everything published gets a large enough readership to recover costs; and less than 1% actually makes money.

So unless you are a seasoned writer with a platform, or a “Mega-Star” with a fan club (in which case you can afford a ghost writer to fix your mess if you suck at writing), or a better marketing and business guru than you are a writer – stay away from Self-Publishing.

Disclaimer: Ignore any of the above if:

a) your ego requires that you to invest several thousand dollars to impress your family and friends, or

b) its poetry or some off-beat category that doesn’t have mass readership anyway.
