message 21957: by Billy (new)

Billy Warren | 1 comments Hi Everyone,

I just published an historical novel set in a South Brooklyn Polish Catholic neighborhood.
I have always felt that 1969 was a pivotal year in America and one that is similar to 2024—bitter dysfunctional politics, media manipulations, campus takeovers, social rights riots, and war protests. From Woodstock to a moon landing to the Stonewall Inn riot to the New York Mets and Jets winning their championships, 1969 was a year of underdogs beating the odds and surprising everyone.

In 1969, I lived in a blue collar Polish Catholic South Brooklyn community. It made sense my debut novel, Fathers and Sons and Other Village Idiots, be based there. Initially, it was a story of generational divides within one family, but quickly my characters took me places I had not intended to go. The biting wisdom of Ivan Turgenev comforts and torments the mind of my melancholy hero, Kazimierz. The teachings of Dorothy Day, a 20th century Catholic radical, guided my protagonist’s best friend, Father Ed, to question authority. Both these underdogs of life begin searching for their elusive angels within their urban village.

The story is driven forward by Kaz’s eternal love for his wife, Marysia. I couldn’t have written this story fifty years ago. Cancer was in the story long before I had gotten a diagnosis of stage II cancer, but my treatments refined some of my attitudes. I needed to experience life, to better understand the importance of the events and how extraordinary 1969 was. I also needed to better understand my point of view.

I hope that my characters inspire the readers to do great things; my storylines inform about some little known histories that shaped our republic; and entertain readers with an occasional laugh and tear.

For more information or to read a sample, please visit my website at billywarren.com

Thanks for your attention.

Odessa Cortese | 6 comments Hi, everyone! My name is Odessa Cortese, and I’m Brazilian, but I live in the U.S. and write books in both English and Portuguese—I also speak Italian and Spanish! Words are my passion; the way we can combine them to form sentences that we carry with us feels like magic to me! I recently published a book on KDP about a movie actress who is killed on the red carpet. The story unfolds between her past, narrated by herself, and the present, where investigators try to learn more about her life and find out who killed her! It’s free, and if you’d like to give this book a chance, it would be an honor for me! Here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DJ7RGK8T

My name is Venla Bevan, and I just published my first ever book Adventures of a Flying Squirrel in Faraway Lands. It is a light, fun, exiting adventure story, written in 2 languages, finnish and english.

I am exited to have my first works out there, and inspired to write another book right away! The next one will be more serious, however...you don't write a light book in the dark Halloween season. >:) I fear, that I am going to have them coming in the future...

Welcome to know me a little better at http://venlabevan.com

Ray Mark Dane (raymarkdane) | 3 comments Hello Everyone,

I have been writing fiction seriously since 2015. I know it's a cliche today, but I really did used to take up a whole table in a supermarket cafe. It has taken me a long time to learn the craft, and then to consider my work good enough to publish, with my first novel published in July 2024. I have now published three novels and a novella, via KDP.

I have a new series soon to be published titled GRAY ELLIS, who is a Parish Constable in England, with the first novel set in 1701. This was a time of great upheaval and lawlessness. Gray Ellis is the only Constable receiving payment, due to his willingness to take on those strange and unGodly cases, people do not wish to speak of.

There are more details of my work, and upcoming novels, on my website.

I find it difficult to read fiction these days, at times I am concerned it will somehow taint or influence, my own writing. Although, I do try to read everyday still, a mix of fiction and non-fiction. I love to read factual historical accounts of high strangeness, which does influence my writing of course!

I definitely prefer tea! Coffee gives me an upset stomach. I only turned to coffee when we had our second child, but I've since gone back to either tea or V-8 energy drinks.

I love Oolong, but my go-to is Earl Grey. That being said, I have a wide variety and am currently enjoying a Spicy Chocolate Black Tea by Tea Punk Teas. What's your favorite?

Karl Loveridge | 3 comments My name is Karl Loveridge. I have recently published my debut novel House of Massan: The Edge of Time. It is a YA Fantasy that I have put my heart and soul into for years. It is available on Amazon as of October 7th.

Writing is my quiet place where I can go and escape from the chaos of the world. The characters in my story are like old friends that I can feel comfortable around.

Now that the first book is released, I face the uncertainty of what the public will think of my story. I've had readers go through my book. But they are usually friends or close associates. I have to remind myself that I didn't write this story just to sit on my hard drive for years.

Patti Townley-Covert (goodreadscompattitownley-covert) | 2 comments The Windblown Girl: A Memoir about Self, Sexuality, and Social Issues After being a writer/editor for over 30 years, it's a thrill to have finally written a book relevant to today. This intense love story led to a relationship with Jesus Christ that took me from chaos and confusion to peace and stability. Isn't that what we all long for? Prior to writing it, I wrote numerous national and international magazine articles. And, I coached NASA-level scientists as they wrote their own books. Then I did developmental editing on them. I've also helped other authors with their own stories. It's all a labor of love.

Patti Townley-Covert (goodreadscompattitownley-covert) | 2 comments The Windblown Girl: A Memoir about Self, Sexuality, and Social Issues Greetings from Patti Townley-Covert. After being a writer/editor for more than 30 years, I finally figured out how to make my memoir relevant to today. It involves an intense love story that led me to a relationship with Jesus. That took me from chaos and confusion to peace and stability. Isn't that what we all want? All my previous experience writing for national and international magazines came into play as did a ton of research into today's sexuality and justice issues. Many of my articles have dealt with the social issues our culture faces. To my delight, my articles on human trafficking and diversity in the church won Evangelical Press Association awards. I also spent almost a decade helping NASA-level scientists produce books showing solid factual evidence for a Creator. Writing/editing has provided a fascinating career filled with purpose and meaning. My joy is knowing I've written material that can make a difference in someone's life. Now I'm working on a historical fiction series with a co-author. C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien are among its characters.

Vince Savarin (httpsbooks2readcomapn9qlaw) | 7 comments Hello, my name is Vince. I am from the Caribbean. My main job in the field of medicine. I love reading. The public library was my second home, as a child growing up.
I always wrote on the side and finally decided to take a chance and start self-publishing last year. Random searching brought me to this group, and it looks really interesting.

My interests, are a bit wide; anything from action-adventure, science-fiction, fantasy, to horror. I love superheroes. I also personally enjoy drawing, so that bleeds into my reading interests. I love a good graphic novel.

I have 3 books out now. The first is called "Prodigal of Dominica" which is the start of my take on Dystopian science fiction. Its the first installment of a trilogy. Then is "Mr. Earl" a more straight-up horror novella about a local mythical creature from Dominica. The last one "A Night at the E.R. and Others" is a collection of short stories, poems and illustrations.

I have at least three more books planned: the two other installments to complete "Prodigal of Dominica" and a comicbook.
After that...I will let my dreams show me the next book.

I look forward joining, if you'll have me.

I’d like to read thrillers with realism. Fantasy and Sci-Fi is not real.

I not too keen on the world we are living in. Books are my escape. I yearn for the world we had between the two wars.
