I'm new to the mystery genre, but I picked up Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone series (up to "I is for Innocent"). I like how real Kinsey is, cranky and rude and in love with her solitude. Craig Johnson's my other go to mystery writer with his Walt Longmire series. Have you read books from either author? -Robyn

Kevin Howard | 6 comments Hello to all readers and authors. My name is Kevin J. Howard and I'm an author from Washington State. I wrote my first novel when I was in seventh grade and have never stopped, of course it was written in pencil and has long since faded and smeared. I even wrote an entire novel outline on register tape while working for a calendar kiosk...writers write. I am very thankful to be a member of such an awesome group. I look forward to speaking with you all.

I work full time at London Heathrow and in my spare time I write. I have always told stories, first to my children and more lately to my grandchildren. The Tessellation Saga, is the first story I've ever committed to paper (or pc... lol) I look forward to chatting, about anything!

Hi Robyn. No, I'm afraid I haven't read either author. I'm very familiar with Sue Grafton, of course, because you see her books around all the time, but I haven't ever picked up one. Craig Johnson I haven't really noticed. I have to confess my own reading in this genre has tapered off a lot since I've started writing in it. Trying to stay focused on my own ideas, I guess.

What is it about Walt Longmire that keeps bringing you back to Craig Johnson?

Mike

Walt Longmire made me laugh. It comes down to that, if I'm about to jump into dark intentions and deadly consequences, give me something to light the way back. Johnson sets the tone early in The Cold Dish when I laughed out loud in the first few pages. Also, I can't possibly write a character like Walt because he's very much the creation of a man. There's a touch of embarassing honesty in his reflections. It helps that I never fully know the culprit until the heartbreaking end. Johnson does that too, he makes you cry. So I guess I have a writer's crush on Craig Johnson.

Christie Meierz (christiemeierz) | 6 comments Hi, I'm Christie Meierz. Nice to meet you! I just released my debut novel The Marann in October. It's a scifi romance / space opera set on another world 500 years in the future. Recently, it's been on Amazon's science fiction, space opera, and futuristic romance best seller lists.

I created the world to play with some ideas -- it's really speculative fiction more than science fiction. Some of the ideas seem to have offended the futuristic romance readers. I think perhaps I made my aliens a little too alien. :-/

I live and write and love in Pittsburgh, PA, where I'm working on a pair of first contact short stories to release (hopefully in December) while I polish and edit the next novel in the series.

So many subforums here, I'm not sure where exactly I should hang out! My book straddles 2 genres (space opera and futuristic romance). Oops!

Jason | 14 comments Hello all - I'm a writer and editor living in Arlington, VA. My current main project is editing a series of three graphic novel anthologies for Fulcrum Publishing on the New England and Mid-Atlantic colonial period. They're due to start coming out in 2014. My side project is a series of 99-cent (and often free) Twilight Zone-inspired sci-fi shorts for kids distributed via the Amazon Kindle.

This year I've also been published in Dark Horse Comics' ONCE UPON A TIME MACHINE and Fulcrum Publishing's DISTRICT COMICS: AN UNCONVENTIONAL HISTORY OF WASHINGTON DC (just named one of the top 20 books of the year by the Washington Post).

I've been a Goodreads member for a long time but my membership and involvement has gone dormant. I'm trying to get back into the community now...

Look forward to talking with you all!

R.L. Kiser (rlkiser) | 11 comments Hi. I'm R.L. Kiser, a disabled homeless Vietnam vet who decided to pick up where I left off at age 14 (sort of) before "life" got in the way of my writing career. I've managed to do that now and have 4 eBooks available online, two print editions and a third on the way.
Two westerns, one fantasy, but the most popular seems to be the SciFi-Adventure. I have six more books in-process.
How does a "homeless" guy get an eBook published, you might well ask. Ain't easy! Our illustrious American govt. has a 5 year program to eliminate homelessness amongst its veterans (thank you Obama).

Check out this Book Video for Moonwarriors. I wrote two werewolves vs vampires novels. I wrote the song, Full Moon BloodLust which is the song in the video plus I played the drums in the band Volknor. I now play the drums in the band Sudden Darkness with my Brother Christopher Nugent. Here are the Lyrics to the song with Volknor. Let us know what you think of the writing skill?? And if you may be interested in the books on amazon?

When the moonlight strikes me, I am filled with power. In an evil age, in my darkest hour. Death and Destruction are the pleasures of my life. A lonely life filled with agony. Here I stand upon this Ledge with sword in hand I hereby pledge. That in the full moon's waning light. I shall make my Sacrifice. The Fog drifts down the hills into my dark domain. My senses sharp and I Insane. Into the woods I go with the moonlight as my guide. I now creep like the mist and from my wrath you can not hide. I shall avenge all I have lost. Behold the coming of death with your now ending immortal life. I shall make my sacrifice. Unto the goddess of the night. I shall make my sacrifice.Rusty Nugent

I'm an author and nature photographer, living in Santa Cruz, California. I recently published the book Growing Up Humming, a photo illustrated, true story about hummingbird chicks growing up on the nest. I've also finished writing and illustrating my second book, which I hope to publish soon. I'm working on finishing my third.

I like to write a fairly wide variety of kinds of books, including both fiction and nonfiction children's books, science fiction novels, romance novels, mystery novels, fairy tales, how to books about crafts, wildlife photography, the photography business, the art of photography, photography techniques, photography gear, philosophical tracts about epistemology, art criticism, haiku, evolutionary theory, and more. I hope to be publishing a lot of my work over the next few years.

It's nice to meet you all. I look forward to our discussions.

David Loan | 1 comments Hello. My name is David Loan
I'm writing this and you're reading it. And it's all down to the internet.
Was the world a better or worse place without the web? I don't know, but it was definitely an easier place to be private, forgotten, or disenfranchised, depending on your point of view.
I wanted to write a timely novel of how the web has opened us all up to being scrutinised, often without our knowledge and against our will. I hope I've succeeded. "I've Been Watching You" is a romantic story of infatuation and obsession, focussing on the lives of two families over 25 years.
I was born in Yorkshire, England, the son of a coal miner. My love of words was fostered initially by comics read in holiday caravans, and subsequently I read voraciously, enjoying novels, poetry, and plays from all eras and countries.
My observation of people and dialogue has been influenced by the many jobs I've done - steelworks labourer, grape-picker, hotel pot washer, postman, pneumatic drill operator, and trainee teacher to name a few.
I'm looking forward to thought-provoking conversations with like-minded people, and for constructive reviews. I hope the community can help.
David

Sharon Michael Robyn wrote: "Craig Johnson's my other go to mystery writer with his Walt Longmire series. Have you read books from either author? "

I'm a mystery reader and a definite Walt Longmire fan. A big part of that is because I grew up and lived most of my life within 60 miles of where the books are set and I've *known* the kind of people Craig Johnson writes about. These characters are people I've grown up with, worked with and lived with all my life. This is one of the very few authors I've read where the setting and people are in the modern west who always gets it right.

Every one of these books is like a visit home for me.

Have you watched any of the A&E TV series? I learned about the books from the show's website and had to read them. I just knew Johnson got it right in the books because man if I didn't want to stand on his front porch, once he got one built, and take in his view. Gregory Lamberson | 5 comments Hi, everyone, I'm a full time author and filmmaker, known to B movie fans for my cult films SLIME CITY and SLIME CITY MASSACRE, and to readers for my stand alone novel JOHNNY GRUESOME, my occult detective series The Jake Helman Files, werewolf series The Frenzy Cycle, zombie novella CARNAGE ROAD, and my instructional filmmaking book CHEAP SCARES: LOW BUDGET HORROR FILMMAKERS SHARE THEIR SECRETS. I'm a three-time Bram Stoker Award finalist and a two-time winner of the IPPY Gold Medal for Horror.

I had three books published this year: CARNAGE ROAD, THE FRENZY WAR, and TORTURED SPIRITS (which I'm offering as a Goodreads giveaway). In 2013, I'll have two: THE JULIAN YEAR, which is the first TREEbook (Timed Reading Experience E-book), an e-book which employs cutting edge time triggers and branching technology, and STORM DEMON, Book Five of The Jake Helman Files. A movie I produced, SNOW SHARK: ANCIENT SNOW BEAST will also be released on DVD. I'm due for a new website, but the old one is www.slimeguy.com.

Sharon Michael Robyn wrote: "Have you watched any of the A&E TV series? "

I was a fan of the books before the TV series debuted and I watched a couple of the first ones but didn't continue. I watch very little TV (some of the archaeology and farm programs, no series) and some of the things I like best about the books weren't well done in the TV series.

I like the way Walt is presented and the actor that plays him is good, but that's about it. I couldn't get past "Vic" being blonde and Henry is about as far as you can get from the book character, doesn't look or sound like a Crow or Cheyenne at all, and I grew up with both tribes.

I write almost every genre of romance because I love writing about so many different things and don't care to write in one subgenre forever. :) I love archaeology, archery, and I'm also a paranormal investigator. I've always been interested in the paranormal, so it is a topic I love to talk about whether it be related to books or not.

I'm happy to be here and connect with people, chat about books and have a great time. I have a Goodreads Giveaway going until Dec. 8, so hop on over and take advantage of the chance to win.

Julie Trell | 1 comments Hi Goodreads Authors and Bibliophiles!

I've been working with a wonderful nonprofit called Worldreader. (www.worldreader.org). Worldreader gives kids in the developing world access to digital books. Using eReaders loaded with thousands of local and international eBooks, they provide children the books they want and need, so they can improve their lives. (Think about it, instead of the cost and effort to BUILD libraries and SHIP books kids can easily have an updated eLibrary right in their own hands!)

Worldreader currently has programs in Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda and would love to expand.

Here's where you can help. Worldreader is currently one of 25 nonprofits selected to win $1M from Chase bank. As you are all people who know the power and excitement of writing and reading, I encourage you to vote for Worldreader, encourage your network to vote, and become a champion of the organization. Yes, they do often have independent authors to add to their library! (reach out to them at info@worldreader.org)

Please vote and cross post and get the word out as far and wide as you can: http://vote4books.com/WR_Goodreads

Many of the titles on these eReaders are local African authors who truly inspire the students to read books by and for their cultures. See this video of young Ghanian student Kate is inspired to become a writer now that she has more access to books. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4I1lb...)

Please encourage your friends and community to vote. http://vote4books.com/WR_Goodreads

Since Worldreader’s model is much more efficient than getting physical books into kids hands, a win of $1M would mean we could touch the lives of hundreds of thousands of children, hire more staff, and greatly increase capacity. And when you’re talking about numbers like these, you’re not talking about change in one community or one country….you’re talking about change worldwide.

(If you are a Chase customer, you can vote twice by logging in here: https://www.chase.com/online/Special-...)

(This is NOT a request for donations just awareness and need to build community)

Thank you!

Robert Carter (novelrob) | 11 comments Hallo everyone, I am Robert Carter and my books offer the chance to time travel to a different world!

I write tales set in the real world, but in the past. I stick to the real history, but insert characters and sub-plots which are consistent with what really happened. I do a huge amount of research, the equivalent of studying for an advanced degree. I become an expert in the period that I am working on – internet, books, old books, museums, travel and I converse with experts – all to ensure that it is convincing and correct.

I write about periods of massive upheaval and drama, because this is when people can be at their best – and their worst. I portray incredible courage, bravery and daring when emotions are at their highest. But people can also do some terrible things ...

Find out more at www.novelcarter.com. I look forward to conversing with you
