Ch. (holykris) | 4 comments Hi, I'm Ch. E. Gallardo, graduate on physics and a writer at heart since my entire life I've been creating stories in my mind to overcome the excruciating boredom from the real world.

The anime/manga, videogames and cartoons kept me sane until something clicked inside my head and my book, Dream of the Guardians I-1: Rising, was born.

For most of my life I couldn't have books to read, yet I thrived to create a book as easy to read as possible. Hope I can contribute with my way of doing stuff.

I'm Peter. I've spent time in India, as an academic, working for a newspaper and as a teacher. I've always loved writing - and walking, and cycling and now playing with my children. My latest novel is "A Kinder City" just out - 'In a city that runs on greed where does that leave love?'
I hope you enjoy it!

You might want to check your link because I selected it and got a "Page Not Found". You'll soon find that everyone wants a review for his/her book. Personally, I have found that it is better to become interested and engaged in others' books. BTW, I have a veterinarian as a main character in "Tree of Life" by M.C. Harrison. I also publish under the name, Molly Harrison.

Thank you Molly! The Amazon link is broken but they tell me should be fixed soon. I changed it to the goodreads link. I’ll check out your book that has a vet as part of your story. We’re a strange breed so I’m always interested to see how others characterize us. 😊

I love to read a lot of historical romance and YA books but I'm very much open to other genres so long as they're still fiction 😇✨

After retiring from nursing, I began to write in earnest - articles, blogs, devotionals, and my first novel, "The Divine Meddler" which is due to launch this year.
And now, with Goodreads, I've discovered a community of hundreds of folks just like me - bookworms and writers. So glad to be here.

message 19719: by James (new)

James K. | 12 comments I’m the newly minted author of Dog Star Night, a middle-grade fantasy adventure story. While I’m a new author, I’m not new to writing. I spent over 30 years of my working life writing intelligence reports for the U.S. Department of Defense.

My very first editor told me that writing for a three-star general is much like writing for a sixth grader. She was in no way disparaging military generals, but instead lauding sixth graders. What a wonderful age! An astounding intellectual capacity to see the world with a simple clarity. Skip fluffy words and punditry. Get to the point. Be clear and precise. And most of all be honest. A sixth grader will sniff out BS as quickly as a three-star general. So, I proudly write for sixth graders.

If you have a fifth or sixth grader, please take a glance at the "Look Inside" on my Amazon page for Dog Star Night to see if it might be a good fit for them.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09VHZKMDW

I just want to pass on a few of my favorite passages from my story, so you can get even more of a feel for my writing style:

…But that morning, Max didn’t budge. His eyes didn’t open. His tail didn’t wag. Max lay lifeless. A wrenching pain gripped Benny’s stomach and he couldn’t breathe. Gasping, Benny finally caught a single breath and yelled, “Dad! Dad!”

…Just before getting so bright that Benny would have to turn away, the white light in the orb separated into colors. The colors took on shapes. First, pink and orange blended together to form a sunburned face, with rugged lines etched into it. Next, a swirl of red became hair and a beard. Finally, blues, yellows, and greens decorated the beard with beads. The orb became a crystal ball, the head of a red-haired, red-bearded man inside of it.

… Benny was engulfed by darkness. After a few seconds, white specks appeared overhead. At first, Benny thought they were stars, thousands of them, until he realized the specks were falling. One fell cold upon his face. They were snowflakes! Benny was no
longer viewing, but experiencing. He was in the globe, and what was in the globe was real.

Rebecca Cassidy | 1 comments Vincent wrote: "Please introduce yourself! Do you write books? Do you just enjoy reading them?

Hi, I'm Rebecca Cassidy and I've just published my Psychological suspense novel on Amazon.

I worked a registered nurse for many years, and I had always written short stories and poems, two which were published in the 80's. However I did not complete my first novel until I fell victim to a neurological condition that left me permanently disabled.

While rehabilitating, using my one good finger, I typed my first novel, and it took a long time, but when finished I wrote another one, and when things improved to the best they could get, working in education part time, and with all my fingers to type with, I returned to my novels and started again..

So if you fancy something atmospheric with lots of twists and turns, FRIENDS FOREVER, by Rebecca Cassidy, can be downloaded to kindle, or if like me you like the feel of the book, its also in paperback.

But I am not just an author. I am a reader too, and when writing my suspense novels, I read something else, and if you are a historical romance fan, I've just read, The Thane Legacy, by Valerie A Buck. It's a long, romping read, but it whisks you away to another time and place.
Glad to be part of the group.

Sue LeDoux | 6 comments Hi James,
I don't write fantasy or for middle grades, but the excerpts from your book are wonderful. Maybe I should re-think fantasy/middle grade genres!
I cannot imagine what went into those intelligence reports for generals (and I'll bet they're still classified), but I imagine you would be terrific writing novels around that too. You may enjoy books by Joel Rosenberg.

Everything about these books can be found at my website www.LesterFisher.com. That includes my KIRKUS review, all other reviews, and BookMad magazine feature. Since I am very new to the book world, I have very much appreciated the opportunity that Goodreads.com has provided to learn more about this highly competitive industry. I guess I have been trying too hard to get my books out their, because I have been reprimanded by the Goodreads Team for "engaging in unsolicited self-promotional activity on Goodreads". If I have been too aggressive, I apologize. But Like all self-published authors, we have limited access to the powerful advertising tools of the giant publishers. At least Goodreads provides a platform where we can present out material, links to our blogs, our videos, and find out how our readers are rating our publications. We know that the banner advertising across every page of Goodreads is paid for by wealthy publishers, but yet we "starving" writers have a chance to present our material too! That is very egalitarian and I compliment Goodreads for that!

I am a paranormal/fantasy fiction author. I write stories about strong, independent women who are magical, strong and funny as hell. I'm an educator, historian, and author with a new mystery book out, Killer Motives: A Hudson Valley Mystery, a "mystery with a dash of history" set in the Sleepy Hollow area. I'm based in Honolulu but I come to the NYC/Hudson Valley area often. I love good a page-turner. I've read a slew of contemporary novels over the past few years but now I'm going back to the classics with Ross Macdonald. What an amazing read! I highly recommend a periodic look back at the classics in each genre. Here' my new book if you care to take a look. Nice to meet everyone!

Linda (lkwatts) | 4 comments Hello everyone,
I am Linda Watts, author of the new personal growth/ memoir writing book, Better Endings: A Guidebook for Creative Re-Visioning (May 6, 2022 release on Amazon, B&N, plus ebook sites). Currently I am running a print book Giveaway, until May 8.
I am a cultural and linguistic anthropologist, recently retired as a professor but continuing to teach online for the Univ of Colorado. Much of my research has focused on life course studies. I consider humans to be Homo Narrativus: Storytellers. We live our lives as story and comprehend the events of the world in narrative terms. That aside, I have published three books on the notion of the Life Map or Life Path, and this new book, Better Endings, is a basic but potentially illuminating book about the concept of better endings, or our innate capacity of creative license when it comes to envisioning, reflecting upon, and yes, re-visioning our life story: past, current and coming to be. The publisher, Central Park South Publishing, has allowed me to include journaling prompts and journaling pages after each thematic chapter (e.g. with themes like Second Chances, Silver Linings, Literary Transformations...). So I highly do recommend to pick this one up and Do the Journaling! I have personally engaged with all of the themes and find the practice of creative re-visioning has been very eye-opening and even life-transforming.
Linda

message 19731: by Linda (new)

Linda (lkwatts) | 4 comments Thanks Nathan. My 2018 book includes an archetypal approach. Honestly though, that book, while I think very good substantively, is flawed because the publishers were targeting libraries so they required that I reduce 75 full page 'life mapping tools' to chapter ending journaling instructions. I do have a free download of a companion workbook at my blog site betterendingsnow.com. But my new book, Better Endings, is much simpler and does include (yay!) ample journaling space for readers.

Cassandra Cordini | 4 comments G'day! My name is Cassandra Cordini and I have just published my debut novel, "Happiest in Denial". What's it about? Good question. I've tried to tackle a lot of women's issues and look at why women stay in toxic relationships as long as they do. I'm hoping to empower women in a similar situation to that of the character in my book. I have been getting some good feedback/reviews. Now that it's out, I'm scratching my head a little as to what's next? I suppose getting more reviews and hoping those who read it, like it and recommend it to others. I'd love to know your thoughts. Many thanks, Cassandra.

Luis Trivino | 8 comments Hello Casandra, welcome.
Hi I wrote a book on my ptsd and self improvement from a man's perspective.as men we dismiss each other's actions by simply stating. "He's a man he will figure it out" when in reality we may not have the tools or skills needed for a positive mental well being. This leads into other issues in relationships, alcoholism and ptsd just intensifies things.
Plus my wife has bpd, ptsd anxiety and depression. She had a bod split triggered by medchanges and intense trauma therapy so a huge drama unfolded. So I wrote as a means to get through the situation and it turned into a book that people really like.

Hang in there it is tough getting the word out.

Luis

message 19734: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Hello Goodreads!

Karsyn here. I'm a lifelong (I'm in my 40s) voracious reader - until about 3 years ago, I'd read 200-300 books a year (one year nearly 500!). I read almost any genre, as long as the premise sounds good to me. I've been a reader for the sake of reading, I've done book reviews to get great books in the hands of more people. I love to read and at the very least, listen to at least an hour or so of an audiobook each night.

3 years ago, I started writing (under the pen name Koriana Brackson), so I still consider myself a newbie writer. I've self-published erotic romance and dabbled in other genres. Currently I'm doing re-writes on a psychological thriller.

I'm on Twitter, and I try connecting with people there, but as you can see by the length of this, I don't like being contained in a character count, and as such, I really don't connect with too many people there. I don't care for the asinine questions and frivolous posts.

I happened to come across this group and thought I'd join in, see if I could connect with more people this way. I'm looking to connect both as an author and as a reader.

I still read a ton, but more like 100 books a year now - since I don't count my re-writes (so many re-reads while editing) or my beta reading (I LOVE connecting with authors and helping through beta reading). Though I read a variety, I'm on a sci-fi kick lately (especially time travel). I love games in books (virtual reality, survival horror, puzzles). Pretty much the only books I don't read are ones meant to make me cry (yuk) or religious / clean books.

Other than reading and writing, I love playing video games, watching sports, hanging out with my Hubby and our dog.

I hope to make some friends here. I love chatty people, so if you like to chat about any of the above, feel free to get in touch.

Julie Pryke (julesmp) | 1 comments Hi, I was lucky enough to be an early reader and became an addict almost immediately. I moved on to telling stories, not just throughout my childhood but also as I became a community worker and realised how people's understanding of a situation could be made easier through stories, I then taught Youth & Community Work for many years, during which many real life stories were shared between students and myself.

I became interested in children's stories when my own three kids came along, reading to them, making up stories, encouraging them to do the same, playing story-related games.

Then, my 4 lovely grandkids arrived but, fortunately for me, so did Social Media, with opportunities to see and talk to each other online, as 2 of mine live in Germany and 2 in Canada, whilst I'm in Yorkshire. Such fun!
I wrote a book to help other parents/grandparents and now write children's picture books and have a podcast telltales2kids

Cheers! Julie Pryke

Kate Shanahan | 1 comments Hi all, I'm Kate Shanahan, a new author of a time slip historical fantasy set in tenth century Japan, published on Amazon on April 27. I retired a few years ago after an enjoyable and fulfilling career with a Japanese auto company, and started research for a novel about Sei Shonagon, a real-life lady-in-waiting at the 10th century Japanese imperial court, and author of "The Pillow Book", a work of literature that I like to call "the world's first blog."

And then I decided to add an American college student from 2019 whose spirit travels back to the year 999 and accidentally possesses another young woman's body. They struggle for control and then must work together to get help. So it went from historical fiction to historical fantasy, which was a lot of fun to write, and now I'm thinking about a sequel.

Steve Johnson (stevejohnsonbooks) I'm Steve Johnson, 65, a retired journalist from Mooreville, Mississippi, near Tupelo. I write thrillers, all based in the South. I'm working on my 14th book. This one is a historical romance that takes place in the 1920s. It's about how Rose met Leo. Rose was the second of three daughters in an Italian family living in New York. Her father promised her to an older Italian man against her wishes. She was a spinner in a cotton mill. She put a desperate marriage proposal inside of a box of bobbins bound for Alabama. Leo, a fixer whose job was to keep machinery running, found it and invited her to come on down. He called her his Yankee woman. They were married in April 1929 only a few months before the great stock market crash. They had a tough life, not finding riches, not finding complete happiness, but they did find each other. I've got 19 chapters and it's going fairly well. I hope to have it ready in a couple of months. Best wishes to all and happy reading.
