Hi all—I’m David Deane Haskell.

This is one of the first times I’ve actually introduced myself online in any real way, which feels a little overdue. Especially since what I’m trying to do now—through books, through writing, through connection—is pretty personal.

I’ve written five books so far. The first four were fiction—two suspense, two science fiction. Then I hit a wall. For five years, I couldn’t write anything that felt remotely good. I tried. Repeatedly. But it wasn’t until after a major spiritual awakening in June 2020—on a beach in Japan, of all places—that things started to shift. And even then, it took a while.

I didn’t just stop writing—I stopped functioning in a lot of ways. That block wasn’t just creative, it was emotional and spiritual, too. But the healing that came out of it has shaped everything I’m doing now.

Earlier this year, I finally broke the silence and published Wounded Angels, a nonfiction healing memoir rooted in inner child work and personal transformation. It’s the most honest, powerful thing I’ve ever written. And it opened the door for more. I’ve got new fiction coming soon—different from what I wrote before, deeper in some ways. Still strange. Still me.

These days, I’m on the road. I spent over two decades in Japan, but I left last New Year’s Eve and have been traveling through Southeast Asia ever since—Thailand, now Vietnam, and soon Bali. It’s not a vacation. It’s a rebuild. A reset. A return.

Before all this, I was a drummer—Disneyland in California and Japan, theme parks, jazz bands, the works. Long before that, I dropped out of college and wound up in rehab after nearly losing the thread altogether. There’s a whole lifetime buried in those in-between years—addiction, isolation, recovery, awakening. And now, this strange second act I never expected.

I’m here because I still believe in stories that matter. And I love meeting other readers and writers who feel the same.

Hello all,
I recently launched the finale of my dark urban fantasy/sci-fi Chaos Roads trilogy, "Out of Time", at Niagara Falls Comic Con, where I met many dedicated readers and fans. Some of you asked if I was on Goodreads, so I hope to run into you here!

My novels explore how an average person (or so she thinks) would handle an abrupt entry into a supernatural world she had no idea existed, and which her unique family heritage destined her to become an integral part of. Would we make the same choices as we embarked on the same adventure? Would we potentially sacrifice our own humanity to save the world and the people we care about?

The books contain many layers of history and mythology, and an entire cast of diverse characters, including LGBTQ+. The ferryman Charon was one of my favourite characters to write -- crusty, sarcastic, complex -- but many others participate, from several Egyptian and Greek gods and goddesses to others from Incan lore. My heroine uses special passageways informally called Roads to travel to other realms, trying to find her way through the darkness coming at her and recruiting as much help as she can. I hope you love her story!

While "Out of Time" wraps up the trilogy, there will be more Chaos Roads stories to come. The next one will be a horror and dark romance tale called "The Summer Door"; look for it in 2026!

Best advice I can give you is about advertising. If you advertise on kindle direct publishing or facebook or other servies, keep an eye on your spend. It is so easy to have the clicks take off on you and end up spending way more on ads than you'll ever sell.

I self-published my debut novel Falling Up In February on Amazon.

I had the original 'what-if' idea in the 90s, and had been wanting to write it ever since. Now that I'm retired, I decided I needed to do it — if I was ever going to.

I had no idea that writing would be so much fun. I was crying in the sad and the joyful parts, and laughing in the funny parts.

The story is a scientific remake of Peter Pan, but with no crocs. Gravity instead of pixie dust. Some characters might be considered pirates, though. Feel good fiction. Suitable for teens to seniors who like science fiction/fantasy. I hope you read it, and it makes you laugh and cry, too.

The first about 6 1/2 chapters are available in the Amazon preview.

I finished Book 1 moments ago here in Pueblo. Your writing is very engaging, descriptive, and highly entertaining.
It’s nice to read an author who tells a great story without taking 100 pages explaining why a circle is round. (Tom Clancy was great at this. Enjoyed his books once past the first 100-150 pages…)
As a fellow Sci-Fi fan it was nice to see the homage to Star Trek, 2001 and I’m guessing there will be more Sci-Fi easter eggs in the future books.
